Ricky, who also appeared on BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing, said he now realised they had "grown apart" and had "put things off", in an interview with Hello! magazine.
Hannah, his Albert Square co-star, famously walked out on the marriage in January after a major fitness drive and weight-loss campaign, leaving Ricky devastated.
"It pains me to say it but at the time it was a real jolt, the worst thing that had ever happened to me," said Ricky, who has removed his wedding ring.
"But I've had time to think about it and, as sad as it is, maybe our relationship had become routine and we had grown apart. I think I'd just been putting things off, telling myself it would be all right, but then it got to the stage where it wasn't all right any more."
The actor was photographed by Hello! at the Wild Fitness resort in Kenya which he visited to get in shape for Sunday's Virgin London Marathon.
He now lives alone in Cambridgeshire in what was the marital home. "I quite like the solitude. I'm not moping around," he said.
Ricky said it was "too early" to think about a new love.
And he said: "I don't think I'd get married again, but never say never. I don't know whether the children thing has passed me by but people are saying that I shouldn't be silly as I don't know what's round the corner. So I suppose I should remain optimistic on that one."
