Against the Odds, NBC Renews Community for Season 5

Delta Cubes will never die! Or whatever. I can't explain it either, but despite dismal ratings and lots of backlash, NBC has gone and done the unexpected and renewed cult fave Community for a fifth season. The beloved comedy was barely hanging onto the bubble as the Upfronts approached, but its chances continued to improve throughout this week as NBC slowly axed nearly all of its other comedies

The decision comes the day after Community's Season 4 finale jumped up in ratings, all the way to a 1.3 rating. Yeah, that's not good by any means, but it's a positive sign that NBC was hoping for from one of its veteran comedies. Community joins Parks and Recreation on NBC's extremely short list of returning comedies.

Look, I know a lot of you are going to be super excited about this renewal, and I'm happy for you. But I'm having trouble with this, given how I've felt about the lackluster Season 4. Do I like it more than Guys With Kids? Hell yeah. But which show are we going to get in Season 5? Community Seasons 1-3 or Community Season 4? I'm so confused I'm going to jump into a hole and stay there for five years.

how the fuck is guys with kids and 1600 penn better than community...those shows are utter rubbish and hella cheesyness. I've only watched guys with kids couple of times and eh. Not feeling it. Community rules!!!! #SixSeasonsAndAMovie
Let me note that we need shows like community on TV for many reasons. Bring on the diversity of weirdos!!

the first time I had seen an episode of Community I couldn't stand more than a minute of it. Seriously I didn't see what the hype was. Finally after continuous coaxing from some friends I gave in and took a second look. Well. I can now say that I loved the first two seasons, insanely so. The third season looked like the writers had hit a wall as far as character development goes, and by the forth season it looked like the writers had finally noticed they hit that wall. but despite all that, I shall damn well continue watching Community! the first two seasons were more than enough reason to do so, not to mention the hopes of SIX SEASONS AND A MOVIE! Its gonna happen! Abed said so, and Abed knows his sitcoms.

I want to love Community soooo much - but I just can't anymore. I don't even want to see what they do to it in a fifth season.... season 4 just felt forced. No surprises and therefore no genuine laughs.

Honestly, whilst it may be a shadow of its former self, it's still a very enjoyable shadow and I will continue to watch it and enjoy it no matter what. Sure, most of the latest episode have been vaguely funny instead of laugh out loud funny but it's still better than 90% of the other comedy drivel out there. Keep it coming, although I will miss a bit of Chevy action.

I'm totally happy that Community's gotten another chance... but I'm really unhappy wiht the past season - the last episode was STRICTLY ALRIGHT! but the major part of the season has been MEH! I want the Community of seasons 1-3 back! Is that too much to ask? Season 4 just doesn't count!

Lots of backlash? You mean a single article on this site that was widely disagreed with?
I hope that the new season learns some lessons from season 4- Let Jeff and Annie get together, let Troy and Britta have another chance, actually remember the character development from Seasons 2 and 3 aka respect the characters a bit more, let the Dean be more normal and less creepy stalkery, and bring back more of the classic musical themes.

I'm actually happy with this news. Despite what anyone says, Community remains a strong and funny show with so much to offer!

Not so much with the news of Go On getting cancelled. That was just a stupid decision from NBC.

Tricky one.

I'm happy because it could be back, but I have an overwhelming sense of fear and dread that it's just going to go downhill.

I'd hate for community to die part way through a season. That would be the ultimate pooped-on-experience.

I am very happy to hear this. I have faith in the actors to keep this show entertaining. I'm eager to see what they can do past graduating though... Are they all going to move into some complex together or all work with Jeff at some law firm? Hmm

I bet Jeff comes back to Greendale as a teacher. Didn't he say his degree was in Education?

omg he could be their astronomy teacher...or he would create the ultimate blow off class. That or they make all of last season a dream, which I don't think people would mind too much

Ooooh good guess. I do remember him saying something like that. But why would the rest of them continue to get an educaton at a community college... 4 years was already a stretch. I guess they could all have some kind of jobs there. Britta can be the school therapist, haha.

I don't know, they did spend all of season 4 saying the group wasn't bound by college. They are family now. Episodes can very well go on at Abed's or really anywhere.

Community should consider thanking the cast and crew of The Office for ending this season. Had they not chosen to end this season (renewal would have been easy), I'm sure NBC would have cancelled this. Hell, I'm surprised Go On was even cancelled instead of this.

I disagree. Some of my favorite episodes were in Season 3. Regional Holiday Music, Digital Estate Planning, Basic Lupine Urology, Pillows and Blankets, and Remedial Chaos Theory were all fantastic.

When I first read this I was so happy but to tired to comment (it was 1am when I first read it). Although this season starterd off rocky it did pick up so the is a clear sign to me that the next season should (hopefully) be alot better. And really if you look back on S4 it wasnt that bad, I think alot of people were cynical towards S4 b/c of all the BS that happened behind the scenes. I for one rewatched some of the epiosdes which I origionally thought were total crap and found that they werent actually that bad (well except for S4E1). So I have high hopes for season 5. And I woudl love to see the six seasons and a movie come true, that would be fun.
I do wonder, however, if the ratings for this show would be higher in a different time slot b/c i sadly dont think it will ever take ppl away from the BBT. But im glad to see that NBC has noticed that that is one of the factors in why the numbers have never been that good. I just hope that they treat the show better next year and actually put it on in sept/oct rather than Jan.
For the show its self I want to see more new stories and less rehashings of previous episodes, along with less inspector spacetime and actually making story lines and sticking to them or at least have a pay off (troy/britta, changnesia, City college's giant spider, valedictorian subplot). All in all Im happy its back.

When I first read this I screamed and then cried tears of excitement and happiness and relief for about an hour. As much as I had been trying to prepare myself for if it got cancelled, I was in a panic over the thought of not having this show in my life anymore.

I am happy. I don't watch it to find the flaws, I watch it to have a good time and even the "not so good" episodes are still better than most of the other comedies.

That's what I keep saying!! People seem to forget that a subpar episode of Community is still better than most other television's best episodes. I feel like the reviewers for tv.com compare it to itself too much, when they need to enjoy these amazing characters!

This is wonderful! This is soooo funny. The little show that couldn't, the underdog, had a huge uphill battle from the get go, and no one thought it EVER would last to see a 3rd season. Wasn't that the joke about season six? that it would never last that long. Well looks like around this time next year we'll be debating whether we'll get that season six we all joked about.

:D

I'm excited!
Even when it isn't firing on all cylinders I still like Community more than Parks and Rec (and I do love Parks and Rec), and way more than any other comedy NBC tried this year. And while there have been definite misses, the hits this year made it all worthwhile for me. If you look at seasons 1-3, they had some stinker episodes too. It's just the good ones we'll remember.

Well, isn't this a derpy article. NBC gave community the worst time slot of its Thursday night, the show still held its own. NBC didn't bring back Harmon, and the show suffered because of it. It was still entertaining, but nowhere near what it used to be. You can blame the morons who made the decision to cut out Harmon. I'm still glad it got renewed, I'll still watch it...but I hope they can recapture the magic

I'm delighted it's not cancelled. All the people who still enjoy Community can go ahead and keep enjoying it. As for the rest of you, no one forces you to watch it. There are plenty of other channels or just turn the tv off it upsets you so much that Dan 'God' Harmon isn't around anymore.

I have to say, Community getting renewed is the biggest surprise this month.
I had honestly given up a long time ago that we would get a season 5.
And while season 4 has been the worst season, its still more enjoyable than many of the other comedies.
If i only could go back in time to september and make a bet that Go on would be cancelled and Community would be renewed, i would have been a millionaire.

If we have the Originals and TVD and TWD and OUAT and Grimm... If CBS can have 5 CSIs, 10 NCISs and an Elementary... If we have Modern Family, 2 Broke Girls, and TBBT... then I daresay we can have another season of Community.

Whether S4 was as good as S3 or not. #sixseasonsandafuckingmovie

Remember when you could sit down on a Thursday night and get Cosby, Family Ties, Cheers and Night Court? NBC OWNED Thursday. (This speck of nothing actually sits in Cosby's spot.) Apparently no one at NBC does either. No comedy this network has, including critical darling 'Parks and Rec' would have made it to air when NBC was in its prime. Just keep placatng the ever dwindling number of people still watching this network NBC; that'll fix everything!

NBC would've been the opposites of Batman had they'd canceled the show after Season 4. I'd like them to have a FINAL SEASON blowout, so hopefully Season 5 will stay steady in the ratings again? lol lets not jump to far ahead. But I'm so happy about this I could die.

I'm really happy, now I can go back and enjoy the season finale just as a season finale and not hate it as a de facto series finale...because that's how I was looking at it while it aired...but now that it's just another episode I can sit back and enjoy it.

I'M SO HAPPY, OMG. Community is the best show on TV and season 4 was great, it just happens that it was different. Did we get so much sentiment before? No. Was it awesome? Yes. Maybe season 5 will be different again, and that's OK. The characters are so strong and the actors are so good that the show works by its own at this point. Look at Intro To Felt Surrogacy. There was no Dan Harmon around for that. And it was awesome. EVERYTHING IS AWESOME. I'm happy today.

I hate to say this about my once-favorite modern comedy series, but they should have cancelled it, and kept Go On instead. That show was MUCH better than this Britta'd version of Community. Hell, they should have cancelled it after season. Then, I would have felt devastated, but I'd take that over the utter disgust over NBC's treatment of the series, and the sadness over how far it has fallen. As I said on the season finale review article, I don't plan to go any further with this show. I gave it a "full" season to prove itself, and it did have some decent moments, but overall it failed horribly.

SO AWESOME!!!! The season finale was fantastic. People who didn't like it just aren't nerdy enough, the fact is that Community is a nerdier show that BBT, and a better one (though I like BBT too).

All those negative nancies sadden me.
Season 4 got better with every episode, they got feedback and I am sure that season 5 will improve even further, I rather watch the "dumbed down" Community over any other tv show!

NBC should of cancelled Community and let it die.
I was one a hardcore Human Being but after the train wreck trauma that was Season 4 I'd be happy saying goodbye. NBC should of given Go On a Season 2 and tried to build it's viewers back up with a shorter season maybe? Paired with the Michael J Fox show it could of got back up to those steady viewers the first half seemed to achieve. Go On deserved this renewal, not Community.

Not to go into community fan freak mode, but tonnes of better comedies got cancelled. Shows with more lols per minute than both GO and Comm.

Go On wasn't great. In no possible way, unless you're a serious fan of Perry. If you thought it was great, you need to watch more comedies. Start with everything on FX and if you don't mind subtitles check out some Japanese stuff.Go On was more dramedy than comedy.

Community, season 4 included, has a flavour of absurdist comedy that you cant find anywhere else in American live action tv.

Community at it's worst is still better than most comedies so this is definitely CoolCoolCool. Seems like a move NBC had to make after dropping everything else but Parks and Rec, the only question now is when they schedule Community...

I want to say Cool, Cool Cool Cool but...

...sadly this show is nowhere as good as in the first 3 seasons, the only way I see this working is if they bring back the creative people they fired. This probably won't happen so I have 0 expectations and limited intrest in season 5 :(

Can't say I'm particularly thrilled, but if they stick to one simple rule, it could still be good: Have new ideas!
No more darkest timeline, Inspector Spacetime, Germans, documentaries, paintball, etc. Come up with new things. The show was always at its best when it did unexpected things, and at its worse when it re-did things.

Oh, one exception: please bring back Professor Duncan.

This season was a bit weird. Don't think it was as bad as some poeple say but it was weird. All the waiting and the airing of episodes at a weird order vut I still think that community is better than a lot of comedies currently airing so I'm happy. Hope they make a proper season 5.

I'm not a fan, but I've had to hear friends and coworkers worship and romanticize this show for years...but they're slowly peeling away as the years go on. Many things are remembered better if they lived fast and died young, so I personally hope they ride this show until the wheels fall off.
