AHS: Freak Show "Blood Bath" Review: Squashed and Beheaded (PHOTO RECAP)

American Horror Story S04E08: "Blood Bath"

According to scientists, absence makes the heart grow fonder. But ignore the jargon for a second; what that phrase means in layman's terms is that sometimes we grow too used to things and that prevents us from fully appreciating them. Sometimes you need a week off, and sometimes that week should be spent in uncomfortably close quarters with your extended family, watching majority-voted television programs or 24-hour cable news networks. And those are ideal circumstances to really and truly start missing American Horror Story: Freak Show. While it's unfair to judge a season before it's over—as we learned this week, a season's fireworks are often back-loaded—I think a lot of us were getting the sense that perhaps Freak Show was the fourth-best season of this franchise so far. But we should have expected that, despite some slow middle-season episodes, it would still have a few tricks up its sleeve. To wit: "Blood Bath" straight-up murdered two huge characters. We're talking characters important to the story, but also ones played by actresses who've grown essential to the AHS franchise as a whole. Add to that some new events that finally create an everyone-for-themselves battle dynamic, some laugh-out-loud moments, an Angela Bassett plotline that's actually befitting her talents, and, of course, #butts, and "Blood Bath" did a lot to knock this season back on course.

This episode was very good and we should talk about it!

We started off in a psychiatrist's office, where Mrs. Mott was smoking and lamenting that her son was a major psycho. She even provided examples!

My favorite part was when the doc asked if Dandy had done anything recently to suggest he's still psycho at this present time, and of course she flashed back to the time he murdered Patti LaBelle, but then instead of citing that example she just answered that she had "a mother's intuition" about it. I laughed so hard. Frances Conroy is maximum great. Anyway, we never got to see the psychiatrist's face, which is either a set-up for a big reveal later, or simply a stylistic decision because his identity isn't important. I kinda hope it's the latter. Unless he's played by, like, Chris Zylka or whatever. Then I'd be okay with it.

Meanwhile everyone noticed that Ma Petite was missing! So Jimmy took a bloodhound into the swamps and came across the tattered remains of one of Ma Petite's dresses.

Elsa didn't take it well.

But the Bearded Lady had HAD IT with dead and/or disappearing friends, and after having overheard Elsa plotting to murder the twins, she became convinced that Elsa was also behind Ma Petite's disappearance. Next thing we knew she was in Elsa's tent accusing her of murder for about 12 straight minutes!

And even though this was the one murder that Elsa WASN'T involved with, Ethel arrived packing heat and even shot Elsa in her wooden leg!

To her credit, Ethel had no idea that Elsa was legless, so then Elsa showed her some flashbacks of the time she was rescued from the snuff film and a kindly Italian surgeon named Axeman (or whatever) helped her out.

But Elsa's sob story wasn't enough to assuage Ethel's suspicions, and she was ready to murder-suicide them both. She'd even written a note!

Of course, Elsa wasn't about to go quietly.

Awww rest in peace, Bearded Lady. I realize this series of funny screengrab make-'em-ups portrays the scene in a comic light, but really it came down to the sad, emotional, devastating performance by Kathy Bates. Ethel was hurting and felt super betrayed by Elsa, someone she'd considered her only family, and people had gotten hurt as a result. So yes, it was maybe the longest scene in AHS history, but it was also the perfect swan song for this character and another celebration of how remarkable these actresses are. Credit where credit's due: Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk write material for women unlike anybody else. It's no wonder so many legends want to be on AHS. Anyway, bye Ethel!

Love Kathy Bates, but am glad to be rid of that accent.

Very sad, but not surprised to lose Frannie's character...

I wasn't as excited about this episode as the reviewer, but the step-back from Strong Man's story, the introduction of Axeman's (yay!) and ... How did ye ol' Bearded Codependent/Woman-Servant not know about the wooden legs? She was that secretive about em?

First I thought she was shot in the gut and somehow invincible/undead. lol
Shows how well I was paying attention.

I really do hope this is an upswing.

Also, why do they gotta leave Lizard Girl's hair like that? Gah it drives me nuts.

2 - And of course Dandy is dangerous. The "perfectly normal looking" psychopaths are the scariest, IMO.

3 - Tarred and feathered? Uh no, you?

4 - The Roosevelts were liberals and the Motts, not...I would assume... "Old money snobbery" at its best.

No...not Kathy Bates...she is killed and her head chupped off again!!!
Dandy is so cool, the way he some looks in his eyes....but Twisty was more cool and miss the clown...
I think they have to a moment, that things are not going the way it should and Elsa couldn't care less..she cries and does, but the only thing she wants is to be famous...
I wil get very upset if we don't see twins anymore...Miss my girls...:(:(:(

What I don't get is this - the promotion of the show was relying heavily on saying that freaks are just people and that they shouldn't be judged, but then the show decides to make them all ruthless murderers.

The only character left to root for is Maggie. To me she is the only likable character at this point.
Desiree is cool and all, but still...

It's just like with the democrats... (chuckles)

It's a fine line b/n being a victim and empowering revenge...

Or something like that. Always play by the rules and be nice and share and get f'd over by those who would take advantage or do some things that aren't so "nice" and get labeled just as bad as the enemy...

Dandy is the greatest thing about this season. It's such a great character. Every time he opens his mouth I'm rolling with laughter, but everything he does is terrifying bc he's a legit psycho.

Also all of the Penny and her dad stuff is really heart-wrenching. It's a smaller subplot but its a very effective one.

It may be the only way for Ms. Basset to say "let's go" but I'm pretty sure that anyone else trying to pull it off would just look stupid.

Daddy got off too easy. Maybe he wasn't worth going to jail for, but they should at least have castrated him.

The Roosevelts? "New Deal" obviously. Banking regulation and stuff, some of which wasn't repealed until Reagan.

i really liked this episode, i thought it was by far the best this season so far. I kinda like the idea that i saw in one of the comments it said that this season had a view of society as to who are the real freaks. I keep trying to find the main storyline in the season but i'm beginning to think there is no main storyline. Sure it may not be my favorite season of the show but it has finally gotten almost as interesting as the other season. If the next five episodes keep us on the edge of our seats a this one did for me, i'm sure well all be ok if not satisfied with the season. but pause! I feel very strongly that taissa could've held Emma's role waaaaaaaay better than Emma is, i still don't see her character's significance to be honest and i feel like i might have felt different had taissa been playing the role.
... Whom will you miss more, Kathy Bates or Frances Conroy?

I'm going to miss Frances more, i feel like her character had more significance, i also feel that her death is going to do more for the plot than Kathy's. Love them both tho
... Is Dandy dangerous?

Yes very, i don't get how some people don't see or get that, within the first few episodes no he wasn't not at all but, by 'Pink Cupcakes' i knew he was dangerous! If this episode didn't convince you of that i don't even know what to tell you, he killed his mom for godsake that means he won't shy away from killing anyone else!

OK, humor me...I haven't missed an ep, but who else's death was Maggie involved in, besides Ma Petite (and she didn't even go through with that; it was the Strong Man)? Can't recall. I bet I'll feel silly if someone reminds me.

She was inadvertently involved in Ma Petite's death because she acted as a 'witness' when Stanley was attempting to blackmail the Strong Man into murdering a freak....and, thus he was able to successfully blackmail him into doing so, resulting in Ma Petite's death. Had she not been there, there's a good chance he would have murdered Stanley right then and there, or found some way to quiet him.

Also, she we know how she described Ethel's death to be false, so she becomes an accomplice in this murder also, by providing false testimony to cover for Elsa/Stanley.

I'm not a huge fan of her character, especially in the tar and feather scene.

The rise and fall of matriarchal tyranny: A tale of two kingdoms. That’s what this episode was all about. It span around two dominant, complex matriarchal figures, meine liebe Elsa and Gloria Mott.
The rise: Meine liebe Elsa and her “Freaks”
Elsa Mars as another Bernarda Alba entraps her “freak children” into a world of delusional safety and pretence love, only to impose on them her own values, aspirations and desires. In this Elsa-serving universe of good-pretentions whoever dares to stray from its cosmological principles is destined to depart. The violation of those principles (although it was done for the wrong reasons) led to an extremely dramatic moment between Elsa and Ethel. Ethel, being deprived basic emotional nurturance, eroded and corroded by Elsa’s self-centered tyrannical dominancy takes a step towards freeing herself and her “siblings” from Elsa’s asphyxiating presence. Nevertheless, Elsa is the creator of this universe and she’ll allow nothing to upset its equilibrium – and without hesitation eliminates the threat.
The fall: Gloria Mott and Dandy Mott.
Gloria Mott is another kind of Bernarda Alba – as she has a good reason to protect Dandy from the world and vice verso; but nothing is enough. Dandy’s emotional abuse and apparently genetic predisposition, led him to yet another metamorphosis. No matriarchal law applies - any longer - to his universe of conflicting perception; a universe where truth and illusion collide. He needs to break free from his mother’s tyranny and at the same he acknowledges the need of her protective custody. His deluded mind provides the answer. He wears the skin of Elizabeth Báthory and kills Gloria exchanging her unconditional protection for the ephemeral pleasure of bathing in her blood, hoping that now he’ll be carrying her protective-over-him powers. Dandy doesn’t hate neither is afraid of his mother’s actions. He simply wanted to become her! Dandy’s scenes with Gloria were simply phenomenal.
"I always thought of him as a foreigner," Gloria tells her therapist; a therapist that was masterfully acted by the hands of an actor. I just loved the device!
Counting on Dandy being Dandy, I don’t think that Gloria is out of the show. I’m sure that he’ll have lots of delusional outbreaks about Gloria.
Another great scene was Penny’s retribution against her father. She and her new “sisters” kidnapped him, to tar and feather him, then cut his dick off and finally kill him! Desiree was quite impressionable!
It was an inspired episode. It was an episode that explored the psychology of personalities functioning in an ambience of matriarchal tyranny, evil and death. It was an episode that dealt with its heroes by going beyond gender or appearance, physiological repression and abuse, emotional or physical handicaps. The characters in the episode were merely culturological metaphors of the burden of family, social restrictions and moral laws.

Last night I was telling a friend of mine about this season and the issue that I have with it. I still like AHS, I still find myself tuning in to watch this season but when I tried to sum up what it was about I couldn't give that somewhat simplified answer that you usually could with the other seasons. I couldn't give an answer to that thing that stretches over the length of the season that keeps you hooked.

There's no apparent goal or question you want to see answered it's just on going so really I don't know what to anticipate because there's really nothing to anticipate.

So instead of that we're being treated to the "Who are the real freaks? What makes a freak the physical or mental?" question, this seasons looks to be more of a view of society and the horrors of what they'll do.

That said I did enjoy this episode very much with the exception of Maggie's speeches to the women then to Jimmy, it just didn't sit right given her character, I think it could have been said differently but it just didn't feel right.

Angela Bassett's performance was awesome it gave me the strongest urge to go out and have "Put the pot on simmer, low flame." tattooed over my left bosom.

You make a really good point. "Who is Rubberman?" "Who is Bloodyface?" "Who is the next supreme?" All the other seasons had clear cut questions and this one just...doesn't. Even Twisty's identity wasn't a mystery. Mostly what keeps me going each week is who will die and what anachronistic cover will be next. That's enough for me but I can see how it wouldn't be enough for others.

Yes, the best that I could sum up was that this is more of an "If and when" season rather than a "Who and what". It strays from the usual formula that they've followed up until now but I do not fault the writers for it, you have to be brave and try new things.

But there is one thing I did notice that your comment sparked, Jimmy keeps repeating that the show and shows like theirs in general are dead and/or dying, and they are being killed to be viewed as oddities essentially doing the same thing only literally dead.

I think this was one of the decent episodes in this slightly disappointing season. I did not see the death of Gloria coming, it was a great shock. Some of the acting on this show is kind of questionable, however. Emma Roberts and Gabourey Sidibe just don't seem that good? When you have them on shows with actors like Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, and Angela Basset it really shows.

... Whom will you miss more, Kathy Bates or Frances Conroy?
Frances Conroy. I loved watching Gloria so much, and I kind of hated Ethel's accent.
... Is Dandy dangerous?
Really loving these questions Price...
... Have you ever been tarred, feathered, or both?
That scene really messed me up.
... What did the Roosevelts do to earn the Motts' disdain?
Lmao, there should be a spin off.

Conroy is not gone. Don't worry. The ritualistic murder of hers, plus Dandy's psychological condition are definite signs of her return in the show. Dandy - I believe - will be "seeing" her and "talking" to her, till season's finale.
His bloodbath, was more than an attempt to gain the "power of protection" Gloria had over him. It was an attempt to keep her alive in him (or on him)!

It was reported a couple months that she will be on this season reprising her role. I mean hello, Pepper is the exact same character who has had a small role in this season and was featured more prominently in Asylum. It's conceivable that Sister Mary Eunice could have been a young novice in the early 50s; age-wise, she probably would have been a teen out of high school at the time.

I think we're heading now to good ole AHS style. Kathy and Frances getting killed in one and the same episode... Pretty bold IMO! I love Desiree's sassy femme squad, but I'm also looking forward to see them die- not just the women, I mean everyone! It's still American Horror Story and hopefully we get to see many creative death scenarios. So I'm looking forward to get my heart broken episode per episode! Killing Gloria and Ma Petite was definitely a good start to crush my heart! :)

Also, I can't handle Maggie being the good one. I prefer Emma Roberts being a real bitch...

Indeed, this season consists the definition of a Horror Story, as - at least from my point of view - it evokes the necessary atmosphere and sense of emotional dread. It's a discourse on the human psyche that constantly underlines how little we know and understand.

This season was moving slow, but this episode stepped it up big time imo. So sad to see Francis Conroy gone :( she was one of my favorites, but I'm happy that people are starting to die and plots are starting to thicken and move. Ma Petite was the start, and now we have Kathy Bates and Francis Conroy (two regulars, one of which I liked the character (conroy) and I did not see that coming. I'm excited to see where this season goes, because I feel like after this season no one is safe, and thats a great feeling.

I thought last season was bad, this one is worse! It feels like "The Walking Dead" Season 2 at the barn.... MOVE THE STORY ALONG PEOPLE!

This is what we've been waiting for. This is American Horror Story people! Turn up episode the best this season thus far. Elsa's reaction to Ethel's death was f*cking gold! Dandy's expressions after killing his mother- gold! Desiree and the freak girls- gold! And I love the midget, even thou he hasn't said one word all season, he's friggin adorable. My one disappointment is Maggie, she is just not the character I thought she would be. She turned out to be way too bland when in the beginning I saw potential.

I may have missed something, but I really thought Elsa loved Ma Petite. Was she really jealous of her fame/did she know ahead of time that she was going to be killed? I know she wants to be famous more than anything and just sometimes I believe she does care for the others, but this is throwing me again.

Elsa, being a narcissist, is incapable of true, unconditional love and affection. Everybody around her exists only to serve her needs and feed her hunger for attention and appraisal.

For as long as the people surrounding her are capable of satisfying her needs, Elsa can convincingly fake emotions of love and care. The only reason Elsa mourns Ma Petite's lose is because Ma Petite was still of use to her.

No, she wasnt aware of what was going to happen to Ma Petite. She does love them all, to an extent.. but as she said Ma Petite was her favorite, i think she looked at Ma as her child, they sometimes shared the bed for crying out loud. lol

Long Story short, she was genuinely shocked when she found out about Ma Petites death, and actually i noticed that her shock was alot more genuine than the second time when Kathy Bates died & she was obviously faking it.

Agreed. It was established that she was jealous of Ma Petite at first (which is probably why Ma Petite was playing back up for Elsa now lol) but Elsa came to genuinely care for her, and she had no hand in or prior knowledge of her death. Elsa was truly hurt by Ma Petite's death, it certainly seemed like it when Ethel accused her of being involved. Elsa certainly spins a lot of bullshit, but she appeared to be absolutely enraged and butt-hurt that Ethel would even suggest that she would harm Ma.

So, with this episode we learn that:

1- Yes, Ryan Murphy just gave to two of the best actresses on the show, useless characters.
2- Frances Conroy was there only to support a character who doesn't even works. Ryan, stop trying to make Dandy happen, it's not gonna happen...the desperate effort to make him look like a threatening villain is starting to get laughable
3- We will have to swallow Elsa being Fiona 2.0 all over again. And worst: this will be AGAIN the main plot.

I should've learned with Nip/Tuck that any Ryan Murphy show keep good for more than two seasons anyway.

Why are you still watching it, then? Seriously, I'm sick of these people nitpicking Freak Show for no good reason. You guys keep complaining about how boring this season is or about how it should kill off more characters, now they gave us an exciting and thrilling episode with unexpected deaths and you complain about that too?! Fuck off! Wait for the next season, go rewatch the seasons you like or, better, stop watching the show for good.

I agree - I'm getting a little tired of all the "haters" too. Even at it's worse, American Horror Story is still a great show. If you don't like it, just don't watch it. It's really very simple.

Oh, It was so obvious that the "oh, why are you still watching then?" guy would come out with that "argument".

"Fuck off" lol, bitch is really mad.

Why I was watching this season? Oh, let's say...bcs I had some hope to see it finally getting good? For insistence? But then this dumb episode just happened. And I'm just saying my thoughts abt this. If you see as "exciting and thrilling" episode, one that barelly had any true plot development, and just killed two useless characters given to shamefully underused talented actresses, heey, good for you! But, yeah, I won't keep watching something that doesn't please me.

Does it hurt you so bad to read contrary opinions? Here's a tip: Get out of the internet, dig a hole on the ground, stick your head inside it and keep that way forever. Or just deal with it. Bye ;)

I get some of your points VladRain but you come across really condescending & thats gunna get people fired up.. Israeled's response was passionate because they're into the show, admittedly I am as well. This season has def had some slow moments, but the style and production is just great at times. I thought this episode was excellent.

I wasn't one of those who complained about the slow rythm...I was liking it because Freak Show was being at least being coherent (and still is), thing that last season wasn't even close to be.

But I was disappointed, not exactly because God (a.k.a Frances Conroy) was killed, but because I just realised she was there only to support Dandy's plot...wich don't really convince me at all. As well as Elsa's one.

So, if those are going to be the two main foccus of FS from now, I'm kinda like..."so, why I should keep watching?"

Other then Coven this season has been the best. Thisbseason has had some of the best stories and characters. I honestly feel like the people that dont like or enjoy this season dont understand it. This season has been creepy and vistually stunning. I thought i would give up after Coven but this season blew Coven away.

Freak Show is tecnically amazing. All of AHS seasons are. All of them manage to be visually iconic.

But the story this time didn't get me. I don't know, I'm not interested on see Elsas doing anything to get what she wants, or Dandy playing of being an psycho.

I think I'm done with AHS :( Looking Foward to next season of Penny Dreadful tho... :)

Fully Agree, theres just no pleasing some people.

My only problem with this season is the same ive had with some of the others, we're getting alot of subplots & they are really underusing some great actresses, like last year.

But im still loving every single minute of it, tonights was one of the best yet, incredible acting on Frances Conroys part.

Its kind of funny, I know this episode was called blood bath and it was, but I swear it seemed like more people died than Ethel and Gloria.

The only thing I have to say is..."what the hell????" With the rate of the body count in each of these episodes, I figure the last show will just be a black screen devoid of any characters, because by then, everyone will be dead. Not much fun anymore....

It's a HORROR show...there's gunna be a body count, or there are no stakes.. Coven had a pretty decent survival rate for its characters but 2 & especially 1 saw people killed in almost every episode. I know it sucks to have characters you like killed off, I'm still pissed they actually went there with Ma Petite.. Honestly I just think AHS has come along with a great cast of characters, and its hard when they gotta go.
