Amazon Renews Hand of God, Red Oaks, and Picks Up Five Series

Today, Amazon was like, "Yo suckas, we be all up in this online streaming network stuff, too, yo!" Because it went crazy with pickups and renewals of original programs, countering one of the Netflix rival's greatest weak spots: a rather paltry amount of shows, especially compared to the market leader.

Following today's earlier news that The Man in the High Castle was renewed for a second season, Amazon ordered second seasons of David Gordon Green's '80s-set comedy Red Oaks and the Ron Perlman-starring Hand of God, a show that our own Cory Barker can't stop trashing on the TV.com podcast.

The company also welcomed five new series from this year's round of pilot testing to its growing list of programs. Coming soon to the online network will be:

Good Girls Revolt: This hour-long drama, set in 1969, is about a group of young female researchers who seek workplace equality. Based on the discrimination cases outlined in Lynn Povich's book of the same name, the show stars Anna CampHunter ParrishJoy BryantJim Belushi, and Grace Gummer.

Highston: A half-hour comedy starring newcomer Lewis Pullman as Highston Liggetts, a 19-year-old who has an imaginary circle of celebrity friends. Mary Lynn Rajskub and Chris Parnell co-star as Highston's concerned parents, and Shaquille O'Neal and Flea guest-star in the pilot.

One Mississippi: A dark comedy that follows lesbian comedian Tig Notaro as she returns to her childhood hometown in Mississippi to handle the fallout after the unexpected death of her mother while dealing with her own health issues. Casey Wilson guest-stars as Notaro's girlfriend, and Diablo Cody and Louis C.K. are executive producers.

Patriot: Australian newcomer Michael Dorman stars in this timely political thriller as intelligence officer John Tavner, who is tasked with blocking Iran from building a nuclear weapon while going undercover as a mid-level employee at a piping firm in the Midwest. Terry O'Quinn plays John's father, and Kurtwood Smith plays his boss.

Z: Christina Ricci stars in this bio-series about Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, which begins before she met her eventual husband, F. Scott Fitzgerald (Gavin Stenhouse), and follows their subsequent love affair and marriage. Set in the 1920s, the show chronicles the debauchery of the Jazz Age.

That means only Edge, a violent Western starring Ryan Kwanten and Yvonne Strahovski, wasn't given a series pickup from this year's pilots. However, Deadline notes that it's not entirely out of contention yet.

Amazon also picked up the kids' series Danger & EggsIf You Give a Mouse a Cookie, and Niko and the Sword of LightTumble Leaf was also renewed for a third season.

In addition to these series, Amazon also has BoschTransparentMozart in the Jungle, and the upcoming drama Trial from David E. Kelley.

What do you think? Should Netflix be worried?

Hand of God started well but ultimately should of had a DNR order placed on it by its end.

Shame - I really liked Edge. Mostly because of Max Martini. But it was a fun show! Hopefully they'll pick it up later...?

I am very confused. They picked up If you give a mouse a cookie but not Everstar (the best of the kids shows) or the fun-filled Eddie of the Realms Eternal? Danger and Eggs I understand, as it would be a perfect move toward more Adult Swim like animation. One Mississippi was awful, of everyone I know who watched it, only I could finish. Highston could be good depending on the celebrity guests, but that will take some good budget and writing, so i'm apprehensive. The Patriot will be nice a brainless, though releasing the entire season at once will be overwhelming. Z an Good Girls both deserved a season. I'm ok with the renewals aren't we still waiting to see if Alpha House will be renewed though?

The Man in the High Castle is the only one I like.

Great pickups especially Highston, very funny pilot with lots of potential a bit reminiscent of My Name is Earl.
Hand of God, The Man in the High Castle. Z and Good Girls Revolt are worth a look too. Only one I don't get is Red Oaks, just seemed gratuitous and un-funny.

Good thing I don't listen to the podcasts because I've got Hand of God waiting for me in queue because Ron Pearlman can do no wrong. Well, maybe he can do a little wrong...okay, a lot wrong, but still, if I see his name in the credits I'll give it a shot because when he gets it right, he gets it REALLY right.

Hand of God was incredible. Perlman is on point throughout the entire season. Definitely give it a shot.

Nope nothing on that list should worry Netflix, well apart from The Man in the High Castle. Amazon got a long way to go.

It can be weird at time, but there's many laughs to be had.

I can't say any plot descriptions really interests me enough to watch. It seems that historical dramas (or whatever you want to call them) are becoming popular so Amazon tries to get in on the action.

I've missed Ryan Kwanten. Edge sounds interesting! Hopefully it'll get picked up.

My problem with Amazon is their shows have ponderous weighty subjects . All hoping to win awards they forget about actually entertaining the masses. In plain word they are boring!

Well I've watched all the premiere episodes of The Man in the Hugh Castle, Red Oaks, Hand of God & Bosch. All were good shows I've just got a very full Sky+ recordings I need to get through lol. Out of all the other pilots that were given series orders I think I'll give Good Girls Revolt a go and Patriot. Just have more pressing to priorities but I'll get round to them 👍!

I don't know what it is: maybe a personal preference, but Amazon shows don't work for me the same way Netflix shows do. The only Amazon original I have truly enjoyed is The Man From The High Castle while I have enjoyed a vast majority of the Netflix Originals.

Did you try Bosch? I feel like that could easily have been a Netflix original. Aside from that Amazon simply doesn't have all that much worthwhile shows yet.

What about Sneaky Pete? Wasn't that a pilot on Amazon this year as well?

Thank you for the info. I loved the pilot and was hoping that it was going to make the cut for series material.

Really liked Hand of God so I'm glad it got renewed, wasn't expecting it after I read that it wasn't very well received.

Strangely enough I didn't enjoy all of these picked-up pilots except for One Mississippi and Patriot. I did, however, enjoy Edge. It was fun, with some great shootouts. I would've loved to see more of that (plus, that ending was such a cliffhanger).
