American Horror Story: Hotel Season Premiere Review: The Four Seasons of Dying

American Horror Story: Hotel S05E01: "Checking In"

So last night's excellent American Horror Story: Hotel season premiere ended with Wes Bentley's detective character basically acting out the lyrics to “Hotel California.” The first episode "Checking In" had him returning to the seductive and popular Room 64 to, quoting six-string sage Den Henley, “find the passage back to the place” he was before. That “place” being less of an actual location and more a state of mind. Whoa. Why, it was in these very halls Detective Lowe caught a glimpse of his dear kidnapped son Holden. Who wouldn't want to book a stay?

Like so many doomed residents of the Hotel Cortez—the ornate downtown Los Angeles establishment set to play host to Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's yearly master class in sensual horror, deadpan witticisms, and romantic tragedy, Detective Lowe risks falling prey to the lures of this cursed hotel. Whether '90s junkie, creepy toe head, glamorous drag queen, outright sex monster, or blood-eating orgy maven, the amenities offered up by the Hotel Cortez are simply... TO DIE FOR!

If you haven't noticed, American Horror Story is great at first episodes. One benefit of a standalone anthology is how much novelty there is in learning the rules of a new world season after season. Apart from drinking in the magnificence of the building's architecture, the episode itself was always plotty enough, while taking time to revel along the way via swoopy crane shots, lines like Kathy Bates calling foreigners "dumb Swedish meatballs," and a sequence set to "She Wants Revenge" that started with this...

...and ended with this:

These guys know what they're doing! Let's have a closer look though, shall we?

On top of a detective-versus-serial-killer plot line, the check-in process of some gorgeous aloof tourists organically introduced us to the various peculiarities we might expect from Hotel Cortez. At first even they were like, "No way, uh uh, this seems wrong," but the desk clerk Iris kind of bullied them into staying.

Things weren't so bad, a drag queen named Liz Taylor doing maintenance in the halls was certainly no cause for alarm...

Denis O'Hare rules! But so yeah, basically the two Swedes were immediately assaulted by dark forces and locked up in a neon art dungeon.

This thread, and others throughout the hour, teased just enough character backstory concerning Bates' strict desk clerk Iris and her connection to the likes of insatiable group-sex fiends Donovan (Matt "God's Own Walking Dimple" Bomer) and the Countess (Lady "Lady Gaga" Gaga!), as well as Hypodermic Sally (Sarah "Best Character Name" Paulson).

Apparently there was some beef between Hypodermic Sally and Iris, and their argument alluded to how the Countess likes her prisoners to be cleansed with oysters and champagne for some malevolent purpose. Also a monster f*cked Max Greenfield with a spike, but that's to be expected.

Yes my dearies, this hotel was Creepsville central, but I can't give too much credit to Murphy and company in the originality department I'm afraid, because it looks like for the most part they just ripped off wholesale the credits sequence for Gordon Ramsay's show Hotel Hell. See for yourself:

The similarities are hard to ignore:

I know AHS is all about homages, but shame on Fox for allowing such blatant plagiarism to occur under its own nose. If Murphy and his band of scarymakers aren't careful, the next two seasons will be American Horror Story: Courthouse and American Horror Story: Prison. They at least owe Gordon Ramsay a "created by" credit.

Next: Glue as lube is a bad decision

I"m writing this comment because of all the other solid comments I've read and I want to voice my own opinion.

When AHS first came out I loved it, Murder house was such a solid story and I think was one of their best seasons. Asylum I loved as well with the multiple plot points and differing degrees of grey moral areas they explored while also not being afraid of going for big story like the demonic posession. And the scene in the asylum where jessica lange breaks out into a full song and dance number was so original and fun to watch!

Coven was where the franchise started to lose me, The first minutes of the premier with all the sadistic torture and gruesome scenes seemed indulgent and I feel like thats a stream they've just ran with in later seasons. Tbh I barely watched coven and didnt keep up with its plot points much.

When Freakshow came out I was excited to get a fresh start and be able to enjoy a solid show again but even though I watched every episode I still found it lacking. Most of the shows novelty wears off pretty quickly and the scenes of violence in it just seem to be there for the sake of gruesome violence. I feel that after a certain point they stopped really trying to say or do anything and just started to coast off the fact that they we're such a "Quirky" and "different" show while not really backing anything up in any way. Not to mention Freakshow I feel definitely had some issues with stream of consciousness but even though they introduced so many different stories it wouldnt have been bad if the writers had actually successfully capitalized on them instead of just kind of writing whatever down and then moving on whenever their whims decided to. On top of that the entire series really just comes off as a serialized version of that 1930's movie Freaks where the fit and beautiful strongman and acrobat scheme to poison the dwarf to steal his money until the freaks discover this and mutilate them in revenge. The massacre at the end for me kind of just summed up the series where it was all kind of a waste of time and now they were just wrapping it up with the final message half assedly coming off as "everyones a special butterfly flower" .

With that in mind I was reluctant to start Hotel, The theme seemed a bit tired and the promotion of Lady Gaga alienated me from it further. I tried not to let that bother me much though because I had similar concerns about adam levine in season 2 and how they utilized him was actually hilarious and different. It's now Jan 1st and I thought I should probably start watching Hotel finally but before I did I decided to read this to make sure there wasnt anything in the episode that couldnt be "Unseen" after reading this article and all of your comments I realize I'm not alone in alot of my feelings towards the show and I don't think the chances of me watching Hotel are that good. It seems to be just as over the top as always but now with less charm and kitsch that the earlier seasons had and the 10 commandments killer seems like a rip off of Kevin Spacey in Seven. The spike dildo also seems like its just been completely lifted from seven. I'm startiing to Ramble so I'll end with this: In later seasons I hope AHS returns to storytelling and trying to tell something worthwhile instead of just being a high budget soap opera with occasional mutilation/torture porn scenes and beautiful naked people covered in blood.

Dear American Horror Story,

We've had a complicated relationship and because of that, I'm conflicted about what to do next.

When we first met in the Murder House, it was campy and silly. The sort of fun that belongs in my TV watching rotation. When we hooked up again in Asylum, things were amazing! Dark and twisted, but still that same level of organic fun. Things got a little more light hearted when we hung out in New Orleans. It was like a combination of our two previous encounters.

But then there was that time at the Freak Show, where for me, things went completely off the rails. That weird quirkiness that I found so cool in the beginning lent itself to, "Umm...WTF are you doing?". And I started to wonder if you were just a little too out there for me.

But not wanting to make a rash decision, I gave us a break and some time apart knowing that we'd have time to get reacquainted in Hotel which looked like the same sort of fun crazy as Asylum. 20 minutes into the premiere however, and I was REALLY starting to doubt whether we had a future together or not. Not wanting to become jaded early, I turned you off hoping that I just wasn't in the frame of mind for you at the time.

I'll give you another shot in a couple of days because Hotel looks like something I should LOVE. I just hope we haven't grown too far apart to the point where there is no coming back.

Yours always,
Marcus

It seems like they are repeating themselves. It felt very season 1. Instead of a house that kills people and traps their ghosts, we have a hotel that does the same. Season 1 is not the only well they have re-tapped the serial killer aspect mirrors Bloody Face from season 2. Not that I didn't enjoy the episode, as I did. Just felt a little repetitive.

Well it appears that it is a follow up to Murder House as the real estate agent returned from season 1. The hotel and the house might be connected in some way

Oh, the outfits! (Especially that amazing floaty robe/cloak Liz Taylor was wearing) Oh, the sets! Oh, the on-the-nose references! Oh, the ridiculous sex scenes! Oh, the gore! AHS, I have missed you SO much, you don't even really need to make sense....

Great review/photo recap, Ryan. Welcome aboard!

So, basically Lady Gaga is playing her own crazy artistic persona and "borrowing" everything from the 1983 movie "The Hunger," except that instead of Catherine Deneuve and David Bowie, we have Lady Gaga (*Sigh*) and Matt Bomer. I miss the Belle du Jour.

I usually don't like celebrities posing as actors. They can only play a limited range of characters, usually only play themselves, and have to be seen in a positive light. And in this case it's worse, since I don't like Lady Gaga and she has an important role. With so many competent actresses, it was a cheap ploy to get a singer/media personality to replace the great Jessica Lange.

Other than that, the show kept dropping visual clues, and, at some point, I started wondering if there was an actual story going on. Hopefully, the following episodes will focus more on the story.

On the bright side it was refreshing to see a haunted/horror hotel in a glamorous setting instead of the usual dark, old and dusty place. It was very creepy.

there was too much unbelievable stupid in this premiere...What kind of hotel leave a window open where a body can fit through it with no problem...The imagery was too on the nose too...like seriously the Noseferatu playing in the park...The hotel California music in the background ending on "You can check out anytime you like...but you can never leave" Seriously why not just spell it out for us in alphabet soup. Why are they doing this whole you die here so you are stuck here narrative again just like the first movie

First off, and no offense at all Ryan, BUT NO MORE PRICE!!?? An AHS recap without Price Peterson is like an OUAT recap without Lily Sparks. Sigh.

Then second, the show... I dont know how I feel about it. I didn't even finish the last season (did read the recaps though). So am hoping this season will draw me back in. What I missed from this episode mostly, was a semblance of a storyline. It felt like random stuff put together in a hotel. In previous seasons there were storylines, right from the get go. Good to see a lot of these people though! Sarah Paulson will always make me come back so thats all I need.

I too am very curious as to why Price isn't covering this show any more.. Ryan certainly did a fine job with this review & I also mean no offense but..but..but.. where is Price?? Does he just have a lot on his plate right now and just couldn't do it because reasons lol or is it because he no longer wanted to cover it? Inquiring minds want to know...

I also thoroughly agree with your assessment of the first episode.. I'm willing to give them a few episodes to start bringing some of these elements together but for some reason I don't have a lot of hope.. Maybe it's because Scream Queens is such a bangin' show & I'm worried that doing both projects will lessen the amount of love & attention to AHS. Plus Lady Gaga.. ugh. As soon as I'd heard she was cast I was groaning, I have some serious questions as to her acting ability. Her whole persona just bugs the fuck out of me.

Voted with my feet (finger?) during Freak Show but out of respect for prior seasons I tuned in to see what's what.

What did I love about this episode? ARCHITECTURE. Yumm, yumm. lapping up that set. Everything about Max Greenfield's performance and the spike reaming monster. In fact, hats off to all the monsters (well done, makeup dept) although if they all turn out to be old vampires, well you know... yawn. Although I quite like the sparkly gloves. And I am quite excited by Liz Taylor... looking forward to more of that!

On the other hand, could care less about spooky little kids and unfortunately the story itself seemed to rely on throwing together a bunch of old horror tropes and I would so love someone to come up with something new! And I'm not talking about Gaga. I must one of the few people on the planet that wasn't anticipating her (I tuned out of all AHS buzz last year) but she was fine. Hating on her is a waste of energy, was she ever going to blow your mind... be better than Jessica Lange? No, so let it be.

But let's see where it goes. Luckily for AHS some other premieres recently have been shiteful, so there is less competition for my eyeballs.

I agree about gaga. I tried to think about her outside of who she is: what I mean by that is, lady gaga herself is a polarizing figure. Some people lobe her and some hate her, so it stands to reason that some will love and some will hate her performance on this show, and a lot of (though not all of) those opinions will match up with what the person thought of her prior to her casting. I suppose I was in the minority going in as I was neither a gaga lover or hater going in, so I just thought to take, and evaluate, her performance as if she were just any other new player added to this season. Not as "I love lady gaga and this was also great," or "I love her but this disappointed" or "I hate lady gaga and this is ridiculous and she sucks," but more of, "okay, this is the new actress they brought on, let's see what happens." And after this premiere, that is still how I feel. I was neither blown away nor disappointed by her performance, I felt it was just fine so far and whatever else unfolds will determine whether I like, or do not like, her presence on the show. The hype of how famous she is makes it easier to either praise or dismiss this early on, so I try to ignore that and think of her as any other new player, and since we are only one episode in, my opinion is yet to be determined: as I imagine it would be for most if she were not already famous: we would just all be wondering what is up with this Countess and where her thread will lead instead of fawning over or panning Lady Gaga. Jmo...

I honestly think that AHS has proven to have its own style. Introducing characters and their stories (backgrounds, individual character developments etc.) in a very non-linear way to show how much their viewers should pay attention. The writer intrigues obviously the people that are first interested in that particular genre of art. And I am not talking about the gory sceneries but the art of the design of the set and reason for the non-linear storytelling. It is evident that they like to keep their viewers always thinking so they can keep watching. This is a great way to even catch the eye of someone who may not even think to watch AHS. Making the brain circulate and throwing in non predictable elements are great traits to have in a series. It keeps the run going and that's why they have made it to Season 5. There is a reason why the show is still running. Because enough people are still watching. Other than that, there are always going to be a reasonable unsatisfied group of audience. But those are the ones that don't need to watch it in the first place because they don't either understand the purpose of the story-telling method that AHS has been doing since the Pilot or they are not interested in the genre at all.

Appreciate good work guys. It's greatly casted as well and is probably going to run until the writing team runs out of ideas/concepts for each season. Its a very challenging thing to do these days especially when so many things have already been done. We're bound to see similarities in everything we watch now

"Like any smart TV show, we were provided few answers"
Funny you should say that, because the main problem I had with this premiere was just how much we were already being told. The intro to the episode was awesome, with the monster in the mattress, the maid getting the blood out of some sheets and the creepy children in the hallways (sure, they were a little cliché but still fun to watch). So many questions, so much confusion. What the hell was going on? AHS at its best!
But then we found out about the Countess, and how she eats people (or at least drinks their blood) and how the Swedish girls were just going to become her next meal, and the creepy children were probably all kidnapped by her at some point to be turned into vampire children of some sort. Sure, we don't know what their deal is entirely, but we know they have a tetris room and Gaga is the reason why they're there, so the mystery just lost most of its appeal.

Ok, onto something else then... Kathy Bates' character. What's her deal? Why does she not like Sally? Oh, that guy's her son? What's their story? Oh. He was a junky who overdosed and Gaga revived him, so Kathy Bates is there because she wants to keep an eye on him... Huh.

I imagine the other monsters are all deformed versions of vampires, or something along those lines, so there really are no large lingering questions other than "who's the serial killer and why does he want the detective to go to the hotel?".
I hope AHS manages to prove me wrong in all my assumptions, and knowing AHS it probably will, but I would have enjoyed having a few more reasons to come back next week.

I'm on the fence with this season, I'll start that I was iffy to begin with because everything seem to focus more on the fact that Lady Gaga was going to be in it so it was mostly articles raving about what Gaga would bring to the show. It was beginning to feel like the show belonged to her. But that's not her fault I know, so I waved that away and tuned in and already the homages were in abundance. I think I spent most of the episode playing "I spy" with the homages and when you do that it feels less and less genuine and more like a mash up of plagiarized ideas.

And I do not hate Gaga, I am not a fan but I feel indifferent towards her. With that in mind when she was on screen I didn't think "Oh that's the Countess!" nope every time all I could see was Gaga. Her acting isn't superb or anything special, I feel that she needs work. But she didn't have many speaking parts so she'd had to convey a lot in silent moments with body language and her general presents which at times felt stiff and when not stiff it felt sluggish. I admit that I may be judging too soon. But still she's a singer/preforming artist stepping into an acting role so I suppose she'll be under more scrutiny.

I don't want to call AHS plagiarized or bad but after last year I'm very cautious. I watched almost all of Freakshow (I always miss an episode or two when the schedule conflicts with something else that I plan on watching), and with Freakshow I could not find a plot to explain, I couldn't excitedly talk to my friends about what made it so good other than it being more like a dramatic soap opera with a lot of potential and ideas that were forgotten or done poorly. And just like before I cannot find the ability to explain what is happening. I can explain some of the events that happens but that doesn't really explain the theme of addiction and the 'not vampires' vampires.
As messed up as it is so far I'm only interested in the 10 Commandments killer. Everything else feels like they revealed too much too soon. I know it's not fair to make such judgement based on the first episode but Freakshow sorta burned me and I get that feeling here. But like with Freakshow I know that I'll watch just about all of it.
Before anyone bothers to write that old tired "If you don't like it don't watch it!" crap I'll say this I continue to watch it because I actually have hope for AHS for what it was and what it can be and do. We speak our disappointment and displeasure because for the time we were actually invested in AHS. Not everything that you may like will get glowing reviews of praises, that's just how the world and opinions work.

ok that was the Most Epic American Horror story Season Premier!
i mean i love American horror story actually i am a huge fan of it the only season i didn't like much was season 3 coven but 1 2 and 4 were awesome specially 2 Asylum but when we take about season 5 Hotel i think Hotels are a a promising Zone for some awesome Horror Stories if we looked back we will find one of the greatest horror Classics (the shining) were in a hotel
and also one of the greatest modern horror movies (1408) was also about a Hotel or a Hotel Room to be specific
so anyway back to AHS Hotel
the episode was so amazing the acting the makeup the environment itself was so charming for any horror fan out there this is the good stuff for you
and the creators of that show proved to everyone who was whining and complaining about "oh man they should cancel AHS oh man they should give up already blah blah blah"
well in your face haters please go whine about something else lol
because AHS is back for business and they are good at it ;)
anyway i just thought to share my opinion about the season premier
it's very promising and i have a good feeling about it
cheers

I felt this was an ok start to a weak premise. And I could not stand lada gaga at all.
Actually, if you take out the one particularly gruesome murder scene that lingered in my mind... this wasn't a particularly strong episode. There wasn't a whole lot of focus - something this show has never been great at is proper storytelling. I expect that by episode 3 fragments of a story will start to solidify... and then in episode 4 a plot twist will be introduced to completely derail the existing plot fragments.
In short, I'm not expecting much, but will obviously be around for the ride.

While I would say this was the best AHS premiere so far, I'm prepared for the quality to drop.

As always, the cast is amazing.

Sadly, as a Swede, I really whish they could have found TWO Swedish actresses; while Helena Mattson is vey much Swedish (and a decent actress) Kamilla Alnes, being from Norway, had a very clumsy "Swedish" prenounciation. And, I'm sad to say, her acting was... well... less then amazing :/ But then again - since they are both blonde, I'm guessing that the casting directors got want they wanted...

Also - really nice seenig Marcy (and Christine Estabrook) again - very sad to hear about the Harmon dog though :'(

Sally, i already like a lot...she seems really freaky...

What an eyesore! Enough with the fish eye and what the hell was that dolly in/out with the detective?
As usual not scary, and dumb. The Seven homage just made me wanna turn off AHS and pop in my Seven bluray. The Shining? Enough with this overrated pice of shit! And if your going to homage it, at least homage the cinematography - the only thing that was good about that movie.
And can you stop with the ass rapping scenes? The only effect it has on viewers is imagining Ryan Murphy drooling and getting a hard on while watching on set.
Honestly I think I prefer Ryan's spoofs on Scream Queens, than his homages in AHS. IMO TV can't be scary, I prefer a horror satire than a "trying and failing to scare" horror.

I think you came to this show, or at least this episode/season, with a mistaken preconception of what to expect. Maybe borne of a misunderstanding of what can be classified as horror? To scare is not a necessary aspect of horror.

I never said it wasn't horror, I said it's not scary. And for me that is a big part of what I look for in horror. I enjoy getting scared, watching gore (from a makeup effects interest), or being disturbed by images and sounds in a psychological way. Unfortunately most movies/tv shows fail on those counts, except for the gore.

I'm not a critic but I still watch the show because I love some of the recurring cast, and as a film student it's pretty much my homework watching and analysing movies/tv. I loved it. It was a good premiere and overall set up, with room for the story to develop and grow. I'm curious though, in one scene one of the Swedish girls woke up cos of the alarm clock and saw the other girl seemingly dead and being eaten by the creepy children, and later both girls were still alive and trapped in the cages seemingly unharmed. Just a bit confused on that part...

Also, in the police's murder case file photos, they mentioned the victim had wounds caused by some metallic substance up his rear end, which seemed likely to be caused by that drill bit dildo monster that raped Max Greenfield...

Me too!! I'm so glad I missed that cuz I would have been even more messed up had I known when I was watching the scene.

You thought it was excellent? I thought it was all freakshow no, substance ... No story or suspense, just a frame after frame of gruesome acts and weird camera angles. Like a salad bar of rotten options. But maybe it will smooth out to a good story. I'd like that. I liked this show from the start.

Wes Bentley and Chloe Sevigny's characters were so the opposite of what they usually play. Never expected to see them so conservative. Weird.

I don't know what it was about this episode... but I was left feeling very underwhelmed and unenthusiastic about the upcoming season. I hope that my gut feelings are wrong though, because I have enjoyed all the previous seasons very much.

Being raped by a drilldo-demon, an orgy-bloodbath and whatever the hell that couple at the other hotel was all abut - made you feel underwhelmed? Gurrl, wtf!?
I almost felt as if my innocent mind got raped by the illuminati rain man. What the hell do you watch, in order to get grossed out? :O

But that's just getting grossed out. If you took those little parts out would the episode and plot have held its own?

Very dark and disturbing - and great! Hope the quality keeps up this year! I'm also a big fan of the AHS premieres - but I'm sure people who aren't fans of these kind of shows are like - WTF disgusting - lol. 9/10.

I was wondering (worried) how AHS: Lady Gaga Hotel was going to be in the premiere, but I was pleasantly surprised. So strange spooky, as always, and the character that Lady Gaga plays is kinda perfect for her, at least so far.

I don't think that the character of Countess is perfect for Lady Gaga, it just seems like she's just Lady Gaga. It sorta feels like I could do an image search of her that has nothing to do with AHS and I'll find pictures of her that'll fit into this season.

I haven't seen much of Lady Gaga as an individual. I only know she wears outrageous outfits. So you're right it's more like a character that's molded to her.

Any one have any idea of the time line here?

Commander Sam Vimes always reads to his son at six, no excuses.

What would you do if you got a distress call from your wife while reading to your only child? He did tell the uniform to keep an eye on her.

You could call their seduction getup a lot of things.
But casual?!?

A superb première, as always.

- The detectives Daughter. She'll be the final girl.

- They're all going to die, but not really.

- Well AHS usually disappoints in the latter half of the season so...

- Magnificent.

I'm a glutton for punishment, but my hopes are way up now after having watched the premiere. Damn, so good. This could be better than Coven and Freak Show combined. Not too hard.

Gaga was good. The murders were fucked up. The characters are creepy and intriguing. Visuals, as always, amazing. I miss Jessica Lange, but I just have to get over it. Angela Bassett and Evan Peters will help too. Too early for theories yet, but I'll keep my eye out.

Quick Q, does anyone think I should try to rewatch Freak Show? I do tend to appreciate the seasons more upon the second viewing. But I was just so disappointed in the last one. Excited for this one though. The Hotel California, indeed.

still credited in the opening, but given the role he's playing this season (easy to google if u wanna be spoiled) i'm guessing he won't have as much screen time :((

Do I want to be spoiled? No... maybe? OMG I don't know... is he the killer dude who is messing with the cop guy? Wait, no don't answer that... I'll google it because I can't control myself.

I loved it! Lady Gaga was amazing! This role is perfect for her. And yes, no Jessica Lange is like a fresh air to the show. So that the show will not always revolve around her character (like in season 2-4). I believe this season is gonna be wayyy better than Freak Show.

Can't say I was overly impressed. Visually it looks great and nice scenery. Plot wise? Not so much. I fear that this season they put more thought in how show looks than what it wants to tell.

The thing I see is that these stories are not happening in order we saw them but there is some time shifting, not counting flashbacks

I enjoyed it, there was so much going on. I'm surprised I like this type of genre considering I look away through most of it. But either way, no matter how disgusting it gets this was excellent. And I like that I have no idea what's going on.
Seriously what is going on?
I was sad there was no Evan Peters this episode but I was super excited for Max Greenfield, I hope that wasn't the last of him.

He has a contract deal for at least 5 episodes I read somewhere. So that would mean he is in at least 4 more episodes. He needs work now that New Girl is getting less episodes and being held off until mid season.

Great first episode - it is such a shame that it will more than likely go downhill in the middle - but at least it did what Scream Queens is failing at - be SCARY

Please Ryan Murphy, sort it out so we can finally have a great season after two lackluster seasons - it has SO much potential this year

That's my opinion - i just really do not find it funny - the comedy is easy - a teenager could come up with better meta-jokes and digs at pop stars

Scream Queens isn't meant to be scary. That's not the point.

It should have a mix of comedy and horror - that is the point - it is not supposed to be a full on comedy - because it is not working

It is only 4 episodes in and the season will have a total of 15 or 16 episodes. Cant remember the exact number but it is one of those numbers. It really is not supposed to be a horror show. It is mainly considered a comedy which it delivers extremely well on.

Yeah sorry you don't like it kevbuffylost108 but like Husky and Tanner I'm really enjoying Scream Queens - like 10x more than I thought it would. The horror comedy mix really works for me and I like the over the top nature of the show too. Very different from AHS - but just as good IMO.

Checking in?! Hell, I'm moving in! This was a delightful premiere and although I didn't hate Coven or Freakshow this looks like it is gearing up to be the best season yet! I NEVER thought I would say this... but I didn't even miss Jessica Lange. *cue gasps* Is it just me or is trashy Sarah Paulson so hot?

I like the claustrophobic feel that the corridors and rooms of the hotel create. More than that I don't have much to say. The premiere didn't really give a sense of direction for the rest of the season.

I have to mention something about Lady Gaga's performance though. It's interesting that her voice, despite it being the most important instrument in her job, is so weak, uncharismatic and dull when acting. It had no colour to it. Even if the character she plays is supposed to have a monotonous voice, most actresses would be able to put some life and personality into a voice like that just by delivering their lines in a certain way.

She is a terrible actress which is why she does not bring that character to life like she should be doing. Acting is not her thing and she should just stick to music. She has gone to school for acting but it shows that it has not paid off and was a waste.

i'm willing to give her more than one episode before i judge her - especially that harshly.. but i thought she did fine in this ep.. and she went topless for a vamp orgy so - bonus points even! :)

First episode looks good, is like a peculiar mix between The Shinning+The Hunger+Twin Peaks which is a cool thing. i'm not sure why the cop decided to move to the same hotel the serial killer teased him earlier to be honest, i' m quite sure L.A is big enough with plenty hotels to pick from.

Last season was very dissapointing on my book (it started good then half way tanked) , so i´m eskeptical about this one yet i´ll give it a go. Maybe i'll be the only one who won't miss Mrs Lange at this point and i also happen to adore Matt Bomer acting (not only his good looks) , he was so impressive in the normal heart that he won me over. Denis O'hare is already giving me life and a half (cape flip anyone?) , Mrs Bates is always a treat to watch and i can't wait for Miss Basset to show up.

With that said, Is 2015 so the vampire stuff is pretty wore out as a narrative in pop culture by now IMHO but again let's see how it goes, people say you get to know if a show will be good by the 3th episode so i will do that.

About Lady Gaga's acting skills...well...again is too early to tell, She' s very visually stylish but not sure that would make up for lack of acting chops in the long run if that' s the case (specially in a AHS post Jessica Lange). I would hate to remember this season as "that LG stupid season", Her casting is very much an unapologetic "gay bait move" from Mr Murphy to be honest. but again...only time will tell.

I thought this episode was a hell of a lot better than anything Freakshow ever dished out. The only exciting part that I can honestly remember from the Freakshow pilot was Twisty the Clown and the only other stuff I remember is a lot of brooding Jessica Lange. This pilot wasn't my favorite (no matter what you think of Coven, it will always have the best pilot to me) but I thought it was interesting. After watching American Horror Story for five years, we have all figured out what the show is good at and what the show is bad at. Last night was definitely a mixed bag of pros and cons (the biggest con for me was the entire scene with Max Greenfield which I honestly just found brutal, traumatizing, and completely unnecessary). Some of the pros were: there is a certain spark of intrigue that the Freakshow pilot lacked, NO ANNOYING ACCENTS, I enjoyed GaGa because they didn't force her down our throats like in the advertising campaign - they seemed to let her be an eerie lingering figure and I enjoyed that, and I felt like they gave the actors all interesting roles to play. So this pilot wasn't the best but it most definitely wasn't the worst. Let's just all brace ourselves for the inevitable rollercoaster ride of the quality in the show. One episode will be amazing and the next will be worse than a B-movie. I left more satisfied with this one than dissatisfied and that's probably due to a lack of high hopes.
This episode gets a B from me.
