American Horror Story: The Downside of Fame

You know it's been a good episode of TV when the end credits list a character named "New Pope." After last week's unpleasant bummer of an episode, this week's "Spooky Little Girl" upped the insanity and also turned the screws on Ben in a very satisfactory way while marginalizing Violet entirely. Although American Horror Story has flirted with real-life atrocity in the past by alluding to the Manson murders and Columbine, this episode finally went so far as to involve itself in one of the more notorious crimes in L.A. history—the Black Dahlia murder—which was nothing short of gutsy (no pun intended). This episode definitely put a smile on my face (no pun intended). It really left me bisected in a field! (That's a saying right?)

We'll get to the more amazing revelations in a second, but first let's talk about the thrust of the episode: Ben's ever-weakening brain. As far as I'm concerned, he's basically the villain of the season, so it was incredibly satisfying to see him fall apart throughout the episode. After cheating on Vivien multiple times, he's had the nerve to distrust her cries for help, have her committed, and THEN in this episode accuse her of infidelity when he found out that Vivien's unborn twins have different fathers. Because oh yeah, Vivien's twins have different fathers. Now, obviously there have been spooky circumstances surrounding Vivien's pregnancy from the get-go, but rather than entertain the idea that perhaps Vivien's claims of Rubber Man rape might be real, Ben has now decided that Vivien's been sleeping with Security Dude Luke (well before he installed the alarm system, apparently).

In a truly despicable moment, Ben visited Vivien's bedside and gave her a sanctimonious speech about what a great family man and loving husband he is, and then basically called his near-catatonic wife a dirty whore whom he will never respect or help. As much as Vivien probably could have done a better job at avoiding being institutionalized (attacking an orderly presumably didn't help), it was still pretty upsetting to see Ben talking to her this way.

Constance returned this week and she was just as amazing as ever. Is it just me, or is Constance slowly morphing into a heroine? There've been heavy implications that Constance is somehow involved in Vivien's pregnancy, or at least knows exactly what is in her womb. But this week when she learned Tate had fathered one of the twins, she seemed upset and angry with him. Maybe her creepy interest in Vivien's pregnancy exists simply because she just really does like babies? Then later she paid Vivien a visit at the institution and Vivien seemed genuinely grateful, particularly when she opened up about her spectral rape and Constance wholeheartedly believed her. It's still difficult to know what exactly Constance's goals are, but this episode went a long way in suggesting that she's just a weird lady with ultimately decent intentions.

To Ben's credit, it was fairly believable that Vivien would sleep with Luke in the sense that Luke is AWESOME. Seriously, is he not the best character on the show right now? In a straight-up chump move, Ben set off his own alarm so that Luke would show up in person, and then Ben accused Luke of having knocked up Vivien. Luke just coolly dismantled Ben's story: He's sterile, plus he would've stepped up to keep a woman he was gettin' with. AND THEN Luke successfully pointed out that Ben is awful for the reasons I've pointed out above, and also that Vivien is probably better off in the institution and away from Ben. TEAM LUKE.

Speaking of awesome, I think I'm slowly coming around on Hayden? True, she'd been mostly shrieky and unstable up until now, but this episode was a great showcase for the character and what makes her tick. While it's still ludicrous to think that Ben could have personally buried her dead body, paved over it, built a gazebo atop it, and STILL believe her reappearance was just a prank, I did enjoy the scene where Hayden's sister showed up with a private eye and Hayden just sort of walked in all like, "What's up?"

Also, I loved how she seduced Constance's jailbait boyfriend for the simple reason of wanting to know whether she could have sex with living humans. Apparently she can! Throughout the episode Hayden treated Vivien's absence as a boon in her plan to settle down with Ben. But then his awfulness more or less became clear to her and she seemed to get over the idea by episode's end. Credit where credit's due: She's not dumb! Also, there was a nice moment when Hayden pep-talked the ghost of the Black Dahlia (Mena Suvari) because, OH YEAH, the Black Dahlia was in this!

Apparently a half-century of investigation work and the obsessions of James Ellroy himself never uncovered the REAL story of the Black Dahlia, which we now know involved a dentist/rapist who operated out of the Murder House, plus the slice-and-dice expertise of a certain ether-sniffing abortionist ghost. I still kind of can't get over the audacity of American Horror Story not only including a real-life murder in its mythology, but also purporting to SOLVE it. Amazing! See, there were perfectly reasonable explanations for Elizabeth Short's gruesome demise. Bisecting her body and draining its blood just made it easier to transport out of the Murder House, and carving a joker smile into her face would make her look happy for eternity! It's just a good thing she was dead before the mutilation, because then scenes like this wouldn't look quite as sexy:

Moira spent a majority of the episode in her sexy guise, doing her best to seduce Ben. For someone who's seemed pretty sympathetic toward Vivien in the past, it was unclear what exactly Moira was up to here. Driving Ben crazy? Or maybe she was just horny. Who knows? But in one of the show's best moments, Ben started coming to his senses when he found the Rubber Man's mask and suddenly started doubting Vivien's insanity. Then, when he demanded answers from Moira, she confirmed that Vivien isn't crazy and he almost immediately began to see her in her elderly visage. It was a pretty clever visual metaphor for his delusions clearing up, and a nasty little reminder that every time Moira had behaved sexily, it was actually a sixty-something old woman doing the gyrations.

Another notable event was a somewhat crazy scene involving Constance informing her young boyfriend Travis that he would be a father. I think she was implying that Vivien and Ben would probably not survive the delivery and she'd be adopting whatever child was left over, but in any event, Travis did not take it well and stormed out. Then he returned to Murder House for some quick basement nookie with Hayden, who was nursing a broken heart of her own—but when he tried to love her and leave her, she stopped him... with an ice pick. And then his ghost immediately appeared. So yeah, it's as simple as that! Luckily the Black Dahlia and the abortionist ghost were there to lend a hand (plus Larry, who seems to be the Murder House's errand boy), and Travis's corpse got the same treatment the Black Dahlia did in her day. The joke being that both of them were struggling actors thirsting for fame and both would go on to receive that fame in the form of murder headlines. If you ask me, that's not a great trade-off.

This all brings us to the most outrageous and hilarious moment of the episode and possibly of the series so far: The Pope's Box. THE POPE'S BOX! So, a visibly upset Constance invited her favorite Craigslist medium Billie Dean to come chill in her kitchen, then asked what could possibly happen if a ghost knocks up a living person. And that's when Billie Dean rattled off this hilarious story about how when new Popes are chosen, they're presented with a lockbox that contains a piece of paper on which is written a simple formula for bringing about Armageddon (!). And what is that formula, you ask? A ghost knocking up a human being! Billie Dean explained that it's sort of an evil parallel to the immaculate conception (which, surprisingly, made sense), and the further implication is that it wasn't Tate doing the knocking up, but possibly the Devil working through Tate. Now, I don't particularly care about whether Tate's lack of memory about the shooting was honest or not, but it is somewhat intriguing to think that there actually is a larger, more powerful force at work here than a horny ghost teen.

But seriously, THE POPE'S BOX! American Horror Story is seriously implying that the apocalypse will occur upon Vivien's delivery of the twins? Talk about raising the stakes! But also, it makes me laugh that Billie Dean knew all this. What kind of psychic is she again? She's just a medium, right? Has she been chattin' with dead popes? In what language? I'm super curious about this. I hope Billie Dean's pilot gets picked up and that it's a real show we can all watch for real, because she is amazing. Sorry Luke, I changed my mind. TEAM BILLIE DEAN.

I thought this was a great episode, you guys. What did you think?

QUESTIONS:

... Do you think the Devil's working through Tate, or is Tate himself the Devil?

... Is Constance a force of good or evil?

... Whose side is Moira on?

... Isn't the basement getting sort of crowded?

  • The3rdEye

"Because oh yeah, Vivien's twins have different fathers."

Jesus are you really gonna do that in each review? You sound like 14 yr old girl.

"Isn't the basement getting sort of crowded?"

Crowded with what? Ectoplasm? How much space do spirits take up?

    "Whose side is Moira on?"

It's like you don't really watch the show with questions like these. Moira is on Moira's side. Anything or anyone that will allow her to escape her cursed existence is her ally. If Ben can be that person then she's on his side.

omg i love this show talk about DRAMA! This show keeps on suprising me! I cant beileve Violet is dead, yet its kind of romantic at the same time. Knowing that no soul can leave they will always be together. Though I do believe that Tate is the devil himself, because i believe that the devil can distguise him in the most beautiful form. With that being said Tate is so handsome and freaking HOTTTT! But he is really evil and really decieving. The basement is ssssooooo freakin crowded, and sort of spooky. I feel so bad for vivien she is in a tough spot! Ben is also really HOTT! But hes in so much shit its not even funny! I also feel his stress, omg does he have alot of shit on him. One of my favorite parts of the show is when Moira changed in front of if almost automatically when Ben camed to realization that Viv was not crazy! OMG WAS THAT AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!! THATS WHAT HE GETS FOR BEING A BUTTHOLE! lol omg i love love lovvvvvveee this show cant wait till wednsday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!moreless

  • Lollipopfop

Oh and Tate and Violet are always a fun pair. Far better then anything else actually. I really hate it when things get shallow, and you have bad and good characters. This can be better then a silly horror film. It can actually make you care. I certainly will never care about Hayden, or about Vivien. Or about Vivien's black knight in shining uniform. But Moira, Tate, Constance, Violet, Ben, and Addy I really did give a crap about.

  • Lollipopfop

I could do without Vivien. Her sniveling gets on my nerves. She is by far the worst character.

  • Lollipopfop

I absolutely loved the storyline, and I loved the inclusion of Liz Short the black Dahlia. It was a great, fun bit.
We don't even know if the psychic Bobby is even telling the truth about the Pope's box....but something tells me that the twins will match each other out. The human one will free the spirits. The birth in that house will negate all the death, I think. The spirit one may be trouble with a capital T. All good. And Tate in the rubber suit is very, very, very good. Sexy bad ghost boy.

  • glee21217

I don't think that the show should have involved a real life unsolved murder story, but should have made up another fictionalized version. I could see if the show was a dramatization or based on a true story but it is not. It's a television series based in its on reality and I don't like when they mix the un-real with the real. All that being said, I really like this show,

  • nascalifornia

I doubt the information with The Pope's Box will lead to anything substantial. I feel The Pope's Box was added in because the director and writer ran out of concepts to further the story. The idea that the birth of Vivien and Tate's baby will lead to the end of the world is absurd, and it does not fit into the storyline. The show never had anything to do with religion which makes the whole concept of the Anti-Christ seem unreal. After watching this episode, I believe The Pope's Box will lead to the demise of the show. It blows the whole show out of proportion and leaves too much doubt for the viewer on what is to come. Although sometimes that is a good thing, in the case of this show, it will cause many problems when it comes to combining the past storylines to the present.moreless

  • Arnoz2

another good episode from the best newcomer.

  • Marsille

I'm upset, confused... Up until episode 1.07 everything made sense, the series was just pure awesome, it was creepy, scary, the best worst nightmares ever seen on screen. Ep 1.08 sucked cause it really disappointed me with the solution of the rubber man mistery. I'd rather have it unsolved for a long, long time, possibly forever. Now this Antichrist thing is a huge twist, I mean, we all knew the baby was going to be a demon somehow, even when we didn't know it was Tate's, but now it's kind of more than that. There's a goddamn (literally) war between good and evil in Vivien's womb! It is exciting, but still, I don't know.
Oh and one of the reasons for which I hated last episode was Violet being "pretty much dead already" too. Cause, she is, right? I just hate the premise that dead people can just walk around, chat with the living, have sex... and it's not really a premise, it's just something that the show threw at us in the last few weeks. I still don't entirely buy it. It seems just silly. Just like this black dahlia thing now. So silly. Yeah, the basement is getting way too crowded... and strangely enough, week after week, way less scary.moreless

  • TrueTvWatcher

This episode was just pure Awesome! The whole Pope's Secret Box twist was great and gives the series a lot of potential for sticking around a long time. I like the direction things are going. I think the Devil may be working through Tate and other Ghosts perhaps. Constance is good, Moira just wants out of her eternal prison I think, and I like the ghost's under the stairs, haha. I don't think the apocalypse would start right at birth, they anti-christ has to grow up first, which is where the series may have some longevity. Perhaps this is like the old cartoon movie Wizards, where one twin is good and the other is evil and they battle for the fate of the world! This is a brilliant classic, and Jessica Lange is the best!moreless

  • DoctorFame

I think the show loses when it gets all over the place like that. But I liked the end of young Moira trying to seduce Ben, that was boring. Isn't young Moira the true form? She died young.

  • MollieDonohue

Well Ben's just begging to be killed, do a**holes of that caliber even exist? I mean just wow...

  • lisamott666

    I, too, wasn't really happy to find Tate is a baby daddy to a little hooved anti-christ but I gotta admit I'm loving the whole 'Pope's box' twist. It strangely does make sense. I'm also a curious about Billie Dean too, she can know this all powerful secret from the pope but doesn't know about Tate...some loose plotlining methinks. This was a stellar episode though, it was rather bold move with the Black Dahlia but I thought it was fantastic! Suvari was awesome! But there's still so many questions floating around my head though, here's but a few;
    * Is the recurring appearance of the twin theme a pointer to something?
    * Who is Constance's 4th child?
    * Is Violet actually dead? She hasn't left the house for 3 weeks now as far as we know. Did she not survive the suicide attempt after all?!
    * Just who did the hand under Violets bed belong to?

Next week just can't come quick enough!!moreless

  • sasou82

The best scene in this episode was the one with Luke. I hate the fact that Tate is Rubber Man and as much as I like him in the beginning of this show... I am starting to really dislike his storyline. It's just too much! When he was just a (possibly) confused little lovesick teenage ghost he was cool... As a serial murdering perverted lovesick teenage ghost...he's ridiculous. I have hated Ben from the get go and with every episode I keep hoping that he gets killed off (out of the house cuz I do not want him coming back!) Constance is great and so is Vivian. I can't wait til next week's episode since Violet will be back... I hope she's dead too...but for totally different reasons! So for now: Team LUKE! And maybe Team Constance!moreless

Could Billie Dean be Constance's other child?

The officer who came to question Ben was named Jack Colquitt. The protagonist in the Cult Novel by Raul Bloodworth. Second Chance: A Jack Colquitt Adventure

  • Faithin1

I guess I am now slightly disappointed. Excited and disappointed. I liked the ep, and what happened, though I really didn't like Ben and he has been ticking me off for a while, I slightly understood his tirade at the hospital. I mean, Vivien had been blaming him for everything with his infidelity, and faced with evidence that she cheated, I understood his anger. However, I started calling it at the moment it was twins that one would be the child of Ben, and one, Tate/Rubber Man kid. AKA, the Antichrist (apparently). I will even admit that I thought it was twins at impregnation via rubberman.

Why is it though, that Tate can knock someone up but Hayden can't get pregnant? I don't think either would be likely, but why can only male ghosts be fertile? Apparently they all need to wear a rubber.

Meh, overall, I'm just enjoying this as much as any other series, and it really does seem to be constantly jumping the shark. I might finish season 1, don't know if I will tune in for 2.moreless

  • Im_right_aint_i

I loved it. We knew that the thing inside Vivien's womb was'nt good at all (hint : freaking hooves !) but the devil himself ! Wouah... that's a huge promise from the show. I can understand that some viewers found that (and its pope-ish delivery) a bit too much. But for me, it was just entertainment. I mean we're talking about a house haunted by a dozen of ghosts (and growing) who want a baby to satisfy the need of one of them who doesn't know that she's dead. Plus, those ghosts are fertile...

It's good to see that Ben is finally learning something after around two months in that house. I hope that he will soon understand that Hayden is a ghost because, like you said it Price, he buried her himself (with the one-arm-shovel-digging world champion's help).

I'm really intrigued to see where everything is going to.moreless

  • klotensen

OMG WHAT HAPPENED ? THE OTHER TWIN IS THE ANTICHRIST AND THE POPE KNOWS ABOUT IT ! I CANT STOP SHOUTING MY EARS ARE BLEEDING ! CONSTANCE IS NOT A VILLAIN ANYMORE ? and by season 4 THERE ARE MORE GHOSTS IN THAT HOUSE THAN CHARACTERS IN GAME OF THRONES, ALL POSSIBLE SEASONS TOGETHER !

  • ExodusPenguin

Although some of the twists in this episode caught me off guard, I don't think they introduced anything so separate from the universe already created that it took away from the show. With the Pope story at the end, for example, it just pointed to what we already suspected about Tate: that he's the Antichrist, or otherwise the Devil is working through him. Violet's friend was even convinced of this since episode two. So maybe people are more excited about the speculation rather than the confirmation?

For me, these bold choices (twins being separate fathers, Tate being Antichrist) are all fun, campy choices for the writers to make. My biggest issue moving forward though is deciding the rules of the ghosts in the house and making sure everything with them is consistent. The overcrowding issue is valid. Why haven't we seen some of the new ghosts like the Black Dahlia and the dentist in past episodes? Where were they on Halloween?

I just don't want AHS to stray too far from what made it a great show in the beginning: creepy moments, campy moments, and some emotional payoffs. Lately the focus has been solely on the campiness.moreless

  • MollyHolzschl

All the haters of AHS seem to miss the fact that it is camp. It has been comedy and cliche from the first moment, and that's part of it's audacity and ultimately, it's bizarre appeal. I've loved this show from episode 1, and maintain it has to be experienced with the understanding that it should be enjoyed for what it is: Contemporary, over-the-top, ridiculously silly yet charming camp horror.

And what I find frustrating is that all of the haters 1) keep watching; 2) keep reading the reviews; 3) keep posting their opinions. When I hate a show, I just stop watching and cease to care about reviews and what others think. Why? Cuz I don't like it so I check out and don't care. I struggle to understand why people who think this is the worst thing on tv spend so much of their time watchng, reading, writing blah blah blah. If you hate liver do you keep eating it and reading about it and talking about it? No. It's like this site is full of chimps.

    • GeraldC7

It has nothing to do with being a hate. They're just expressing their opinion and the fact that the show has deteriorated so much.
I agree that the show was always over the top, but it always somehow managed to balance both camp and horror and kind of stayed grounded. The problem started with the past few episodes, when it became aware of the camp.

      • christieg77

You seem to think that your opinions are fact and you seem not to understand why people might not agree with you - that the show hasn't deteriorated whatsoever.

      • ExodusPenguin

I think the writers have always been very much aware of its campiness, but only recently cared more about the campiness over the horror and emotion. That balance in the earlier episodes has taken a backseat to the over-the-top storylines in "Rubber Man" and "Spooky Little Girl." Hopefully these campy moments will create insanely creepy and emotional moments for the last few episodes, though. Otherwise the show is in trouble.

Don't mess this one up, too, Ryan Murphy!

  • GirishStewart

"The devil is going to want a little more bang for his BUCK!!"
Now I remember where I recognize Billie Dean from! She was Merlyn Temple from the old "American Gothic" show (which was terrific)!! The nod to Lucas Buck, the evil being in that show was so cool! This episode of AHS was awesome! The ending was just terrific! (I didn't think that was amusing after she explained about it). I agree with you about Hayden. She really came to her senses (though she killed the boy toy) and was the best character in the episode, aside from the always awesome Constance.

-I think Tate has a dual personality and he can't control himself. (Somebody else theorized this last week)
-I think Constance is not a force of evil. Her look in the last was enough to convince me.
-Moira will be on anybody's side as long as she has a chance to move on from that damned place.moreless

From the second episode onwards I've been wrestling with the two theories of Tate either having a dual personality or actually being a twin seen as we're yet to find out who Constances 4th child is...

  • RjBengil

I thought Constance already knew about Vivien getting knocked up by the ghost of the murder house, because why else would she give Vivien brains for the baby? I mean that's a far way off for a neighborly prank...

Anyway, this episode was great as always.

And I wish AHS' photo recaps could be someday become as epic as your TVD recaps...

This show has been disappointing from the start. Its just a mash up of Nip Tuck and American Gothic - and not as good as either show. The only character i would like to see more of is the young redhead maid - and thanks to Ben suddenly deciding that his wife is important to him we may not see her again!!! Its a pity, because the cast is decent, but there doesnt seem to be any direction for the storyline, its never been atmospheric enough to be scary or have any main characters likeable enough to root for.
The handling of the rape and the realization that she was raped were handled badly - and these are not the only times that any attempt at story telling have been botched.
Do i care that Vivien is in a mental hospital - no
Do i care whether the daughter is alive - nope
Do i care that Ben loves his wife - no way.
Then to top it all off, the straw the broke the camels back, we get the popes box.
I cant believe Prime Suspect is cancelled and this crap is still going,
Unless the young redhead comes back i am done watchingmoreless

The show has excellent production values and writing. I would put it on par with X-Files.
I also enjoy the straight dialogue and graphic depictions un-henderd by censorship. If they don't dilute it, or dumb it down to make it more family friendly, American Horror Story could very well revolutionize the genre

As a writer of horror fiction myself, I see where American Horror Story is still searching for it's sub plot or underlying theme. Recent episodes where the Black Dalia case was clumsily injected seems irrelivant and forced. Further implying one the twins is the anti-Christ is also a dated remnant of Rosemary's Baby. To find a vehicle that doesn't involve played out zombies, vampires and werewolves is a refreshing departure. However vast the potential for original material ideas on the dark horizon of horror may be, also risk losing the fright element to concepts too esoteric for the average viewer. The show needs to move into darker areas of lore, deeper than a rubber suited ghost baby-daddy. Perhaps useing the house itself -- even a well beneath it -- as sort of a ancient gateway to malevalent realms the ghost are protecting from discoverymoreless

The thing you have to bare in mind here is that AHS isn't primarily a pure 'horror' show. It isn't meant to be taken as a 'lock-down' genre so to speak. I agree on the whole zombie/vampire/werewolf thing though, it's barely even recycling anymore to plagiarised regurgitation lol. As for picking up remnants, your suggestion for the 'house' surely resembles the actual film from the mid eighties, remade from the 70's Japanese film? I do agree with a lot of your ideas though :D a darker show would be much more entertaining.

    1. i don't think the devil singled out tate and vivien to make his baby, i think he is just taking advantage of the situation.. sort of.. you know: "hey! tate got her pregnant! i'm so there to see my child being born."
the only way i would believe it was devil's work is if they explain the connection to the house, the circumstances (tate and vivien) and to this particular time (you know, why screw us and not the future or the past?) and that is HARD.
    2. i think Constance is neither. she wants the baby bcause she wants to make up the errors she commited with her real children through her grandson, but i think she doesn't care if she has to kidnap the baby for it or something... that's sketchy.
    3. i think moira is on vivien's side all the way. now that ben has passed all of her tests, he has grown enough as a person that he sees her for who she really is and has figured out that he was an ass to vivien. by testiing him (because she doesn't trust men) she can now know that he can be trusted as viven husband and that he won't hurt her, so now she can help them both instead of trying o get viven to leave him on account of him being a cheating %$%^.
    4. it is entirely possible that if all ghosts materialized at the same time the current occupants would choke to death. i mean, they are like 847484787387 of them and i would like to meet them all!moreless

I thought Ben started off the ep almost as a hypocritical creeper, but he made me hopeful by the end. Not by much, though. He still hasn't realized his daughter is still not attending school, and spending the day boning her ghost boyfriend. I.e. his patient

Morris Chestnut rules! Thanks for telling me his name was Luke, but I'll keep calling him Morris Chestnut.

Hayden us growing on me surprisingly, and I'm curious what her plan is now that she seems to have given up on Ben. Though I'm still confused why she didn't know ghosts can have sex with the living. Doesn't she know Tate knocked up Viv, and is sexin' Violet?

I think that something is working through Tate, and he isn't aware of it. I do suspect that his amnesia about his status is bogus, though.

Constance I believe is good despite being a killer. She's in the grips of the house, but I don't believe she truly wants any real harm to come to the Harmons.

Moira is on Moira's side. She'll help anyone who will help free her. Plus, she may feel that if Ben is more aware he will see Hayden for what she is, and dig up their grave freeing them both.
