American Idol season nine world premiere

Over two nights, the American Idol premiere will feature extraordinary talent and outrageous new auditions direct from Atlanta and Boston.

Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, season nine will feature brand new judge Emmy Award-winning talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, who will sit alongside judging team Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi, and offer her own unique perspective on the contestants throughout the competition.

DeGeneres will join the judges' panel after the nationwide auditions, which will feature appearances by rotating guest judges Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige, Kristin Chenoweth, Joe Jonas, Neil Patrick Harris, Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry and Shania Twain.

The lucky contestants to get the judges' vote during these auditions will then move on to the "Hollywood Round" where they will vie for a semi-finalist position.

Once in Hollywood, Ellen will join Simon, Randy and Kara as they continue to whittle down the competitors to a select group of performers who will sing their hearts out each week -- and one will ultimately be anointed the winner of the ninth American Idol title.

Previous contestants have included Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks, Kelly Clarkson and most recently, 2009 runner-up Adam Lambert.

American Idol premieres Wednesday, January 13 and Thursday, January 14 at 7.30pm AEDT. Exclusive to FOX8.
