Amy Brenneman's letter to fans

June 6, 2005

Dear Judging Amy fans,

First of all, let me apologize for the lateness of this note. I realize that the news about the cancellation of Judging Amy came several weeks ago and I wanted to respond right away. I just gave birth to my second child, a son, Bodhi Russell Silberling, on June 8th. That, as you can imagine, has taken precedence over pretty much everything else!

I wanted to personally thank everyone who has watched Judging Amy over the years. Your support allowed us to create the show that we all loved so much. As many of you may know, Judging Amy was a surprise hit. In the fall of 1999 we were very much the underdog. Your early enthusiasm showed the network that this show was worth watching. The fact that you all understood the Gray family, warts and all, made us feel validated and supported. I cannot thank you enough.

Over the years your intelligent comments and keen observation helped keep us honest and on our toes. We would often learn about our show from you. Through ups and downs both on screen and off, I was always aware that Judging Amy was a dialogue between us, the creators, and you, the audience. We learned from one another.

I am sorry CBS cancelled our show. I know many of you feel the same. Through talking to CBS executives I know that it was a terribly difficult decision. It will take time for all of us to adjust to life without Judging Amy.

I do have a few plans up my sleeve that might be interesting to you. The first is releasing our show on DVD, something that (I believe) is very late in happening! The other is a potential two-hour movie to sew up loose ends and end our show properly. If either of these is of interest to you, I encourage you to let CBS know at CBS.com. We need to rally together to show them how strong our Judging Amy team is.

Because of the birth of my son, I won't be able to check back on line very often. But my staff keeps me informed of your comments and thoughts, so keep them coming. I know that all of us at Judging Amy wish you the best and thank you again for believing in what we were doing.

Yours,

Amy Brenneman

I am a Canadian. I 'caught' the program in its last 2 years of airing (sorry, I am not a TV addict, not quite anyway!) I was pleased when the Canadian station W started to air the re-runs, starting from Season 1 Episode 1. That helped to put the last 2 years more in perspective! I applaud the writers. Some of the dialogue that came out of Maxine's or Amy's mouth were so 'well put'. I would tape the episodes and watch them later. If there was one of those 'well put' scenes I would call my husband over and re-play it for him to enjoy.Interesting that the year your program was cancelled seemed to be the year of the loss of the letter "J" - Judging Amy, Joan of Arcadia, and JAG. Hello. I am from Romania and watch the reruns of your show on Hallmark channel here. I have had no idea about the cancellation of your show until today when I first entered this site and read about the movie. I CAN NOT BELIEVE IT!! I've only watched it to the 3rd season, the next seasons are to follow. Actually it has been broadcasted before, i only saw a few episodes but now I am watching it every day and i am stunned at what I am reading here!!! It's 2007, end of May now.
I deeply hope it is not too late and the show can be continued. It has to. It is one of the fewest tv programmes that is worth watching tv for. Better later than never.
The 2-hour movie would be desirable under the circumstances. But the best would be to continue the series. Is there really no other channel interested in doing it? I would find it hard to believe. Well, hoping to have you all back in our homes again,
one of your many admirers in Romania,

    Hello all,
Thanks to the magic of re-runs, I have added myself to the list of those who consider themselves lucky enough to have viewed some quality television programming written/directed by a female. Kudos to you Amy. I am only sorry to see your legacy disappear from prime time. I am intriqued by a artist/song played on season 6 episode 5 (Order and Chaos) as "Maxine" is outside on the hotel balcony smoking. I have no song artist or title. Any thoughts would be GREATLY appreciated.

This show is one of the testaments that time spent watching tv can be elevating as well as interesting.
Congrats to all involved, and please do the 2 hour ending movie!

Dear Amy,I wanted to let you know that my wife and I just loved your show! It's such a loss for all that it was canceled... We have an 8 year old son that was also born in June of 1998 and I have another son that is 15. It was so good to see a real show for the family on the air plus that wrote about the challenges of the juvenile court system! I really with that there were Judges and S/W like what you were in your show but that is not the case.We have been threw a lot with my older son already so we know that to be true. We really hope there will be a special one day but not as yet, It's Feb, 2007 now. But we can still hope! We wish you the best with your new son and all that the future may hold for you :) Will always miss your show! God Bless and take care!-Todd & Karenmoreless

I too am so hooked on this show. I tape all episodes that TNT has been showing. When I got to the last episode, I was eagerly waiting for the next one to see what happened after Amy said she didn't want to be a judge anymore - that she couldn't do it anymore. And that Bruce had left even though I knew they secretly loved each other. Then I find out there WERE no more episodes! I didn't know they had cancelled the show after that. I was SO UPSET! You better believe I will email someone at CBS about having like a reunion movie to put to rest those of us who were left hanging. So many questions left just dangling! This is so cruel!! These networks are famous for doing that to viewers. Just up and cancelling a show after people get all involved in a show's plot line and the characters. It isn't fair to us, I don't care.

Anway, I hope Amy (or someone for her) really does read these postings cause I want her and everyone involved with the show, that it's the best TV show I've seen. The acting, the plots, just everything about the show was so realistic. I couldn't find a single thing that I didn't like about it. Got to go. The next episode is coming on!moreless

    Hi Amy,
I just recently started watching your reruns on TV. We get two episodes every Mon - Fri and my dvr is always almost full of your shows for me to watch. It's a one of my favorite things at the end of the day--to sit down and watch reruns of your show. TV simply doesn't make shows like yours anymore. I've loved watching you work every since I first saw you on NYPD, but for some reason after watching one of the first episodes of JUDGING AMY somehow it did not impress me. I was sooo wrong, and look forward to purchasing your dvd if it is available. I hope that God continues to bless you and your loved ones and look forward to your next film project.

I love Amy the show, Amy the character and everybody else that's in it, the show is smart, charming and very intriguing. Amy Brenneman you are truly a beautiful woman. Tyne Daly is just perfect, adorable. Everything and everybody was great. I moved to US in 2004 and have been watching the show since them, with back-to-back I have the chance to see it all, it's my favourite daily show ever, too bad :( it's canceled while there's some very stupid stuff taking space/time on tv right now.

I never knew about this show while it aired, but recently have started watching. OH MY GOSH I AM HOOKED!!! How could this show have been canceled?? It makes me laugh..super hard and cry the same. I have learned so much through this show. I love all the characters and can relate to Amy being 42 myself. I have always loved Tyne Daly (what an actress) and Jessica Tuck I watched on OLTL and cried when she as Megan died. I will be buying the series and emailing CBS about a movie. Thank you Amy for really adding something special to my life with your show. I hope that you and your family are well.

Just watched the last episode of 'Judging Amy' on Swedish television and shed quite many tears!
This program has taught me so much about the fact that we need to fight for the rights of children to experience love and security and the hope of a fulfilling future. Locking children away in adult prisons will never make the world a safer place. Prisons are the breeding grounds of violence and hatred and I know this as I correspond with felons.

Hopefully this series will eventually receive the proper 'burial' it deserves.

    Sincerely,

    Vladd77/prisonpotpourri.com

Hello Amy, I am from the Philippines and they are running Season 6 only now here. I will surely buy the box set of Judging Amy whenit comes to my corner of the world. There is a lot of take home value in the show. I like how principled Judge Grey has always been. I was a little surprised, though, when she suddenly got pregnant. It somehow did not seem consistent with how she is as a person with clear career goals and family values. And most importantly how she seems to put rearing Lauren as a priority. Not to forget what she teaches those in her about responsibility.

Congratulations Amy on your baby son! I have just recently discovered your show on TNT and I must say I am tempted to find a place to buy the dvd but I also read today that the show has ended without a true ending???!!! I hoped to see Amy and David work out their problems as the two were so cute and I wanted to know more about what would happen to them... :( Anyway, I have sent an email to CBS and TNT asking for more airtime and more shows... Hope the show continues as it's an awesome one to let go of... :(
Good luck, I hope that you guys will try hard to get it going again!! Thanks from California

I loved this show. Unfortunately I didn't get around to watching the new episodes until the last season. But I have seen almost all of the episode replays on TNT. It would be great to have a "conclusion" episode to sum up the show. I just wanted to say that I loved this show and was very sorry to see have it end.

    Dear Amy,
I was let go from my job in May 2006. It was one of those all consuming jobs, so TV was the last thing on my list. I started watching Judging Amy and I am in love with the show. The show is an example of the enlightenment that some brilliant TV shows can bring to the American people. I am devastated that the show was cancelled. I very much hope for the two hour movie to be approved by CBS and will be voicing my opinion on CBS.com. Thank you for the joy your show has brought me.

I was all set for the new season and when it never came on I just kept hoping it was temporarily interrupted. I actually never got a chance to check the official status. I wasn't an early watcher of the show but in the last 2 seasons, I was hooked and knew every Tuesday night at 10 p.m. where I would be. I am thoroughly disappointed by the cancellation and unfinished story. A 2-hour finale would definitely be great and really is something CBS owes the fans who watched this show. Amy, Tyne and everyone -- miss you and wishing you the best. Thanks.

Cancellation of this show is a huge mistake. It remains the best show ever on TV for many reasons. I have never, ever written "fan mail" about any TV show or star. There is a huge vacuum of decent tv out there and "Judging Amy" filled it better than I have ever seen. I'm watching the reruns faithfully thanks to TIVO for the 3rd time around and enjoying them still! This show has the ingredients to success and shouldn't be allowed to die. PLEASE bring it back! Or if CBS won't do it, why not another network? Such as NBC-- it NEEDS winners! I could go on and on about the things it did right, but what's the point unless they bring it back! Please!!!!

    Hello Amy,

I attented a few classes of law school in Boston with my husband in 1979-80 (which seems like a lifetime ago)while I was a Boston based flight attendant. I am a true fan and am now home with at 13 year old watching your character going through the life experiences that I am involved with now! I am addicted and sit and watch two hours a day on TNT!!!

So sorry the show was cancelled, what a shame. Hope you and family are as well as this should have been sent a year ago but I was a working mom then.

Thanks for all your years of hard work (your mom too)and the show will be truly missed.

Hope to see you in the future.

    Dear Amy:

I was unable to watch your show when it was on CBS, due to attending Law School. Now that I am home with my children and studding for the Bar, I found your Judging Amy on TNT. Your show has become a part of my life (I really wish you would give David a chance ((smile)). I am now watching the repeats for the second time. Your program has inspired me to continue with my education. I want to work for the Court system representing the Children of Orange County. Where do I write requesting CBS to do a final Episode.

I think that there should be a show that sews up all the loose ends and give Judging Amy a send off that all us fans need, There are alot of people that are into Judging Amy on TNT and to have it just drop off and start at the beginning again here in a few weeks would really be upseting. I hope there is something in the works for this somewhere somehow. Thank you, the show is a wonderful show, I am saddened that is was cancelled, with all the other shows they have out there, why this one? I dont get it.
I just came upon this area of the TV.com website & am thrilled. I loved the show & was very disappointed when it was cancelled, especially with not real FINAL EPISODE. It was just gone.
I enjoy watching the show on TNT during the day when I can. It is on for 2 shows back to back M-F. So many shows I get to see that I missed.
I would love it if there was a two-hour movie to end the show... It has been so long now I wonder if that would ever happen.
I really loved the show. It always moved me and left me thinking and sometimes crying.
Thank you.
Hello from Austria

I am a great fan of the show - and usually I hate American series. It's not too corny and things don't always work out brilliantly, so it's more realistic than a lot of stuff on TV.

If it comes out on dvd then I will definitely get it - it will be nice to hear it in the original language (it's dubbed here)
First to Amy Brenneman, congratulations on the arrival of your son, Bodhi Russell. All of your fans are happy for you!
Now, I just wanted to thank Amy Brenneman and all the team involved in "Judging Amy". The Producers, the Writers, and indeed all of the Actors! This has been one of the few television series that I have thoroughly enjoyed in such a long time. I'm hard to please anymore about the kind of TV shows that I get interested in. I like something with heart, real human interest stories, that have some real meaning behind them. "Judging Amy", was just the kind of show that I can really get into. It had a great ensemble cast, who potrayed characters not bigger than life, but true to life. That is what appealed to me, seeing people striving hard to live a life, but also to find some meaning and worth to that life along the way, not to mention the obstacles and challenges these characters dealt with.
I think it was so bold and commendable that Amy Brenneman chose to base a television series on the experiences of her mother who was a Juvenile Court Judge. In order to do that, she must have had such respect and admiration for her mother's career, and the path it took her on. The series showed the warts of Judge Amy Gray, as well as her triumphs. The rest of the "Gray" family were just as real, and interesting. Great writing was showcased in this series. Another thing I appreciated, was the sutlety potrayed in each weekly show. It was never over the top, or melodramatic. It was perfect!
Each member of the Gray family, was developed finely, so that we came to know these characters in depth. We cried for them, we cheered for them and we grieved or them, as they struggled with their lives. The same can be said of all the other characters, such as Bruce and Donna. We came to know them all, and now we surely miss the on-going story of such a fine cast of characters. My favorite character is Maxine, played like a Stadivarius violin, by Tyne Daly. I don't think you could find a better actress anywhere, or at any time than Tyne Daly. You always knew that when Maxine was on the case, the ball wasn't going to get dropped! If only there were an abundance of social workers with the zeal, and commitment of Maxine Gray. I must say that I loved all the characters. The show just wouldn't have been complete if anyone was missing. We surely missed "Vincent", when he was gone for awhile, but Kyle was just as intriguing. Richard T. Jones played Bruce Van Exel superbly. I just kept hoping that eventually "Amy" and "Bruce" would realize that nobody would ever be as well suited for each other, as these two brillant and loyal, and committed people. The last scene, when Amy is testifying before the Senate committee and Bruce shows up, well what a wonderful idea that was. Judge Amy Gray could have had no greater friend, and collegue than Bruce Van Exel. I just hate the show had to end, before their story was completed. My favorite season was the the last one. It was so realistic that Maxine, after a life devoted to the welfare of children, was exhausted, both mentally and physically. So well done! I am all for the 2 hour TV movie, to tie up all the loose ends and give such a marvelous series a proper finale! Every time I get a show I so enjoy, well it gets cancelled. Everyone wants action, suspense, murder, gore, and mindless comedy these days! Seems like those of us who really enjoy real human drama are a breed fast dying out. I can't wait until I can purchase the whole series on DVD. Right now, I'm watching the reruns on TNT, and I'm catching some episodes that I missed. Small comfort, but it will have to do! Thanks for a great run, and please don't give up on the movie idea!
I just got hooked on the show on TNT and have watched about two seasons. I love the show! It sucks that it got cancelled. There are only 2 CBS shows I have ever loved, Judging Amy and Joan of Arcadia, so of course they have to go and cancel both of them and lose my viewership forever.

I didn't see this letter till today (3/20/06) but I still want to let you know that I do miss Judging Amy even it's been more than 10 months after the show's last episode. I wrote to CBS at CBS.com before the show was cancelled & I wrote again after watching 2 episodes of 'close to home' to express my disappointment about life without Judging Amy... Hope everything is going well with you and all the casts in the show. I saw some of them on tv here and there but it's just not the same as the Gray family & their friends that touched me deeply...

I just started watching Judging Amy a few months ago. TNT shows two-a-day in high-definition. I record both episodes and watch them after work. My wife and 10 year old son have also become addicted. While I have to admit that I am disappointed to hear that the days of my new evening ritual are numbered, I feel fortunate in knowing that there are 27 episodes that I have not seen (according to http://judgingamy.tvfans.org/amy/episode_guide.htm). Season 5 "Sins of the Father" (13) and "Roadhouse Blues" (14) are showing today.

It is interesting to watch the parallels that are often drawn between situations the are occurring in Amy's home life and the cases that she presides over in juvenile court. Anyway, I think the show is great and wish CBS had a little more foresight and consideration for the vast array of fans.
so i finally find a place to express my thoughts about the best show that has ever been on television....the wonderful Judging Amy. I first heard about this show when it began back in 1999 from my mother (60 years old). She wasn't a huge television watcher but she did see the first Judging Amy and got hooked. She would ask me quite frequently if I had seen Judging Amy. I would always respond with "no" and she would always say "I wish you would. It's a great show." and then she would proceed to tell me a little about it. Well, December 19, 1999 my mother died very suddenly and it was a shock to the whole family. Like Maxine, she was the matriarch of the whole family. It wasn't until maybe mid January of 2000 that I was flipping thru the channels and landed on Judging Amy. I watched it knowing it was Mom's favorite show. When it ended I was crying. I could see why she loved it so much and I hated like anything that I had not seen it while she was still here so that we could talk about it. I continued to watch it every week without fail and was astounded every week at the quality of the show, how great the actors and actresses were and the music was awesome. I was even more pleased that one of my favorite actresses was on it. The actress who plays Jillian used to be on my soap. She had lupus on One Life To Live and her acting amazed me--especially her dying scene. And Vincent and Bruce--what hotties!!! But what really got to me was the amazing storylines and wonderful acting. I would always look for a Judging Amy soundtrack. Providence had one and other shows have them so I knew JA must have one since they have such great music on there. I never found one. If you haven't made one then could you please???!!!! Really, the music ya'll picked out was wonderful. Every song I loved. It was always fitting to the scene but was a great song by itself. I hate like anything that this show was canceled. I watch the reruns on tnt every chance I get to get my Judging Amy fix. People have told me to start watching The Closer, that if i liked Judging Amy then I would like The Closer. I haven't yet because I am still in mourning over JA--but maybe I will one day. Anyway, Amy, I can't thank you enough for creating the show and you better believe I will be purchasing the DVD and hopefully the soundtrack asap.
