Battlestar: DVD notes, Kevin Smith to direct episode

While the rest of the world finally came to its senses and is only now frantically watching Sci-Fi Channel's smash Battlestar Galactica on DVD, fans who have been in for the long haul are eagerly waiting details on season four. Finally, this weekend brought nuggets of BSG info from two sources--one official and one unlikely.

The latter is writer-slash-director-slash-actor Kevin Smith, of Clerks and Chasing Amy fame and Clerks 2 and Jersey Girl infamy. In an interview with AOL, Smith talks about his upcoming projects, and among them are directorial duties on a future episode of BSG.

"I know that I'm going to go up and direct an episode of Battlestar Galactica, which I'm kind of stoked about," the Comic-Con hero said. "It's cool, but it is scary because it is like, 'What the f***? I can't bring anything to that show.' That show is genius, and they have a very distinctive visual style."

Smith, known mostly for movies with witty rapid-fire dialogue riddled with pop culture references and some potty humor, will have a challenge ahead of himself as he tackles BSG's stern drama of human survival--but he should have some more experience by then.

The director was behind the camera of CW's Reaper pilot, a comedy about a boy tasked with bounty hunting for Satan. Smith is also in line to write and direct the first episode of Heroes: Origins, a stand-alone spin-off of NBC's popular Heroes. As of press time, reps for Battlestar Galactica were unable to confirm that Smith was going to direct an episode of the show.

With season four getting ready for takeoff in November, fans are also expecting a release date for the season three DVD any day now. Well today, Universal Studios Home Entertainment finally released a new BSG DVD release date--except it's for season four content, not three.

Universal will release the season four two-hour premiere, Razor, on DVD and HD-DVD on December 4, just 10 days after it debuts on the Sci-Fi Channel. The DVD, dubbed Battlestar Galactica: Razor Unrated Extended Edition, will retail for a suggested price of $26.98.

Included will be an extended cut of Razor, as well as deleted scenes, commentary, a talk with director of photography Stephen McNutt, a short with the cast members discussing their favorite Battlestar moments, and a look at season four with the show's creators, Ronald Moore and David Eick.

As for the packaging of the DVD set, it's still to be determined...by Battlestar Galactica fans. Sci-Fi is being democratic and letting the people choose what box art will be included on the final packaging. Starting today through September 7, fans can head over to the Battlestar Galactica Web site and choose from three options (Note: as of press time, the feature was not up and running on the Web site).

It can either go two ways. 1) They just want name recognition attached to an episode and he will bring nothing to the table the standard stable of directors don't already do. 2) They actually want a Smith take on BSG, which I'd imagine would result in a somewhat comic relief mid season filler episode, which while might actually be good would be out of place in the rest of the series.

Unless Kevin Smith were to write the episode, what's the big deal? I'm sure the BSG production is a well-oiled machine at this point and that he'll bring minimal artistic input. At least half the episodes of this series are better than any of his movies.

Man, if this is true, I'll be psyched. While it's not guaranteed home run, I always enjoy it when people who are obviously fans of something get the chance to contribute to its production.

Yea, Clerks 2 got generally good reviews (and even better viewer acclaim). Its MetaScore is 65. Jersey Girl's is 43.

I'm a big Smith fan, but I'm a bit worried about this pair-up. In all likelihood, we won't be able to tell it was him directing at all. Hopefully he'll do his homework, since he said on his podcast that he's never watched BSG before.

I love the idea of Smith on SF. It's like Tarantino on X-files or ER, it can lead to amazing stand-alone episodes (flog me if I'm wrong about Tarantino's guest-directing).
