BBC to announce new Dr Who tomorrow

Speculation as to who will play the next Doctor has been rife since David Tennant quit last October and today the BBC confirmed that the wait is nearly over. The identity of Tennant's replacement is to be announced tomorrow as part of a special edition of Doctor Who Confidential on BBC One.

Piers Wenger, the BBC's head of drama said: "We are so pleased to have been able to cast this person as the new Doctor. We believe the actor is going to bring something very special to the role and will make it absolutely their own."

During the Confidential special, to be aired tomorrow at 5.35pm, the actor playing the next incarnation will share their initial reactions to the news. The next doctor will replace Tennant for the fifth series in 2010.

Who do you think it could be?

Is he going to be a part of any of the three specials prior to the 2010 series or not?

Yeah, who? I just looked up Matt Smith & this should be an interesting casting call -- with the show with him in it not to be aired until 2010!

being the successor of christopher eccleston and david tennant is going to be a hell of a tough job but i'm really relieved it's most likely not going to be david morrisey ...

Well, trunksgave it wouldn't be the first time. Collen Baker had a role in Doctor Who BEFORE taking over the part (and not long before for that matter). Also, Romona inexplicably caused herself to regenerate and took the form of a character she met in the previous story. It CAN be done. Further, we must remember very few, if any, actors have hit the ground running in the role of the Doctor and it takes a couple of episodes (some more, some just one) to really work into the role. Some, sadly, never do.

Whoever it is I hope it's Moffat and Wenger's final say and not somebody higher up making the call.

I think revealing it now, as well as saying that there would be a regeneration at the end of the specials, was a good decision, due to the bare inevitability that the press would find out. I don't think it'll overshadow these last few times we see David Tennant's portrayal.

Nervously anticipating the announcement. Just hoping it's not Paterson Joseph, I'd be really disappointed. He's a good actor and I like him in Survivors, but he's not the Doctor. I just hope that the replacement can repair my broken heart!

Hellfrost666 (love the name BTW). I wondered about the Master. I know in the original series the Time Lords promised him a whole new cycle for helping them find the Doctor ("The Five Doctors") wondered if they fainlly coughed up before the Time War and he ended up desserting them in the end. I also wondered if maybe as the last (for now) Time Lords if maybe now he draws on the energy they did and basically has unlimited regenerations. Sort of like now that all the other Time Lords can't use their's he inherits them naturally. Just a thought.

I can't think of anyone doing a better job than Tennant. But I want to be proven wrong. Here's hoping.

libra113, the master also got a new reincarnation after he ran out of ones. I am sure they will figure out some way to keep him on for another 12 regenerations. Maybe the doctor saves some high powered alien who resets his regeneration cycle or whatever. Anyways; Looking forward to it!

Look forward to this announcement a lot!

Shouldn't they be holding on to Doctors a bit more tightly than that? He's only got a few regenerations left and barring some kind of clever write around he's then doomed.

I'll keep my eye out on this one! After Eccleston & Tennant, I hope the next Doctor will fit the bill.
