Blade has gotten a stake through the heart.
The vampire action series, which was the first attempt at a one-hour drama for network Spike TV, will not be renewed for a second season. The show had fallen off drastically from its premiere ratings.
Blade arose from the grave over the summer with a strong 2.5 million cable viewers. Ratings died off over the show's 12-episode run up to the September 13 finale, which drew only 896,000 viewers.
Blade was a TV port of the popular Wesley Snipes action movie trilogy, which featured Snipes as a half-vampire trying to fight evil vampires attempting to take over the world. Kirk "Sticky" Jones stepped into the role for the series.
"We were happy with Blade creatively," a Spike rep told Variety. "However, we were disappointed with audience turnout."
Replacing Blade will be the John Leguizamo action series Kill Pit.

Damit! I loved watching the series, I don't think that it was crap, or that the guy playing Blade was a migit. If all you haterz actually watched the movie and really like you'de also like the series. It explained a lot of stuff you hadn't known from the movies. There are soo many people who like watching it, I don't understand why they didn't rate it and stuff. Have they finished series 2? If so they could upload it onto a website so we could carry on watching it. They could then charge people to download the episodes and stuff. That would be really cool.
I'm glad they cancelled this show. This was a mockery of the original movie "Blade". I was initially excited when I first heard about it, but after watching the premier, I was thoroughly disappointed. They made Blade weak, visibly so when fighting grunt vampires. They could have chosen a better actor to play Bald, I mean Blade. The storyline sucked as well in my opinion. The best thing most of these Hollywood writers could do is read a few hundred comic books before attempting to bring good stories to the small or silver screen. Or just hire the comic book writers to write the stories for the tv shows/movies.
This was crap from day one, to enjoy this show you need to be pissed. That way you won't realize they replaced Snipes with some pathetic fighting midget.Should have axed this stupid idea before they started work on episode 2.
This really pisses me off, how the hell do tv shows really expect the viewers to trust them now that they've canned so many shows? It makes watching new ones a gamble on wither or not the characters you learn about are coming back, which is total bull. The best thing to do now is to not watch spike at all, which I do any way because now they have nothing good on, and why bother with their new show, it will just get canned with the others. At least SyFi sticks up for their shows, I'll stick to that channel now.
for months I have been trying to find out whats going on with Blade, I assumed cause it looked like it was stilling going on IMDB.com that is was still going to have shows. But I hadn't seen any previews for it so I went looking on the net to see what happened. I loved the show, sadly it would of been so much better without blade, maybe they should think about making a show just off from this one that leaves blade out, I loved the Blade movies, but I think the actor they got for the show just was horrible. IMO
DAMNIT! I'm SOOOO TIRED OF DECENT SCI-FI SHOWS GETTING CANCELLED... QUITE SIMPLY, I'm concerned that the TV ratings are incapable of handling the niche TV Shows. It MUST be OBVIOUS to ANYONE that shows like this aren't going to be HUGE HITS like the major networks' primetime shows. However, there is a niche for shows like this, whether Spike, SciFi, and every other network commits to them or not.I seriously don't think there's ever been a time where more Sci-Fi shows are getting a chance on TV, but the ratings just can't properly meter a show's success. There's more to a show than just the numbers. We're (the geeks and Sci-Fi junkies of the world) different than your average TV junkie. We watch shows on TIVO, iTunes, and from bittorrent. If these networks made if easier for their viewers to watch the shows in a trackable manner, like by releasing shows on iTunes the SAME DAY as broadcast free-to-air releases, they might stand a chance. I don't know what the solution is, but I just can't understand how good shows like Firefly, Blade, Smith, Thief, Surface can get cancelled after one season, when there's clearly still GOOD stories left, and an audience DYING to see more. Maybe the solution is to take it online, in a subscription format, for shows that are struggling with "traditional" ratings, and LET THE VIEWERS CHOOSE THE PROGRAMMING WITH THEIR WALLETS. I GLADLY PAY FOR GOOD ENTERTAINMENT, AND IF THE OTHER FANS CAN'T DO THE SAME, THEN MAYBE THE SHOWS REALLY AREN'T WORTH PUTTING OUT THERE. If the networks can't make their money on advertising because the show isn't pulling strong "traditional" ratings, then pay-for content on the internet seems like the last choice for something that clearly still has a niche future.UGH! Maybe that's what we need! A company should buy up the niche shows with a strong grassroots/internet fanbase and sell them on the internet/itunes, and let the fans determine the fate of the show. If it was only released on iTunes with DRM, then people couldn't easily record/encode and release to bittorrent so people can watch it for free "off-grid" and screw up the ratings. I have to admit that I've downloaded shows from bittorrent when they're not otherwise available online through the network's website or iTunes. Conversely, I bought the whole Blade series (one-by-one, because they kept getting better... I should have bought the whole season as a package, but the first couple episodes weren't as strong as the rest). I just went through my purchased shows playlist, and it looks like I've bought 108 TV Shows from iTunes in the last two months. There would probably be WAY more if HBO was selling shows there. Sorry for the rambling thoughts, but this stuff has been on my mind a great deal lately, and the Blade cancellation really brought it all to the fore-front.moreless
People always blame networks about shows going off the air, but it is the viewers who determine the show, if there is not enough to justify its budget it has to be canned or else people lose money, it's that simple.
I am really shocked that Blade got cancelled. This show was awesome. Is going to be picked up by another network? Upset in Texas.
Hard to believe! I looked forward to new episodes and now we're left wondering. What's wrong with Spike, anyway??!!
I heard it but didn't believe it i'm now mad :( That sucks.
I was sorry to see this show canceled. I got into the show about mid season and thankfully was able to catch all the shows I missed during a marathon. I really liked the direction this show was going in. I felt that they took the idea from the 2nd movie and kept building it - or at least that's what we thought they were doing - the Vampires that is. A big part of the show revoled around the Vampires trying to develope a "cure" for their weaknesses such as sunlight and silver. We later find out that it's all a rouse and they're really trying to develope a deadly virus (?) for the pure bloods. This show was *going* some where and deserved a chance to try and find an audience. I don't understand why Spike didn't stand behind the show more and try to move it to different days, different times before simply canceling it. I for one am buying the DVD's when they come out.moreless
What was Spike thinking cancelling a good show like this ????????? Maybe if they gave it a better time slot instead of 10PM Wed. nights it just might have had a chance, ya think??????? But oh well if Firefly got cancelled anything can happen.
Here is the blade petition link. Please sign the petition if you want blade back on the air.http://www.comicmonsters.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=3893&start=345&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=&sid=0f8af2035a7fd30db793f686255d9b9ftype all four lines as one line with no spaces and it should take you to right posting. I think that it was a great show, but the fighting scenes were bad, I guess after seeing Wesley Snipes kicked some A** in his movies, the TV show was disappointed that way. I thought that it was a great story and the special effects were good. Hopefully another network will pick it up or it will come back.
The Show rocked! I was highly anticipating its return! Please bring blade back! The Season Finally was a cliff hanger and I've been dieing to know what will happen next.
I loved the show. Why did it have to be cancled. But i have an idea. Does anyone know what it is called when you get a lot of people to sign a document saying they want the show back. Anybody. Please tell me!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I miss the show. I love vampires so much.
:(
it was even aired or advertised in america. i didnt know about it until i went online . mybe another station will pick it up .
Well obviously the shows that you consider to be crappy are getting renewed because the rest of America thinks otherwise. But I did like Blade and its said to see it go.
I was very sad that Blade was canceled. It was the only thing I watched on TV. I know that die-hard fans of the movies didn't like the show, but I have followed Blade from the original comic book days. For me it has been an interesting evolution through the various incarnations of Blade. I enjoyed watching Blade's more human side come out. Seeing him struggle with his humanity made the character more believable.Should characters die off just because an actor is done with them? I really hope another network will pick up the show and continue where this season was left dangling. Spike used Blade as a means to an end. A way to lead up to the awards show this week. It was an advertising ploy. Too bad they forgot that along with the disposable nature of this show, they forgot that the fans are not disposable. Instead of watching CSI reruns, I will go buy the DVD's.moreless
Spike is an awful channel.
lets face it all they want viewers to see is tv that isnt worth while. just dont get it. i dont think the tv people read reviews. everyone should should boycot spike tv until they bring blade black
The acting was not all that great, but I still enjoyed the show. I thought the action was okay, but I'm really not surprised the show is getting the axe. Sometimes it's not easy to make a Theatrical release as awesome for television. It just does not always work. I did miss some of the episodes. I will rent the series when it comes out on DVD to see what I miss. It's a shame, because the way the show ended, once again people are left hanging. Which sucks!! Excuse the pun.
Sad to see Blade go. I thought it was definitely getting better. The only good news is that it means TNA wrestling is going to get more air time in primetime on Spike. I'm sure that will just agrivate many Blade fans even more. I'm guessing this show was pretty expensive to produce to be getting those kinds of numbers. That's number two for Onyx's Sticky Jones. First Over There gets the axe now Blade. Maybe they'll let him cameo on the Shield some more this year.
I agree with Peachlee. Why is it that they only take out the good tv shows and leave the boring ones. Hopefully they won't cancel Supernatural. I'm just mad right now I guess I will never now what's going to happen with Blade. Hopefully another channel picks it up.
I must agree: "One less reason to watch Spike." It seems Spike has joined the ranks of NBC & FOX -- cancelling shows without giving them a real chance to grow. Anyone remembers how FOX dropped the ball when it came to Firefly ? They also claimed 'low ratings', yet it spawned a full length motion picture. And NBC canned a 'low ratings' show back in the '60s: anyone hear of "Star Trek?"
Well what a S***No decent TV show has continuous through 2nd season
Well, there's goes one less reason to watch Spike. Bye, bye!
Now, the CW can reign supreme with the show, Supernatural, and Spike will be just another cable station to watch reruns of CSI and the World's Wildest Police Videos...how pathetic
Maybe if they didn't order a whole season off the bat, it would have been better. The characters seemed recycled late in the season and the story started fading fast. It was a good show to start out with though. I'll watch the re-runs.
ok get the facts str8 colin mahan. the ratings went up to 2.5 million. not down. and spike tv isnt capable of airing this show because that cant handle it doing so good so they replace it with crap. KILL PIT good grief now thats worse than blade just by they name .
I agree that it's a shame, even though i watched all the episodes i do have to admit that i don't really know what to think of it, but i do know i enjoyed watching it.I can understand the ratings not being great, still those ratings are pretty bad.I think the major problem was that most people were expecting a full blown action serie, basicly like the Blade movies, but that's impossible considering it had a better actor (and fighter, as Wesley Snipes is much more skilled), and a huge budget. But in the end it's a shame, in it's own way it was good.
the show was great ! i loved it... it sucks that is will not be renewed. lately lots of great shows have been axed.. :((
I can't believe it! It was a great show and the story were great too!
What is wrong with these Tv companies, they axe the brill shows and keep the crap ones.
BRING BACK BLADE!!!!!!!!!!
The show was god, it had some pretty good stories, but some of the casting choices were awful, the demographically chosen asian guy, the hot chick was nice to see her hot breast bounce, but her acting was high school level, but what really killed the show was Kirk 'Stinky Rapper' Jones as Blade, that guy was awful, completely miscasted and very untalented.
This is just sad. I'll admit sometimes Blade didn't have the best acting, but it's something that could have been worked on and improved to the point where the second season could have been so much better.
We were left with somewhat of a cliffhanger, and now we'll never let it keep going. With all of the crap on television these days, one decent show sneaks through and manages to not get a second season. This is just a shame and a blatant wake up call to everyone in TV Land.
The day a show with Geoff Johns name on it can't get renewed for a second season... Well, that's a day I don't want to be a part of any more. Hopefully Sci-Fi will pick this up or someone along those lines (Even TNT) because what has Spike TV ever done? Sure, they show TNA and they show endless hours of UFC coverage, but I mean, honestly, what else has Spike TV ever done? Their original shows mainly suck and then they actually get a decent one and they don't pick it up for a second season! Why something like Desperate Housewives remains on the air and Blade cannot is something I will truly never understand. This was based on a comic book series. Do you know how many comic books about Blade are out there? This show had endless possibilities and if Spike TV doesn't see that, then they don't deserve my viewership any more.
This is not goodbye to Blade. It is goodbye to Spike TV. They do not know what they are doing.moreless
I thoght the show Stunk. I really had high hopes for it, but the acting was terrible. Especially that of Mr. Sticky Jones. He totally lacked the charisma of Wesley Snipes, and his portrayal of Blad was no where near as intimidating as snipes. Just looking at Sticky made it hard for me to imagine vampires shaking in their boots as the mere mention of his name.
The Writing however was great. I think with a better cast, this show would have been a huge hit.
I'm sorry, I liked the show, even if I think that the acting wasn't that great.
How sad; yet another great Sci-Fi / Imaginitive show has been cancelled.. along the same lines as Firefly, Threshold, Below, SG-1, Deadwood, and countless other amazing shows that created entire new worlds for us to marvel at.. Instead people give the ratings to 'Who wants to be a Rockstar, Supermodel, Wrestler' reality shows about ordinary people in our ordinary world doing pretty ordinary things like eating rice or answering grade 8 level questions for a million dollars..
this sucks, blade is an awesome show. this show needs to revived in another network.
I highly disagree with the below comments, i loved this show because it wasn't like the movies and i know my wednesday nights won't be the same. let's just hope Spike comes to their senses and gives it another chance.
the first episode was good. Sticky was great in "Over There" but im glad they stopped the show. it got boring after the first 2 episodes. Just making a tv show took away the 3 movies originality.
I kinda got bored of this series pretty quickly. Blade himself was just really boring. Still, it was better than Trinity.
If you're going to have a watered-down TV show of an ultra-violent gore-fest movie series, you're bound to have people turn off.
Remember Robocop: The Series? Not forgetting the second-chance, 'darker' TV movies that followed? Who ever liked any of them?!
I don't think it helped that Buffy and even Angel (despite it's numerous changes to keep on-air) already carved out this kind of vampire niche for themselves. Or the fact that there's not much you can do with Blade's character development. He's a B-lister comic book creation for a reason.
