First of all, let's give it up for Josh Holloway for turning one of the least sympathetic characters in the series into one of the most sympathetic. When this guy is given an episode, he knocks it out of the park. Sadly, his hair looks comical when combed. But really, consider Sawyer. The man everybody loved to hate, the man who hated to be loved, the guy who paid Charlie to drag Sun by the hair so he could steal all the guns . . . that guy has become a credible leader, a man comfortable in his own skin, and a leading character who truly has earned the title "hero."

I like that the show has a variety of characters who fair better on and off the island. Sawyer and Juliet are finally happy living together on the island and are more socially comfortbale than they ever were in the outside world. Then you have characters like Kate and Hurley who are probably better off in the outside world but because of their situations (all the lying) their lives aren't what they once were and they are forced to return. When the series ends, who leaves and who decides to stay is definately one of my anticipated questions.
Sawyer, like most of the Oceanic survivors, seems better outside of the rest world than in it. Maybe he's a big fish in a small pond now, but he's forced to show his humanity and less of his facade, whether he thinks he's still hiding behind it or not. Of course, he's complex enough for us to not know for sure whether Jame's still running a Sawyer con, or really being James.
