Few people cast as big shadow over geekdom in the last ten years than Joss Whedon. He's on the same list as Peter Jackson, Brian Michael Bendis, JJ Abrams, Christopher Nolan, JK Rowling, and Stephanie Meyer. But it hasn't been an unbroken string of successes for The Whedon. There have been mistakes. Mind you The Whedon has committed far fewer mistakes than have been committed AGAINST him (I'm looking at you Fox, Joel Silver, Kuzuis.) That list could run to seven hundred. Also I'm not including things that were out of his control. I think Serenity was a business mistake, it was the capper to a series more than a stand alone movie. There was no way it was going to be a runaway hit. But what else could he make given the circumstances. And while a lot of his longtime fans hold the first few episodes of Dollhouse against him for their lack of Whedon-esque humor and vitality, I'm not going to call it a mistake. It apparently did the job and he got a second season. And I'm not going to lay about exploitation aspects of Dollhouse because there's been an element of exploitation in all Whedon shows.
Here we'll list the seven biggest and why they were mistakes.
