Bones Is Back, but for How Much Longer? Do You Want a Season 11?

Bones returns to the air this week after a three-month hiatus, with 11 straight weeks of murders to solve. But will those episodes be the show's last?

Although Fox has announced several renewals for the 2015–2016 TV season, the long-running procedural's Season 11 pickup has been delayed by contract negotiations with stars Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz. (Hmmm, sound familiar?) "We have started conversations with them and we're very hopeful that Bones will return," Fox TV Group co-chairman Dana Walden told reporters at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in January. "We love the show. It's been so meaningful to the studio and nothing would make us happier than to do another year."

However, even if Bones is renewed, it seems likely that the show's days are still numbered. (Fox execs have said they are currently negotiating a one-season deal with the stars.) But at least the stars seem committed to continuing. "I feel like we still have stories to tell," Deschanel recently told TV Line. "I think everyone’s interested in continuing to tell the story. I don’t know how much longer after Season 11 it would go, but it’d be nice to explore it for at least one more year."

But while an 11th season certainly seems possible, the uncertainty surrounding the show's future made crafting the end of Season 10 difficult for executive producer Stephen Nathan. "We had planned a couple of really good cliffhangers for the end of this season to lead us into Season 11," he says. "We weren’t really able to do that because if by some chance the show did not come back, it would have been such a disappointment to the audience, who has stayed with us for so long, to just drop everything. So, we weren’t going to do that."

Instead, Nathan had to build an ending that could provide some closure but also leave the door open to continue. "We’re threading the line," he says. "Because we haven’t gotten the official word yet... we have to operate under the assumption that this could be the end of our relationship with Booth and Brennan and these people. So, it was that balancing act of having their lives continue and having their lives conclude in some way for us. We can always pick up where we left off, but it was difficult."

Still, Nathan is excited about the wide-ranging cases that Bones will tackle in the coming weeks. Although the show will touch on serious topics—the spring premiere revisits the team's emotional reaction to the death of Sweets earlier this season, and a later episode will once again explore Booth's gambling addiction—other installments involve murders in the world of miniature golf and even at the Jeffersonian gang's favorite diner.

"We're really kind of going from the sublime to the ridiculous," Nathan says. "Some episodes hopefully will be emotionally wrenching and some episodes will be pretty absurd. The entire season comes together in the last five or six episodes, where everyone’s past comes back to determine the future. We’re going to change everything up."

Indeed, perhaps the biggest storyline in the back half of the season involves Brennan's second pregnancy (marking the second time Bones has written Deschanel's real-life pregnancy into the show). "This time we see the emotional consequences of the pregnancy far more than the physical," Nathan says. "Any pregnancy forces a couple to look at their lives and see the life that they are living, that they are bringing this new person into. You realize how enormous this is—the joy, yes, but also the responsibility, the fear, and the desire to protect this child. This second child puts everything under a microscope, and consequently Booth and Brennan are forced to look at who they are and how their life is now to be lived."

But even those characters who aren't expecting a baby will be forced to do some reflecting as well. Hodgins (TJ Thyne) and Angela (Michaela Conlin) will examine their marriage, as well as possible next steps in their careers. Cam (Tamara Taylor) will have to consider putting her future on hold when Atrastoo (Pej Vahdat) decides to return to Iran to deal with his ailing brother. "The end of this season is a tremendous reexamination on the part of everyone," Nathan says. "Prior seasons, we’ve seen our group coalesce, both as individuals, as couples, and as a community. At the end of this season, we’ll see that while those bonds are strong, while one can never sever those kinds of connections, that doesn’t mean that life goes on as before. And it won’t."

So, does that mean Bones fans shouldn't expect a happy ending to the season—and possibly the series? "We can leave the show in a place that seems quite happy but is not necessarily free of tension and apprehension," Nathan says. "I think it has been our intention to do both. So, it’s not really a cliffhanger, but there is a cliff."

Bones airs Thursdays at 8pm on Fox. Do you want to see the show return for Season 11?

If you are having second thoughts about not ending the show don't it is the BEST show ever, with the best actors. BONES FOREVER!

Keep BONES going. Make it outlast DALLAS(14 seasons). I just started watching this show on Netflix 2 weeks ago. At the time of this posting, I had finished S 10 E 02. I almost hollered " NO!!!! NOT SWEETS!!!!!!" All of the characters in a sense represent the way life is. A big kerfuffle flup(not saying the OTHER word). Have it go to season 20 at least.

I was looking forward to this season of Bones. So many story lines to be resolved like Cam & Aras. Such a great couple. And what happened to Caroline's "boyfriend"? They were so funny! I was very surprised & unhappy when Sweets died. In my opinion, Aubrey is NOT a good replacement. There are not that many good shows on right now & it would certainly be a shame to lose one of the best!

You can't just cancel it. I just finished season 9, yes I am behind, but I can't afford cable so online and netflix are my best friends. Anyway it feels like Booth and Bones just got married and are starting to put their life together. How can you just end it at Season 10? I would be thankful if it'd at least lasted to season 12. That way us followers can get prepared for whats to come and it gives space for one last shabang.

PLEASE give Emily and David what they want!! Bones is one of a VERY few shows I really like. It's funny, informative and damn good tv, which is not easy to say these days. The characters are well rounded, believable and mesh very well together. The only thing I didn't like about it was the loss of Sweets, but Aubrey has fit in very well and I like his character. The writers are first rate, with nothing repeated and story lines amazing. Keep them on as long as you can, please.

This is one of my favorite shows. Its good TV. I don't ever want it to end. I love every character equally, and I especially love when they rotate interns and bring in new ones. I really look forward to it. The ONLY time Ive ever been disappointed by the writing was for the loss of a few beloved characters...that was crushing, Please continue. Please. To everyone who doesn't like it anymore, simply turn the channel. Thank you for 10 years of good solid entertainment.

Most definitely, we love Bones, I would miss Emily and David so much! This is my all time favorite show and I have grown to love all the characters. I also love the story because its not full of backstabbing, cheating, heartless characters its about love, relationships, lifes trials, faith, friendship, and hope. I watch Bones like my mother watches her soaps.

Please work this out David and Emily. I really want a season 11 and more. Brennen can't run off on a plane and leave her work & best friend and give up on Booth. The writing I agree is not as great as it used to be, but think old school Bones. The writing might come back. Please keep on!

I really love Bones, and really do hope that they have one more season. Yes I do admit the show has changed a lot over the last few seasons. But I can't believe they would end the show not knowing if Cam gets married, or if Angela and Hogens decide to move away. But must of all not letting the dedicated viewers see the birth of Bone's and Booth's second baby. And them in a good place again. I know that I don't want to see this end not knowing if they stay together.

They need to bring back the season length serial killers. Like pelant, Howard epps, gormogon and the gravedigger. These kept you in suspense each week, making it a drama about their lives aka Brennans pregnancies and booths gambling... Yawn. Bring back old bones which had a subtle story line about the characters and more about the murders and the victims instead of it being a sideline.

I used to like the show, then they totally ruined it with blatant propaganda almost every week and started having Booth doing moronic, out of character things to push their views. I'm not alone there either, three people I know, that watch/watched it, also agree. Enough. Let it end.

This is best show on TV, who wants to watch reality shows?weird scary shows? goofy sitcoms? I certainly don't. I like the drama, murder, humor and the romance. I would like to see more of B&B and Booth back in the lab.

No, the show is past its good days - and they were glorious, but now it is a shadow of its former self. What stories do they have to tell? The characters do not develop, the ideas have been re-used for 100 times. It is painful when creators of a wonderful show do not have courage(or are too greedy) to end it at its best (hallo, "Supernatural"!)...

I liked the show, but it's been down hill for a while. I didn't even care the show resumed from that long hiatus after that terrible 200th ep. I mean the pelant storyline to this new guy replacing Sweets and spouting his or the writer's political beliefs every chance he gets... I'm sorry, but nope, I think I'm done with the show. 10 seasons is a good run and I would rather they end it now or do a shorter 10-13ep 11th season if it goes that route. They've had a bunch of fillers lately, there's no reason why they can't fit all the story lines they want now than to prolong the show with more fillers.

i have been a huge fan of bones from the very beginning and i will still watch it till the last episodes last minute and cry when ends...

bones had lots of promise but since season 5 its been declining, the storylines, charachter arcs everything seems forced like tying up loose ends. if u start counting errors there are just too many to count.

But my real problem started this season. I cried when sweets died. teared up took many a tissue and balled up. but later on the sweets death arc was just too much to take on ..(yeah sweets died.. yeah they were affected, but u dont have to shove it down our throats at every other episode. Come on people move on ...

Bones immaturity about worldly know how was enduring and loveable and so so natural now its so forced and unnatural. it just looks like the writers are trying to recreate the bones in the beginning of the series.

the chemistry between booth and Brennan has fizzled out ,( they look like barbie and ken -plastic doll like , shud be together coz the creators/writers want them to be)

it pains me to tell this its high time they pulled the plug on this series. it just doesn't have its footing anymore. Go out with dignity .

I love Bones a lot. But I miss something. I'm not sure what it is, but I -think- it's a grander story arc. Temperance's pregnancy forced a relationship and force fed us a weird dynamic, in my opinion. One I'm still constantly adjusting to. But that's okay. I am adjusting. I don't mind change, and there's something to appreciate about everything if you look. And I can learn to like this family Temperance and Booth have made.

But I really, really miss a big, bad killer. Gormogan, The Grave Digger... a serial killer that continuously pops their head in and out. That disturbs the crap out of me and makes me start each episode wondering wtf is going to happen.
I'm tired of the episodes with one killer caught at the end, neat little bow on top.

Just my opinion. I'm sure many enjoy that style. But I just find it boring and I'm not invested.

maybe I'm odd but I enjoy the break from a big underlying arc like Gormogon and most recently Pelant. Why not just have someone irritating that pokes his head up for an episode or two over the season a less intense version of the chess game they played with Pelant but not end at the end of the season.

One other thing that I hate HH for doing is his decision to keep forcing a partner on Booth that he doesn't even need and that totally seems forced and unnecessary thru entire episode. I liked when it was just Booth and Bones, playful, arguing banter with Bones constantly almost (or actually) shooting Booth lol. Then we get Sweets shoved down out throats and it seemed the whole time to me that Booth was babysitting someone who had no business being in the "field". When Sweets died I was actually happy because I wanted Booth to be back to how it used to be - but noooo-oo - NOW we have to deal with Sweets lookalike tagging along w Booth like another useless accessory. Booth is so competent he almost seems bogged down with these lackeys following him like lost puppies.
HART HANSON IF YOU GET SEASON 11 PLEASE PLEASE - give the fans whom have been here from day 1 a treat and give us the exceptional writing and excitement with one final amazing serial killer story arc to TOP ALL of the amazing killers you created in Seasons 1-4!!

Booth and Bones is more of an odd ball couple than Booth and Aubry. Aubry is another FBI agent not a doctor. Aubry should be more of an equal but defers to Booth as a senior agent, It would be no different than Brennan and her interns. Right now after Booth's stint with prison he does have Aubry on a short leash until a trust and bond can develop between the two. We are starting to see that now

I want to see another season of Bones but maybe change the format a little bit . Maybe Booth can become a private contractor with the Jeffersonian in charge of security and interactions with other agencies. I would have liked to see them become a more international institution where they could travel more around the world solving murders in new surroundings. I find it hard to believe that Booth can really trust the FBI after what happened to him.

His trust is in the institution of the FBI, a group of law enforcement officers to protect the people just like the US Army but he doesn't trust the people in it. That is what we are seeing with Aubry. He is an agent but Booth doesn't quite trust him completely. I'm surprised we didn't get a scene of him in the walk-in with "the chaplin" about what's happened. If he's still tending bar anyway.

Please keep the show running. I feel that I have learned a lot from watching it and I feel that there is a lot more to learn. It is one of the best crime dramas on and I'm tired of all the great shows being taken off the air to put some of piece of junk on in its place.

I agree with elainaval, the show had great character development. I specially loved how Dr. Brennan developed and began to understand social interaction better. With that being said, I think she and all characters have developed enough to make the show less interesting. It is more about cases than the people, because, with 10 years, what else is there to tell?
The funny episodes where Brennan was clueless about how to respond to situations are gone, the chemistry of the possible relationship is gone, everyone is paired up... what else?

Before the end though, I would like to see Hutchings fortune returned to him. They have proven they can do without, so it does not hurt to have it, I would also like to see the intern who went to prison back (the one who helped the master), and maybe freed because he was not really involved or something. Other than that, I think It would be ok to see the show go, I am ready for it.

Hodgins(not Hutchings) didn't really care about the money it was a minor plot point that came up now and then. I suspect he is building a good amount of money with his side business with the ex-con intern selling some sort of sauce. I think you mean Zac Addy, he was too much like Brennan and he was never sent to prison. He was ruled incompetent to stand trial in the Gormagon murders, and sent to a mental institution. The only one that understood his line of reasoning is Dr Sweets who is now dead. He would still have to stand trial as an accessory to murder and would not be able to handle a prison term. His ability to work in the lab on cases is gone since anything he handles would be called into question. I would like to have them in a mass casualty situation that would tax the Jeffersonian's abilities to maximum like a plane crash where they have over a hundred victims not one or two. We see the Jeffersonian and Booth work the situation, Booth doing investigation, Brennan in the field trying to sort out bodies along with the Cuban anthropologist and we can have either Bray or Edison in the lab supervising reconstruction and ID's Angela initially would be doing sketches of live John Does in the hospitals for public release, then concentrating on facial reconstructions based on the skeletons. In a follow up episode we can send Angela back to her roots in Arizona for R&R and have the others dealing with the after effects of the incident.

Bones has been one of the better written shows over the last ten years because there was a real character development that occurred with the show and a vested interest and empathy for the audience. There was integrity with the development and an honest sincerity especially when moral issues were at stake with a great compass and set of values. These are the qualities that make for a great show and why this one lasted as long as it did. All good shows have to grow in a way that allows the audience to grow with it. That is the secret to success. A vested interest was had by one and all.

It also had heart, that being said "Sweets was one of the greatest character parts of the heart, and the driving force of awareness of it's importance. Sweets will be truly missed because a huge part of Bones heart goes with him. If this show ends it is with great memories of many incredible episodes, rich in characters, story lines, and passions of the heart. I for one will miss this show as there truly will never be another like it because of the actors and their passions brought to their roles and because there are not many shows today written with and from the heart.

Bravo to the all the actors and the wonderful characters they all brought to life and into our hearts and souls. Thank you for ten wonderful years and here hoping these actors have wonderful futures ahead.

David and Emily should decide. When a good show with a great cast runs this long, the primary cast should have the majority of the decision.
I will watch it for as long as they keep making the show, even if I don't love all of the writing/decisions.

ps, is Hodgins' sudden demotion to upper-middle-class just something they aren't going to discuss anymore, and not even touch on the subject of tracking down *any* of his previous wealth? I mean, yes, you can have all your riches stolen by some malevolent hacker who also murders people and stalks/tortures your friends... but they usually either spend it or keep it somewhere... when the guy was finally killed I feel like they didn't even suggest finding what he did with all the money.
