Bones: More of the Same

Here is a list of the things that have changed, since last season, about Bones:

1. Brennan (Emily Deschanel) now has bangs.
2. Sweets (John Francis Daley) now has facial hair.
3. Angela (Michaela Conlin) is now pregnant.

Here is a list of things that haven’t changed about Bones:

1. Booth (David Boreanaz) seems to like his new girlfriend, but he probably doesn’t.
2. Brennan seems to like Booth’s new girlfriend, but she probably doesn’t, either.
3. Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) still makes dumb, charming jokes.
4. Cam (Tamara Taylor) still seems sexually frustrated.
5. So does Sweets.

Last season, we learned that we’d next be seeing the Jeffersonian gang a year after they all split up so that Booth could soldiers in Afghanistan, Brennan and Daisy could do research in Maluku, Hodgins and Angela could spend some time in Paris, and Sweets could go on sabbatical. The show was all set up for a renewed, refreshed Season 6, where we might have seen the characters interact independent of each other, living their own lives, moving on from the Jeffersonian for a time. And all of that happened—in the span of about 20 minutes. Halfway through the episode, the team got back together, the URST returned, and the question of whether Bones was finally going to take a risk was answered with a resounding "Nope." All of the episode’s little pieces of flair—Daisy in her Monday underwear, Brennan getting violent, Booth in his army duds, Caroline’s (Patricia Belcher) distressed phone calls to every corner of the world—seemed more like cheap thrills rather than fun new extensions of the characters' personalities.

And so “The Mastodon in the Room” opened with several bangs, but closed with a thud. If things continue like this, we’ll be in for an even longer, even more predictable ride—but at least Hodgins and Angela will have a cute baby.

What did you think of last night’s season premiere?

Not really that fantastic, but definitely not enough to make me lose faith in the show or come off too critical like Ms. S. Lee did in this "news story".

Predictable yes, mediocre yes. However, like Booth said, I did miss them. I was happy to see everyone back, I am glad Wendell and Hodgins seemed to be cool. What I want though, is zack, he is hilarious.

Season Openers need more bang and oomph than Bones possessed in its premiere, it didn't let the audience in on much of what season 6 will offer, unlike Fringe or even Smallville. It needs to improve if it expects to take on TBBT, and hopefully will do so in the next episode or two, otherwise i will begin to worry a little. But bones' bangs are cool but sweets really needs a haircut.

Damn the season opener was great! I love how the show is. Why need it to change? How everything now is, is great.

I agree that it was the same ol same ol. Back to the status quo faster than most shows did. Also their not to subtle jokes are getting groan worth. The Mastodon in their old lab, really? C'mon. I imagine more of the same from last season. Which also saw Angela have a baby scare, and Booth had a potential love interest. I think it's time for me to drop this show from the rotation.

There sure are a lot of Bones haters here. It's a good show and I'd rather watch this then watch NCIS or CSI. Those shows bore me to tears.

It's a formulaic show. You really thought they were going to invest an entire episode or two showing the crew in their separate lives? Now *that* would have been boring! And there was some changes in Brennan's behavior toward Booth and her friends. She seemed a lot more open emotionally, showing that the sabbatical did her a world of good in breaking down those barriers. I love Bones, and I really don't care if the formula stays the same. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

It was great! One of the best premieres this year (in my book). Yay! Linchpin! I agree, it may maybe a little more of the same, but I don't think it's a bad thing. It's what makes the show great (humour, chemistry beetween the characters, dead body...). It was an introduction to the season, and to expect romance right of the bat is absurd (not after the end of last season). I even think there's a little resentment on Booth's part toward Brennan. Also I think Brennan has changed a little bit emotional wise. Can't wait to see how it will play out.

W0NK042, I'll admit I looked this up using Wikipedia but only because I couldn't find the best way to verbalize what bangs are... Wikipedia says, "a shaped cutting of the front part of the hair so that it is combed forward and hangs or curls over the forehead."

This season premiere really had an odd feel to it. Honestly, the season finale from last year was written as though Bones might not be renewed and everyone went their own separate way. Now in the season premiere we have them reunited during a crisis situation. Okay, I can see how one of them being in trouble might bring them all back together and that is cool but the circumstances under which they created this drama made Cam appear to be utterly incompetent. Let's remember that she did more than just work at the Jeffersonian. She's an established person with a reputation and they made her look like she was incapable of doing anything without Bones, Booth, Hodgkins, and Angela. The story was interesting in ways and it was a different approach for a Bones episode but... I was left disappointed at the writing. Did Bones really come close to cancellation? The season finale most definitely makes it appear so.

Disappointing They went away for 7 months and came back and started the same dance all over again. So much potential to really change some things but they didn't. The only thing I saw that might be a positive down the libne is that Booth wasn't planning on Hannah being in his life. She shows up on her own and I'll bet he's going to try to make it work because he cares for her but Bones being around will make it impossible for him to keep his true feelings hidden for long. . They really need to put more focus on the cases because they get weaker every episode. There are plot holes that my 10 year old grandson can figure out. Cam is the best pathologists but missed a lot with that kids body. The whole come home thing was handled poorly. Not in any way realistic that Booth or Brennan can just decide not to honor their obligations and come home. And how is it that Caroline has a direct line to a combat zone and Bones who told Booth she had a sat phone only for emergencies. Give us a Both and Brennan romance storyline but don't forget that the case work needs to be up to par also.

Yeah I was kinda disappointed as well. It seemed like a stupid reason for getting them all back together.
