Boston Legal returning to court

Boston Legal will be back for a fifth season, but it wasn't easy.

The legal dramedy from superproducer David E. Kelley (Ally McBeal) was given another season by ABC, but its future had to do with the promise of another show and not its own, according to Variety.

Kelley owns the rights to the show Life on Mars, which ABC dearly wants to see in its lineup. The producer stood his ground and allegedly told ABC that if it wants Mars, it's going to have to green-light another season of Boston Legal. That's what we call hardball, folks.

Under the terms of the agreement, Kelley will stick with Boston Legal, depart Mars, and hand over the reigns to Mars to ABC. The network is expected to install producers from October Road to handle show-running duties on Life on Mars.

Boston Legal was not considered a lock for renewal this season. It carries only a small but loyal and upper-class audience.

Life on Mars is another adaptation of a British drama series, and follows a detective who is somehow transported back to the 1970s. ABC is expected to pick up the series for a full season.

I am so happy to hear that Boston Legal is returning for a fifth season. especially after knowing a few of my favorate shows are not on anymore (The Dead Zone and The 4400). But I don't remember where I heard it, but I heard that Boston Legal is only coming back with like 16 episodes for its fifth and final season. I hope its not so, both for only 16 episodes and it being its final season. Has anyone else heard this?

It's wrong to say that only small upper-class audience watches it. Even in India this is a hit show and I know so many friends who enjoy watching this show.

I'm thrilled to know BL will be back for a 5th season. I feel cheated because the boxed set of this season is going to be shorted by several episodes, thanks to the writers' strike. They have made a mistake with their camera angles and I find them disturbing. I don't want to think of Alan Shore as a small man and I totally don't want to think of Denny Crane as a small man, but when then are shot in scenes with John Laroquette, they both look like little old men.
Shoot them from lower angles and let me pretend.

Speaking of pretending, I am painfully aware that every single person on that show, bar Clarence most of the time, is wearing a wig. Make Alan's longer and sexier, and make them all better quality. .... Denny's looks good. the other men have obvious lines and the women look like they are just plunked on their heads.

Lock and load.

I dunno why BL is only popular with higher class but over here in the UK, while some of the political stuff goes over head the rest remains a sound and very funny show, given that they got us hook line and sinker with the end of the last ep, i have never laughed so hard when you find that ***** has the last laugh, so unexpected.

Keep them coming as life on mars is only good for 2 seasons, but knowing the american networks they will drag it out for 3 or 4 like the office.

This show is just too great to let go. Will of the D and I have debated this one to death, however, I knew Boston Legal would be fine, I had a gut feeling I'd be seeing more Denny Crane next year, even though Boston Legal is the best example of a Liberal Political Soap box in the history of television. At least they make fun of themselves.

another example of a network teeering on an awesome show that should without question be renewed...of course at least Boston Legal has had some ample screen time, not the same i can say for other shows that didnt even make it out of the gate for their first season (ahem NBC Studio 60).

I'm sorry for David Kelly having to give up Life on Mars. But at least he got to keep BL. I loved the BBC version of Life on Mars. I have a feeling that ABC is going to Disneyfy it. And that will be a tragedy.

I gotta say I was a little worried about BL's future, with it being labeled a "bubble" show and all. I'm glad David fought for BL & WON!! ...DENNY CRANE!

I bet Boston Legal gets better ratings than Life On Mars. I've seen the BBC drama Life On Mars - it is dull and will quickly die here in America.

Life on Mars seems intersting. I'm glad Boston Legal will be back for a 5th season but I disagree that the show doesn't do well in the ratings. I'm glad DEK still knows how to play hardball.

Looking forward to Life On Mars... too bad Kelley won't be at the helm... it almost seems to edgy for the October Road folks, but we'll have to wait and see!

Good news for David E although I could really not care less about Boston Legal. I loved Life on Mars, but am not sure if a remake needs to be made so quickly since the BBC verion only ran from 2006-2007. Hard to imagine it is out of anyone's mind yet!

Boston Legal is one of the top 5 tv shows being produced in the US. How could they even waiver on it? ABC is moronic for not signing a multi-year deal for the show!
