Breaking Bad Has a Season 5 Premiere Date

Breaking Bad! Breaking Bad! Breaking Bad! I literally wrote three introductions for this story before settling on that, because it's the only one that truly captures how I feel about AMC's excellent series. All year long we've been waiting for AMC to announce an official premiere date for Breaking Bad's fifth season, and today we finally got it.

Season 5 will debut on July 15 at 10pm. That's less than two months away, guys! The network also confirmed the show's worst-kept secret: Season 5 will be eight episodes long. Breaking Bad has 16 episodes to call it a series, and they'll be split into two eight-episode seasons. The final eight episodes will air in the summer of 2013.

AMC also made two non-Walter-White-related announcements:

1. The network's newest unscripted series Small Town Security, a docudrama about a small, family-owned private security firm in Georgia, will follow Breaking Bad at 11pm for those who are into the "AMC has reality TV" thing.

2. Hell on Wheels, the Western starring Anson Mount will return for Season 2 on August 12 at 9pm. Season 1 debuted in November, so this is a big move up the calendar for the show as AMC continues its push toward year-round original programming.

July 15th! Party at Jesse Pinkman's house!

I actually think this is OK.

Yes, BB has a slow burning pace to it but everything's coming to a head now and I think that 16 episodes should tie it off nice and naturally- unlike LOST which dragged on and almost rebooted itself before it finally ended (don't get me wrong- I LOVED LOST)

Having it over 2, 8 part seasons ain't too bad- here in the UK we get 3-8 episodes on good Drama series like Luther, Red Riding, Downton Abbey. As long as the content is saturated in quality, it's cool- just keeps Breaking Bad alive that little longer in my humble opinion :)

God DAAAMN that's great news!! Why must they do the 8 episode thing man!? I don't like that at all...but 8 x 2 BB is better than 0 BB I guess. Best...show...ever!! Cannot wait for July!

Tim your opening was the exact same thing I was thinking when I heard the announcement yesterday!

Awesome about the return dates -- t'will make summer all the more bearable with so many shows wrapping up (until later or for good). The final not being aired until summer of next year is NOT good news... although I suppose next year I'll feel differently.

Best show on TV is back soon! YAY!

I'm only disappointed that the final 8 episodes will air NEXT summer instead of this winter (like I really hoped they would)

Since they're jerking us around - why not 4 episodes each over 4 seasons or maybe 2 episodes over 8 seasons. wtf is a "season"?

I'd say a season is whatever the network wants it to be..but in terms of definition I'd go with a run of episodes that tells a story-arc =p

Sorry, but a "season" that ends with a man on the can, isn't.

ugh!!! i reallllly wished they had condensed the 16 episodes into one giant, huge, orgasmic, delectable, epic ending for the series.... :( but oh well, I'm sure it will be good no matter what with the writers that BB has!

Yes I love this show all I ask is that you dont make up some BS ending. Walt better not be in purgatory or something like that.

It's awfully nice of AMC to schedule Breaking Bad during the summer. That way the rest of the shows on television can pretend that they have any chance at all of laying claim to the title of "Best Show On TV".

Summer 2013 then... Shame though. I had hopes that they might pick it up some time in spring. It will be very, very hard to wait 10 months with potential cliffhangers. I understand why they split it but showing the last 8 episodes 1 whole year later is really just about milking the cow. Not cool, AMC. Not cool...

But how can you hate AMC. As soon as BB starts I'll be in full fanboy mode and it'll all be forgotten. Until then I will count the weeks.

"You clearly don't know who you're talking to, so let me clue you in: I am not in danger, Skyler. I am the danger. A guy opens his door and gets shot, and you think that of me? No! I am the one who knocks!"

Oh, Heisenberg, how I've missed you!

A whole YEAR to wait for the second half?? ACK! Just got a bunch of my friends into it so hopefully they'll have caught up so we can all have a BB finale night next year :)

(Even though the UK is LAME and doesn't pick up the best shows the US has to offer...)

So excited! In fact I am so happy that I am not even angry that the second half will start summer 2013 and not Winter or Spring like I had originally believed. I think my mind knew this news was coming out cause I started rewatching the series yesterday to prepare myself for season 5. Best show ever!

AMC should buy Awake to fill the void BB will leave when it's gone.

I'm annoyed about the SyFy style semi-seasons a whole year (!) apart but apart from that, YES YES YES!

If they change the second part from Summer 2013 to Spring 2013 or Winter 2012/2013, I'd be happy. End the first part in August, start the second part in January/February 2013. That would be perfect.

I can't wait for this. Such an amazing show. :D

.. I'd actually rather wait a whole year and get 16 episodes dealing with one storyline than two 8 episode miniseasons dealing with (probably) two things with a similar tone.

I'm happy :D.

I'm still not that happy about 16 episodes and two seasons of 8 episodes. I'm scared it will feel rushed...and BB always had a slow pace. I have all the confidence in the world for BB writers but still 8 episodes for finishing the show seems not enough. They can hardly develop anything in 8 episodes =(

I think AMC is trying to kill us with this series. Though I don't blame them for breaking it up into two 8 episode parts, 16 was probably 4 too many for the schedule and 12 and 4 wouldn't make much sense. Unless THEY DID A MOVIE, 6 SEASON AND A MOVIE!

I'd rather have one final 16 episode season as opposed to 2 8 episode seasons.

First season was 8 eps. Turned out great. I am okay with it.

Actually the first season was 7 episodes. Why tv.com has a "making of" included as an episode in their episode guide is beyond me.
