Bruckheimer, CBS digging up treasure

When most people think of Jerry Bruckheimer, images of over-the-top explosions, car/jet/asteroid chase scenes, and cheesy Ben Affleck dialogue usually come to mind. However, Bruckheimer isn't just the man who brought popcorn flicks like Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, and Kangaroo Jack to theaters--"Mr. Blockbuster" also has several hits on the small screen.

The prolific producer will be trying to add to his list of television hits--which includes all the CSIs, Cold Case, and The Amazing Race--with a new project headed to CBS.

The network has "handed out a put pilot commitment" to the producer for a new drama pilot, according to Variety. It is being cocreated by Cyrus Voris and Ethan Reiff, the duo who created Showtime's smart look at terrorism and counterterrorism, the critically lauded Sleeper Cell. The untitled project will follow a group of ragtag freelance treasure hunters led by a former Navy SEAL.

The show will attempt to catch the mystique of the Indiana Jones movies, while adding real-world politics and some of the action seen in The Amazing Race. The writers' aim is to avoid the clichés of other failed projects that tried to ride the coattails of the Indiana Jones movies.

"Those shows felt like tired retreads of Raiders of the Lost Ark shot on a TV budget," Reiff said. "We'll die before we do that."
