Stop Everything: A Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot Is Coming

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, one of TV's most adored series, is getting a reboot.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Fox, the studio that produced Joss Whedon's original series, is developing a new take on Buffy which would reportedly position a black actress in the titular role. Whedon is working on the script with Monica Owusu-Breen, a black female writer, who has worked on Lost, Fringe, and Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

THR reports that the studio will pitch the series to the various streaming services and cable channels in the coming months. No casting or further production details have been announced.

The Sarah Michelle Gellar vehicle aired for seven seasons across The WB and UPN, ending its run in 2003. Beyond its TV spin-off Angel, Buffy has lived on in comic book form where the Dark Horse line of comics is still producing stories and is now up to Season 12.

Given Hollywood's proclivity for reboots and reimagining, a potential Buffy redo has been tossed around many times, most recently as March when Fox and 20th TV chairman Gary Newman called it "probably our most ripe show for a remake" before noting that it would be up to Whedon to move forward with any legitimate plans.

Whedon's longterm involvement in the project is unknown. After a break from producing entertainment, the Avengers director recently scored a series order at HBO for The Nevers, a sci-fi show about butt-kicking women in the Victorian era.

Are you into a Buffy reboot?

NO, no no no no.
There is no reason at all to remake Buffy, or any show for that matter. Original content is what's needed, not trying to cash in on shows that have ended.
Magnum P.I., Charmed, now this.....
People need to seriously boycott these shows to prevent them from continuing with this. Same thing for movies...all studios dislike taking a risk with original content and prefer trying to bet on a sure thing. The only way these things stop is if we the viewers refuse to watch.

Shame on Joss. This is a terrible idea, the original Buffy was perfection as it was.

There are plenty of other books out there for series stuff, why are we doing reboots of old shows? 99% of reboots are just atrocious. I say NO too!

What a truly dreadful idea. Why would Whedon want to destroy his legacy?
