Canceled comedy leads Canada TV award contenders

The recently canceled courtroom comedy This Is Wonderland led all nominees for the Gemini Awards, Canada's top TV honors, organizers said Tuesday.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. show captured 12 nominations in all, including best dramatic series and a best actress nomination for Cara Pifko, who played a young criminal lawyer defending a cast of quirky characters.

The four other Canadian series up for best drama at the 21st annual Geminis are Moccasin Flats; sci-fi series ReGenesis, which grabbed 10 nominations; Slings and Arrows; and Terminal City.

Other multiple Gemini nominees include CBC miniseries Prairie Giant: The Tommy Douglas Story and the CBC news investigation series The Fifth Estate, both of which earned nine nominations.

The CBC recently pulled the Prairie Giant miniseries from future broadcast after it received complaints from the family of a Canadian politician depicted in the period drama.

The contenders for best actor in a drama include Gil Bellows in Terminal City and Nicholas Campbell in Da Vinci's City Hall, another canceled CBC drama, while the best drama actress race includes Martha Henry from At the Hotel and Erin Karpluk from Godiva's, along with This Is Wonderland's Pifko.

The Geminis, which are organized by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television, will be held over four nights this year, compared to three in previous years. The final-night Gemini gala, scheduled for November 4, will take place in Vancouver and will air nationwide on Global Television.
