Carrie Underwood wins PETA poll

Carrie Underwood, winner of May's American Idol crown and new spokesperson for Hershey's chocolate, can add another title to her growing list. The 22-year-old country singer has been voted the "World's Sexiest Vegetarian" in PETA's annual online poll.

Underwood, who sported a T-shirt reading "V is for Vegetarian" on an episode of Idol, shares the honor with Coldplay front man Chris Martin. Martin and his wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, somehow made national headlines when they purchased a vegan birthday cake for their daughter, Apple, earlier this year.

Underwood is an Oklahoma native who grew up on a farm, where she preferred serenading her family's cows to eating them. She has announced several times that one of her favorite foods is vegetarian pizza, and she has often been known to rescue stray animals.

There are a growing number of celebrities who choose to be vegetarians, or even vegans, and they are often quite public in their displays of animal affection. Actress Pamela Anderson has been a vocal spokesperson for PETA, and this spring called upon her fans to boycott fried-chicken chain KFC "until the company demands that its suppliers stop crippling chickens and scalding them alive."

More than 13,000 people voted in the PETA.org poll, choosing Underwood and Martin over a host of other meat-eschewing stars, including David Duchovny, Reese Witherspoon, Prince, and Avril Lavigne. Past winners include Natalie Portman, Josh Hartnett, Alicia Silverstone, and Outkast's Andre 3000.
