Castle: A Detective in Distress

Until I saw last night’s episode of Castle, I didn’t think anything could fluster Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic). I mean, this is a woman who kept her cool while investigating the death of her own mother. But “Nikki Heat” revealed her kryptonite, and it’s... herself.

Well, not exactly. The actress who's been cast to play Beckett in the forthcoming Nikki Heat movie is really what's got Beckett reeling. Natalie Rhodes (guest star Laura Prepon) began the episode a blonde, box-office bimbo, but ended up helping Beckett and the gang solve a murder while teaching Beckett a thing or two about herself. My reaction to Prepon was kind of like Castle’s (Nathan Fillion): Initially, I just didn’t see the resemblance between her and Beckett, but I warmed to her as the episode wore on. Meanwhile, Beckett bathed in the attention and compliments from Rhodes, only to grow weary of her constant presence at the precinct, her keen powers of observation, and her mesmerizing control over Castle. It seems Beckett wants to be queen more than she thought.

Due to Beckett’s fuming jealousy, we were able to see this always-poised character in several amusing (albeit heartbreaking) states of unrest. When Natalie pointed out subtleties in Beckett’s posture, voice, and clothing, Beckett became a bumbling, awkward mess. And when Natalie confronted Beckett about her feelings for Castle, Beckett couldn’t even give a straight answer. It turns out that her feelings for Castle still linger from last season—and that eternal single-girl Beckett might even be the marrying kind. Did you see that look on her face when Castle fake-proposed to her at the start of the episode? Priceless.

And how about Ryan (Seamus Dever) proposing to Jenny (played by his real-life wife, Juliana Dever)? That was one of the sweetest, simplest scenes of the whole series. Last fall, Seamus Dever told me that things were going to start happening for Ryan, and I’m glad they did.

Anyway, back to Castle and Beckett. Things are Heat-ing up between them, though as far as we know, they’re both in other relationships. Yet—spoiler alert—this kiss is scheduled to happen sometime in the next four weeks. Will it be real? And will it mean the start of a relationship between them?

Oh, and one final, important question: Who’s going to play Jameson Rook, the character based on Castle, in the Nikki Heat movie? I nominate Matt LeBlanc or James Lafferty (in 10 years).

I totally agree....I loved the episode. You get to see that Beckett is actually human. We finally get to see a chink in her armor...and the look on her face while Castle proposes to Beckett...was just priceless. :D

I loved this episode of Castle. This show is great. I also liked how Castle turned down Natalie Rhodes's overture. However, like the article says, isn't he still in a relationship with his ex-wife(the 2nd one I think?)? So, I was confused about whether they were implying he turned her down because of his relationship or because he has feelings for Beckett...

This show is so much better when the cases are in the background , and the main story is developed , I wish every episode would be like this one , because in other episodes it's just about the case and those are getting kind of boring to be honest

This show was really starting to sink down the rabbit hole of boring predictable police procedural until last night's fantastic episode. Laura Prepon had the guest starring role of the season for an actress - she brought out the best in the shows two fantastic leads, Katic and Fillion. I have a perfect choice for someone to play Jameson Rook, ABC owes him for relgating him to a ridiclously stupid part on "Desperate Housewives"- John Barrowman, also known as "Capt. Jack Harkness", would be the best choice possible. He possesses every quality Fillion has and how awesome would it be seeing the two play off each other.

David Boreanaz should play Castle. I could totally see it happening. Otherwise they should get a movie star....Topher Grace!! That would be funny.

@Aprilfox, isn't the consensus that it was continuing to keep Booth and Bones apart that has killed Bones? Doesn't that FINALLY disprove the Moonlighting rule? You can't have sexual tension forever and have it be believable. Writers can't just follow these dumb rules for decades and expect to come up with quality programs. They need to learn to, ya know, write by making actual choices for their own story. If I were to make one of these arbitrary rules, it would be that if your characters don't get together after 3 seasons sexual tension ceases to be believable so you need to end the series or get a new schtick. And I'm sure there would be cases where my rule would be wrong too (though fewer I think).

need someone annoying enough or a comedian e.g. jake gylanhaal, ricky gervais or worse the hsm or twilight leads....it would sure piss castle off...
perhaps even nerdy to make castle into a jimmy olsen geeky sidekick.....especially if everyone thought the guy was perfect 4 it.

This was one of the best episodes so far! Stana and Laura had a great chemistry - hope they bring her back for more. Castle is currently my favorite show. Go Capt. Mal!

It was a great episode! I'm glad to see this show picking up steam in the ratings too. I don't want them to get involved with each other, IMO it's the kiss of death. (Bones and Booth) Remember "Moonlighting" with Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd? Tension is much more entertaining.

i have to say i too found it epic..."Give him like permission"
Beckett looked at her like like she'd gone mad.
I also like when Beckett asked "Why didn't u sleep with me? her me not me me"
lol long live castle...i like how the show blends the humour into its theme yet not overclouding it. It's well written.

I loved when Natalie Rhodes told Beckett to give Castle permission to hook up with her.
