Castle's Castle is a Huge Crybaby

And a (big) baby makes three.

Man, Castle (Nathan Fillion) is a sore loser.

I never thought I'd say this, but I was totally rooting against him as I watched Monday's episode of Castle, "Overkill." Castle has shown his jealousy before—and by before, I mean the last time Beckett (Stana Katic) dated that FBI Agent in Season 1. But for some reason, Detective Demming (Michael Trucco) has stuck with everyone in some way—Beckett sure has taken a liking to him, and Ryan (Seamus Dever) and Esposito (Jon Huertas) seem to enjoy working with him. I'm definitely an advocate of the Caskett (see what I did there?) relationship, but I kinda like Demming. I think he's a nice, helpful guy. But Castle doesn't, and he's not wearing it well.

"Overkill" was all about the two men competing for Beckett's affection vis-a-vis a murder investigation; each man attempted to use his own "skills" to track down the killer and close the case. Demming, a robbery cop, pursued the thievery portion of the case, while Castle chose to look into the mysterious message the killer left smeared on a mirror. In the end it turned out there were two killers, and both men inadvertently helped one another solve the case. But every time Demming brought in a new suspect or discovered a piece of evidence that advanced the case, Castle reacted like a spoiled child, making faces behind his back and imitating his super-suave voice.

One of the best things about Castle is the slow-but-steady maturity of the title character himself. He began the show a partying playboy, and in last night's episode, he was brasher than ever in the interrogation room. He's gained confidence and he's become a legitimate member of the crime-solving team. But in "Overkill," his signature confidence went down the tubes with respect to his relationship with Beckett. He acted like a whiny puppy, following Demming and Beckett around, spying on them kissing in the hallway, undermining Demming's authority, and competing with him for the sake of his ego, rather than for the sake of the case. It was unpleasant, annoying, and completely out of character.

I'm curious to see what next week's season finale has in store for this weird love triangle. I've read that the issue is going to be resolved, one way or the other, but now that this episode has aired I'm definitely more nervous than before. Castle better shape up—and I'm not just talking about the mystery writer.

What did you think of the episode? And what do you think will happen in next week's season finale?

Couldn't agree more. Castle in "Overkill" was totally annoying, whiny and pathetic. Beckett really deserves better, so I hope TPTB will bring Demming back in season 3.

I think, like the article said, Castle is growing. He's still learning how to deal with things like the way he feels about Beckett. And he didn't spy on the kiss; he was looking for Beckett and saw the kiss and, whether because it was uncomfrotable for him (which it clearly was) or because he wanted to give Beckett some post-kiss privacy (which her dreamy look indicated she needed) he ducked into the break room before anyone could see him in the hall. Sure, he wasn't acting like an adult, but part of Castle's charm is that he's not, you know, a total adult all the time. On the plus side, Demming has a lot more chemistry with Beckett than Mr FBI Guy from Season 1 had, so the romantic threat is real this time around.moreless

I disagree. Castle is precisely the type of immature character who needs to be hit over the head with reality to see what he really feels. He's being written this way; you snooze you lose, and your name and fame ain't gonna pull this rabbit out of a hat. He's learning his life-lesson, and quite nicely, I think. Besides, Demming is the first "competitor" in a TV romance that isn't a total dork or and completely unlikeable! I'm enjoying this ride!

castle...castle is growing up...he's not used to these ''strange'' feelings that make him..sad..angry...armless..

It was a little strange, but Castle in love. With someone who isn't bimbo eye candy or fooled by his usual act. I'm suspecting it's a new thing for him. Yes there was Kyra, but they split. Yeah. Was a little cringe worthy to watch, but forgivable. Looking forward to next week.

I used to love Richard Castle but over the past 10ish episodes he's really started to annoy me. I want to like him again but he's not making it easy. Demming on the other hand I do like and I want Beckett to be happy more than Castle so I'm all for her exploring him for a while. Even thought there isn't the same banter with Demming as she gets with Castle, he's got other qualities which far out weigh Castle's at the moment. And Castle really hasn't helped himself over the past 2/3 eps. Being a tart with Ellie, going out with Beckett's high school friend... it's not the way to win Beckett and if he can't see that then he doesn't deserve her!Right rant over... Now I can go back to being REALLY nervous about next weeks finale. :(moreless

He was whiny and pathetic. He's Castle for heaven's sake! I get that he never loses to anyone but, he didn't need to act like such a loser. IMO, the problem arises from Det. Demming's character being too lovable; you just can't hate the guy! The episode could have been better.

One of the reasons I hate the cliched use of the rival love interest. Because it inevitably makes one or both of the members of the OTP look like selfish morons. That being said, Castle's jealousy was not the worst I've seen on television. That reward would have to go to Dean from Gilmore Girls. He took jealous and possessive to a whole new level of annoying.

Lol. I think the only way he's matured is into loving only one woman. Otherwise, still a lost puppy. Sorry about that btw. I mean, come on, did you see the museum episode? He's still got the maturity of an 8 year old boy. His daughter is raising him!

Well, he didn't mean to spy on their kiss. He just kind of walked up on them while he was looking for Beckett. He never expected to see that. It was a great scene. Castle looked like he'd been sucker punched. He then turned to leave as quickly as possible because he didn't want to be spying or have the awkward conversation if they saw him. I will agree that he needs to man up and DO SOMETHING if he wants to get the girl. I've got my fingers crossed for next week.

At first I commended the writers for not making him look like an idiot which is usually the case in any show which the main characters have URST and a new love interest appears for one character. But then this episode pretty much follow through with the norm. Hope it doesn't continue much longer.
