CBS Picks Up Bad Teacher to Series, Well After the Bell

Even though the janitors JUST finished sweeping up the red plastic cups from The CW's post-Upfronts punch-bowl party, the Upfronts are NOT over! In an slightly unexpected maneuver, CBS has ordered one more pilot to series: the TV adaptation of the Cameron Diaz's 2011 zinger Bad Teacher. Joy.

Given the late decision, CBS will save this one for midseason. I'm guessing the network finally got a look at its crop of new sitcoms and panicked a bit. Plus, now that the network is expanding its Thursday comedy block to two hours, that's eight laughers on the schedule and there's nothing wrong with having a little backup. I just wish they'd picked up Super Clyde (with that ginger kid from Harry Potter as a fast-food worker/superhero) instead.

Single-camera comedy Bad Teacher stars Ari Graynor in the role Diaz portrayed, that of a divorced woman who starts teaching to find a husband. I'm still trying to figure out how this setup is actually supposed to make sense. Doesn't she know that she'll be teaching KIDS? Is she trying to marry a kid? Is she going after single dads? Does she have eyes on the gym teacher? The series also stars Ryan Hansen, David Alan Grier, Kristin Davis, and Sara Gilbert.

How does this sound to you, handsome/pretty reader?

I wonder how many episodes it gets. The movie wasn't half bad but i don't think it will translate very well to a tv show.

The fact that people hate something that didn't even air yet is sickening. The film was very funny and the tv adaptation might go either way but give the show a chance before hating it!

This is not a bad call on CBS's part, they had only 1 filler show in the chamber and there will be hiatuses and perhaps cancellations. This one has a simple premise and is obvious, that's the CBS sitcom recipe. The image provided does not help it though, it's like a bad halloween costume on that actress, not passable.

Super Clyde was too high-concept, he's poor then he's rich then he wants to be a superhero with no abilities, the laughs just write themselves? I woulda watched, but I doubt few others would have joined us, Tim.

I love Ari Graynor but this seems much more like an FX(X?) show than a CBS show.
Reply

Just because Anger Management is on FX doesn't mean all shows similar to films fit for FX. Let's not forget Nip/Tuck and American Horror Story were/are also on FX

So CBS couldn't keep Cold Case, CSI NY and Vegas but they found room for this? Brilliant where do I sign up to be a programming director?
Reply

Are you dumb? Cold case was cancelled WAY BEFORE this show was even written. So what are you talking about?

In their defense, a sitcom is typically cheaper to put together than a complex crime drama.

Cheaper sets, no real "on location" stuff needed, simpler stories, fewer characters, less studio time to shoot, etc. And if it flops, the investment into it wasn't that huge. Even with a big name on the marquee, a sitcom tends to be cheaper.

I'm not saying I agree: I am really going to miss Vegas and I thought Cold Case was solid. I'm just saying, it makes *some* sense.

Trying something quick-and-cheap instead of difficult and more expensive... risk vs reward.

I so wanted Super-Clyde instead. That's one of the bigger bummers of 2013 up-fronts...

I will watch this if Anna Torv plays her sister. It looks like Anna hasn't gotten any work after Fringe ended, so maybe the producers of Bad Teacher could make my wish come true.
Reply
Flag
Wow, make it all about Anna Torv. Who cares about ari graynor! I mean Anna already had her damn show but heaven forbid that somebody other than Anna finds success. You anna fans are soooo pathetic.

Serious meh is what I'm feeling. I assume it will be just as terrible as 2 Broke Girls and Two and a Half Men.

Another sitcom that will be canceled after 13 episodes

I liked the movie more than I thought I would. Not enough to see it in the theater, enough to sit my lazy ass at home and watch it on cable, but I was pleasantly surprised. That being said, I will have to wait and see in the fall about whether I am going to commit any time to watch it.

And I won't be missing Super Clyde, just sounded like a 4 episode crash and burn waiting to happen

I really wanted Super Clyde too.
However, I'm pretty sure Bad Teacher will work better as a tvshow than as a movie - the possibilities for expending storylines and making the characters more interesting are endless, and it can't be worse than the movie anyway.

They pick Bad Teacher over Beverly Hills Cop. Major failure here.

I disagree. Without '80's Eddie Murphy, there's nothing to BHC. Bad Teacher, however, lends itself to ongoing storylines.

I guess you're right about 80's Eddie Murphy basically gone, but to be honest, Bad Teacher just doesn't sound that great. I saw the movie and I was a little disappointed in what I got.
Thanks for your constructive disagreement, it's sometimes hard to find a differing opinion that actually stays to the point without insults. lol

CBS is the #1 network for a reason... 2 Broke Girls, How I Met You Mother (may it R.I.P.), Mike + Molly, Rules Of Engagement (may it R.I.P.), Hawaii Five-0, Blue Bloods, Golden Boy (may it R.I.P.), Vegas (may it R.I.P.), The Big Bang Theory, Undercover Boss and Elementary are/were good shows, that constantly keep this network at the top of the TV food chain.

whoa whoa, I agree with you for the most part, but where is Person Of Interest on this list? By far the best show CBS has and currently #3 behind the NCIS's.

I really wanted Super Clyde too, and the Beverly Hills Cop series. I honestly thought the second one was a given, wonder why they didn't pick it up

Well,

Tv is going to break down this Bad Teacher storyline plot,,, Meaning is by episodes broadcast as a sitcom terms on cast & crew and guest-starring...
It will suck so bad being more worst than Two and a Half Men is going...
And also become more annoying than the oringal and 2 Broke Girls & Two and a Half Men.

I prefer them doing a Bad Teacher episode with The Big Bang Theory alot better... Then taking some film story plot and adapted into a Tv Series to become annoying and nothing like oringal terms...

Because it's The Big Bang Theory everything can happen out of the universe...
- The Guys are Comic Book characters and other fictional media iconics characters
- The Ladies are Fairy Tale characters and supporting to fictional media iconics characters
- The Guys & Ladies dress-up into iconics characters for a Party events

So i don't see why not there can't be a Bad Teacher Episode to The Big Bang Theory also...
They can have Kaley Cuoco as Penny take a temporary job at Middle School or High School as Teacher for more money or something...
Or She apppear acting as teacher into one of her acting business on stage...

Anyway,
This Bad Teacher Adaptaion isn't going to beat the Oringal or Cameron Diaz at all...
Because when Cameron Diaz played the Bad Teacher... She play it by stunts involvment and great humor by play...

The Bad Teacher Adaptaion will feel like any other sitcom being on the small screen...
It will not not carry that much of great humor or any cazy stunts..
It will only feel like funny jokes by lines each episode by Cast & Crew and Guest-Starring are delivering each week or so...

OMG!!!
You need to calm down there about my comment...

It's not like i said having Kaley Cuoco as Penny, as a Bad Teacher full time thru out the whole series problem.

I said is...
It would be nice see her temporary into a one standred alone episode of The Big Bang Theory acting as Bad Teacher.

Such as:
Taking a temporary job at Middle School or High School as Teacher for more money or something...
Or She apppear acting as teacher into one of her acting business on stage...

Wow!!!
You totally missing the point of meaning, what i said into my comment all together...

And also, what i said about the Guys & Ladies Categories within the series of the show is very true indeed...
- You need to go back and watch the episode of the Guys dressing up into Star Trak costumes. And the episode of the Ladies dressing up into Disney's Princesses costumes.

- And also go back watch the episode of the whole gang dressing up as the members of the Justice League. And the episode of the whole gang dressing up into costumes at a party or halloween party.

I don't get it. Why would anyone think that this would be a good idea for a series? In fact, this isn't even a good idea for for a lukewarm series. Not even a good idea for a bad series. Considering the movie was crap crap crap crap crap crap crap, i cannot see how a series could be anything less than crappily done warmed over crappy crap dropped by crap.

Ryan Hansen and David Allen Grier? I typically don't watch CBS shows because they're pretty much the epitome of lowest common denominator, but I'll give this one a shot.

Because David Allen Grier had a huge CBS hit on his hands with DAG.

Does anyone remember the great one-season-wonder from a few years back called Stacked, I think on Fox? I still rewatch this great show that sounded so bad on paper, but was really quite excellent. Christopher Lloyd is also in it and it's very funny...

Teaching is one of the worst professions for developing relationships. There just aren't any adults to interact with other than other teachers and the occasional and usually married parent.

It's hard to get a teaching certificate nowadays (at least in Canada) unless you're serious about teaching. So it's unlikely one would just have one sitting around.

She became a teacher because when she got divorced, she suddenly had to support herself and discovered that she had no actual marketable skills, but did have a teaching certificate she'd never used. Then she went after one of the teachers who was, on paper, a perfect guy (and the not-perfect gym teacher turns out to be a better match for her.)

I didn't see the movie, and I won't be watching this. I'm not a Cameron Diaz fan so Ari Graynor might be better... but it still sounds shitty.
Reply

Here's the thing: if utilize properly, Ari Graynor would be a fantastic lead actress for a sitcom, cause the lady is GAME FOR ANYTHING - she's hot, talented, but not at all afraid to make herself look like a complete idiot for sake of comedy.

That being said, though... this is a terrible idea for a sitcom.

I am not a bit fan of comedy but I did enjoy the movie version of Bad Teacher and really liked Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel - Personally I find Jason Timberlake is a terrible actor but hey... what do I know...

The main problem with Bad Teacher is that the movie was pretty politically incorrect and how can that survive in a network show... esp. with minors involved? I suspect it could get totally lame like totally quickly...

One think I love about it is that it has Ryan Hansen who is hilarious... No idea who Ari Gaynor is but if she is funny, it could be watchable...
Reply
Flag
she was also in Celeste and Jesse Forever and a few other movies. She coproduced For a Good Time, Call. She is pretty funny, so don't worry that you don't know who she is yet, worry that they'll have to change the character too much.
Reply
Flag
I'll stay hopeful then... I think one or two eps will show quickly if this is any good...
Reply

If you've seen Fringe, Ari Graynor played Olivia's sister, Rachel Dunham, in the first two seasons. I think she's been in more shows, but probably only guest spots.
Reply
Flag
She wasn't funny in Fringe but granted that was a sad and overall terrible character anyway... Glad she disappeared ... though that was never explained (unless I missed something which is possible) and suddenly Olivia's fav niece was not even mentioned
Reply

This could be a great show actually. But they need to drop Gilbert and maybe Kristen Davis. Gilbert has never been funny in anything. And Davis if she is playing the "goody too shoes" role is too old.

love me some Ari Graynor, but I don't see how this will translate from a raunchy R-rated movie to a tv14-esque sitcom, maybe if it had been something like FX, or better yet, premium cable.

Not to be a negative Nelly, no wait I love being negative Nelly, but this show looks like it will be an steaming, stinking pile of horse droppings! Seriously who thought this was a good idea when the original movie was a dodgy cringe-fest?

Ugh, this sounds terrible, but then again, most CBS comedies are. What I find even more upsetting is that they didn't pick up Super Clyde, which I was really looking forward to and thought was a lock with such a strong cast. This post only reminded me of something I wont get to see.
