CBS Renews NCIS for Two More Seasons

Michael Weatherly may be leaving Tony DiNozzo behind after this season, but NCIS will go on forever because your mom continues to watch it every week. That's right, CBS has renewed the high-rated series for two more seasons, the network announced Monday. The long-running procedural will be back for Seasons 14 and 15 (not a typo!), and Mark Harmon will be around for both as the actor and executive producer has signed another two-year deal with the network, probably because he can do basic math.

By sticking around through Season 15, NCIS will move into the Top 10 on the list of longest-running (by number of seasons) U.S. primetime scripted series ever, leapfrogging Knots Landing, BonanzaThe Adventures of Ozzie and HarrietDallas, and Armstrong Circle Theater, which all ended at 14 seasons. It is currently the fourth-longest-running primetime scripted series on TV at the moment, behind Family Guy (14 seasons), Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (17 seasons), and The Simpsons (27 seasons).

According to CBS, NCIS is averaging 20.47 million viewers this season, which is actually an increase of 4 percent over a year ago. The show's 300th episode will air Tuesday, March 15.

Are you excited for more NCIS?

Those numbers have to skew very old, I'd imagine. Surprised that hasn't given CBS pause.

Just a consistently good show. Case after case, it provides some excitement and some humour. Oh, and occasionally, some romance. It still comes in head and shoulders above NCIS: New Orleans which is a big disappointment to me. The LA version is far superior.

yeah after watching NCIS NO for a season and a half now i still haven quite taken to it yet. i think that NCIS red idea that they had when they introduced it in NCIS LA would have been a far greater idea.

It's at times like this that I have to question whether Harmon loves his wife still?

How do we know she's a hottie? Have yet to see her do anything other than what the guys do. Maybe they could have her do some decoy work or spend some time at a survival camp for agents. Anything to get her out of those shirts and pants paired with the company logo (NCIS) baseball cap.

I'd like to see her be sent off for some advanced training, and then have her GPS app fail to direct her back to the correct location. Maybe she can go to New Orleans..and stay there. She's attractive, but that is all there is to it.

She's an outstanding actress. Aside from beauty, she knows how to communicate/act with her whole body (eyes, overall facial expressions etc.).

I like your suggestions gtbell because then she (& the show) would be hotter! Also as proof check out photos from a movie Gardener of Eden (2007) that might not be permissable to post or link here?

The median age of a broadcast television viewer is now the highest ever at 54. Twenty years ago, it was 41. NCIS has a median viewer who is 61. Problem with that demographic is that they don't like change. And so the show keeps repeating the same plots over and over. And the viewers love it. Sometimes as part of my research of everything TV i watch an episode to see if it's still so dull as watching paint dry. It is. Coincidentally i watched last week's episode because somebody alerted me Jon Cryer (plays some kind of army ? civilian ? doctor) was in it. I hated Two and Half Men but Jon Cryer was the least annoying character of the show so why not.

In the beginning of the season or maybe the end of the previous season Gibbs got shot (it wasn't the first time i believe) by some little boy and so he must have some kind of PTSD or psychological trauma. And so they keep whining about it for the whole season. The overarching serialized plots (if any) are moving slower than a herd of turtles. Maybe i would watch it more if they just added a tad more interesting overarching story that moved a little bit faster.

It also became too formulaic for me. This happens to me a lot with procedural cop shows. It starts to feel repetitive and i lose interest. Other examples of this are Criminal Minds and CSI. I loved the first seasons and then became indifferent and dropped the shows.

I'm a nice guy so i'm happy for the people that still like to watch it week after week. Two more seasons. Yay.

I think a really good move would be to bring Paul Telfer aka Damien in as an applicant. He is familiar to fans and is an examine. He has the presence to carve his own niche an d not have to take Tony's place, which no one should...

What about the original Law and Order, that was 20 seasons, so that will make NCIS the fifth highest in the list.

I thought the same thing, but on re-reading the paragraph, Kaitlin is saying it'll enter the top 10 of longest-running US scripted series, doing so by pushing the bottom 5 shows (all tied for 14 seasons) down. Law & Order is #2 tied with Gunsmoke, but as neither are on the air while The Simpsons, Family Guy, and SVU still are, which made them noteworthy.

It's an odd thing to leave out, I agree, but if she mentioned L&O she'd also have to mention the others ahead of NCIS: Gunsmoke, Lassie, The Jack Benny Show, CSI, and ER.

Wow.....2 more seasons....WHY!?! It's mindboggling that this keeps on; it has rehashed virtually every storyline at least twice.

Don't get me wrong, I'm speaking as a fan from the beginning (note the icon). But the show has gone from a must see the day it airs, to whenever I don't have something better to watch (bless the maker of the dvr). But the show should have been allowed to retire when DiNozzo leaves.

I wouldn't mind betting that if the team got out of town and onto some ship more often their ratings would improve. It worked whenever JAG went to sea. There are a lot of retired Marines and Sailors out there who love to see the hardware! Just sayin'.

Aquaflage not withstanding, you are absolutely right and I am not being sarcastic. If the show is being reasonably true to current conditions then life, both aboard a ship and in the field, looks far better than it was. Although, a super hornet launching is nice but a rack with usb ports and a tablet with wireless internet and the ability to find a quiet and private moment in a place where even the CO has precious little of either might not be exciting but it is refreshing.

I like and watch the show. Glad to see it continue.

I hope the new character is not a "probie". That has been done to death.

A seasoned agent would make more sense. I would like some like John Schnieder (Dukes of Hazzard, Smallville).

While there's been many shows that have run more than 10 seasons, it's unusual for a show that's been on so long to rate so highly. If it was going to end soon I'm sure Weatherly would have stuck around. And considering how high the ratings are for NCIS I doubt he would have any trouble getting work elsewhere, if not his own show.

The real viewership isn't old moms but old men. It's largest appeal is to middle age and older males, the sort that grew up watching war movies.

Yes! I'm excited they've been renewed for another 2 years. The show survived Ziva leaving, so it will survive Tony leaving, too, although I'm going to miss him very much.

Ziva leaving was the best thing that ever happened to NCIS. Ziva was boring. Ziva/Tony was yuck boring & unbelievable as he could do such much better. Emily Wickersham (as Ellie) invigorated NCIS with wonderful new life!

All of the characters could drop dead due to a zombie epidemic, as long as Gibbs survives, the show will go on.

In news that surprises no one...

I know the show is not what it was, but it still delivers. It will be interesting to see where it goes without DiNozzo. I'm looking forward to finding out who they bring in to replace him.

Is it necessary to replace him? I think Tony is great and woks well with others but bringing in the wromng actor to fill his shoes could spell disaster for the show over the next two years.

I love the show, but without Weatherly...We'll see...They could lose the Bishop character and add Borin (Boren?) instead now that Weatherly is leaving.
