CBS Renews Ted Danson, and By Extension, CSI

There's nothing like a safe piece of obviousness to get the day started off as normal as can be and keep the boat steady! CBS has renewed its long-running procedural CSI: Crime Scene Investigation for a millionth season, because CSI will be around long after your great-grandchildren have been enslaved by the alien lizardmen of Gorthax. This next round will actually be the fourteenth season of the drama, and expect it to find a primo slot in CBS's 2013-2014 fall schedule.

The big news here is actually that CBS has re-signed series star Ted Danson to a contract extension, and he'll be back to play CSI Night Shift Supervisor D.B. Russell for a third consecutive go-round. Danson took over as boss of the crew after Laurence Fishburne left CSI at the end of Season 11. Fellow cast members Elisabeth Shue, George Eads, Jorja Fox, Eric Szmanda, Paul Guilfoyle, and Robert David Hall will also be back.

What do you think, can D.B. Russell even carry Gil Grissom's jock strap?

I was a HUGE fan of CSI back in the day but the Warrick-killing and the Grissom-leaving plots made me stop. I didn't like when Laurence Fishburne went from a shy and touching rookie to the guy in charge in juste one episode it really bugged me. I tried the Ted Danson version but I actually think no one will ever be able to take Grissom's place. Now Willows is gone too! They really should consider moving on to something else. 14 seasons??? Seriously??!

You will never be able to truly replace William Peterson. He made "CSI" the great show it is today. Gil Grissom is by far one of the greatest television characters in history. However I think Ted Danson has done an excellent job as DB Russell and is a very worthy successor to Grissom. I am happy to hear the show will be back for another season. That in an of itself just reaffirms what a great show "CSI" is.

Nobody can ever replace Grissom so it sucks that he left the show (and didn't even have the decency to break up with Sarah properly). I think DB is trying his best to be as good as Grissom, he is more emotional and perhaps he didn't really have a 'thing'. Like Grissom is the 'bugs' guy. I don't know yet what is DB's specialty and if they had shown it, I must have missed it.

just cancel it already.
no-one can ever replace grissom. can't even get close to that.

the show was okay with fishburne but that russel guy.... it's boring. The cases are not interesting.

I only watch it because deep in my heart I hope that one day they will bring grissom back

honestly i love the show now. i miss William Peterson with a passion on the show don't get me wrong. and i enjoy the as i call him "
Larry Fishbourne as he used to go by for a number of years. he was great on the show. the Jekyll & Hyde Storyline lasted far to long though. and when Ted Danson took over for him i was in a WTF mode on why would of all people would they cast him. and i've been a Fan of "Ted Danson' since i saw "Three Men & Baby' in the theaters way back in (1987)!

anyways it took me some time but he's a perfect fit for the show now. tonights episode was one of the best they've done this season. and the ratings may not be as good as they once were. but the show for me is still at it's peak. but season 5 will always be my favorite season. and anyone expecting the show to be exactly like it was back in the early days is fooling themselves. in short i'm thrilled it's coming back. and i hope the film version comes out at some point. William Peterson has said he's up for that. i'd also love it if NY came back as well. and we are blessed that show has been on as long as it has cause it's never been
a ratings grabber let's face it but i love it as well. in fact i love all 3 of them but Vegas will always be my favorite.

Grissom and Danson's characters are NOTHING alike, but they are both suitable for the role. Danson does a good job, all told, and Grissom has been off the show long enough that it's hard to imagine him back and in the same role, with the same authority.

I agree with a lot of people. Grissom IS CSI, and cannot be replaced. That being said even from his first appearance I always found Russell was similar to Grissom and like him more than Langston. I didn't dislike Langston or those seasons, but they were not as good as when Grissom was on or even the newer ones. So glad it is coming back. And saintmark, I agree. I hope NY is back too. And I would like them to tell us in advance when it will be canceled not just have them do a 'series finale' every season because CBS won't commit. I want them to just say at the beginning 'this will be the last one' or give them a couple year contract, or at least a mid-season one like they have with CSI this year.

No-one can replace Gil ever. That being said, DB Russell got me back to watching CSI with enjoyment. I like him. He's kinda Gil-esque.

No one comes even close to Grissom I think he made the series what it was but I prefer Ted over Laurence fishburne i like the actor just not on CSI

Great news. CSI may be an old show but it's still the one of the best procedurals. And a show that's popular all over the world.
As for Russell - he isn't as good as Grissom was (I miss him!) but I like him. Laurence Fishburne's character though... Let's forget that disaster...

14th season seriously!! What are the ratings like compared to other so called duds that have been axed. Last Resort, Secret Circle just to name a couple.

Well... For CSI, 8.54 million viewers was the lowest number of the whole 13 seasons. It still averages 10+ million viewers every time for the 13th season.
For Last Resort, series high was 9.31 million, it was the pilot, and it was divided by two by the end of the season.
As for The Secret Circle, series high was also the pilot and it was 3.05 million viewers.

I'm not saying CSI is better quality tv, I really don't think it is, but rating-wise, it's a no-brainer.

I used to be a huge fan of CSI, but stopped around season... 9? maybe. I then saw the first three episodes of season 12, and while I really liked DB Russell and Ted Danson, I just couldn't get into the procedural aspect of it again.

Fishburne was great in his role of Langston. However, with him the show began to stray a bit from its proven formula, becoming too focused on his character and the storyline involving Nate Haskel. It actually became darker than usual, sort of like the Following. With Danson, the show has shifted back on track and I enjoy him in the role.

That being said, I would really like Grissom to return for at least a few episodes. Really it is because I do not like how they treated the relationship with him and Sarah with them being so far apart from one another, especially now that they have written them as having broken off their marriage because of it. They could easily have him return to take part in a case and reconcile with Sarah then write that he is teaching in LV during the day so you don't see him as the show takes place during the graveyard shift.

well good news as I enjoy the Danson version better than the previous frontrunner. Now if we could get CSI NY for another season I would be even more pleased.

You know, I was on the fence about Danson for a bit but he's grown on me. DB's got just enough quirky to fill Grissom's shoes without trying to be Grissom, which would be a no-no. I still miss Grissom like crazy and the team hasn't seemed the same without him or Catherine, but the team has this great chemistry that works well so it's easy to love them. (Well, except Sara - I've always hated her and nothing would make me happier than her just going away permanently). I'd like to see another seasonal killer (ie a serial killer they investigate and catch over a couple of episodes - like Dick and Jane or the Miniature or Paul Milander)

Great news! But would like to see the return of Grissom and Sqweegel.

It'd be great if they could get William Peterson to commit to an episode - even if it was a "visit" episode - so long as Grissom gets involved in the case. It'd be nice to see a heartfelt "You're taking good care of my team" moment between Grissom and Russell.

I'm in total agreement with you on Sqweegel. That was such an amazing episode and it left it open for another but it never arrived. I just keep waiting for it!

I thought when Ray killed Nate Haskell it would bring the Sqweegel storyline back because Ray had a secret to hide that maybe Sqweegel would find out.

But if that's what was planned it can't happen because Ray left.

I have really enjoyed D.B. Russell (and by association Ted Danson) on CSI since his implementation a couple seasons back. Is he Gil Grissom? Of course not, as not many people are, however he has done a very good job and Im glad he and CSI will be back for another go round.

I've resisted until Willow's goodbye, then I finally let CSI go.
NoDanson compares to Grissom!
I disagree with your predictions about the flowery Gorthax era: ratings are slowly dropping, I give it another couple of seasons top.

In general I've never understood the obsession with cop / lawyer / doctor shows. Why why why when there's so much more???

ALL HAIL GORTHAX!

Ted Danson has been a real breath of fresh air for CSI, the writing has been generally top notch with his character and he plays it with aplomb and real skill. If they can keep that going, I'll keep watching.

Shelly Long dead on a slab? Woody Harrelson as a strung-out Vegas strip junkie? Rhea Perlman and Kirstie Alley as lot lizards who witness a murder? George Wendt playing Norm on vacation and having just killed Vera? I'm so there!

And Cliff as a bumbling private eye who thinks he's solved the case. Work in Harry the Hat as a stage magician, and I'm fairly certain that it'll be the greatest episode of television ever.
