CBS yuks up new schedule

In conjunction with its up-front presentation in New York City, CBS sent out a press release stressing a new focus on comedy.

"We've been looking to expand our comedy lineup, and we now have the depth and development to make the move," said CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler in a statement. "Monday is already television's signature night for comedy, and we think we can make the case that CBS is the signature network for comedy overall."

CBS is doing that by opening up a new night of comedy on Wednesday nights (though if you want to get technical, it's just one hour). The New Adventures of Old Christine is returning and will be followed by newcomer Project Gary on hump day. Project Gary stars funnyman Jay Mohr (Action, Ghost Whisperer) as a recent divorcee.

Monday will remain CBS' go-to night for comedy, with The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men, and newbie Worst Week, which will temporarily replace Rules of Engagement. Worst Week is an adaptation of the British sitcom The Worst Week of My Life, and follows a newlywed as he tries to please his new in-laws.

Aside from those time slots, CBS is still awash in drama. Newcomer The Mentalist will be sandwiched between NCIS and Without a Trace, Jerry Bruckheimer's Eleventh Hour follows CSI on Thursdays, and The Ex List fits between Ghost Whisperer and Numb3rs on Fridays.

Erased from the schedule are Moonlight, Welcome to the Captain, Shark, and Kid Nation.

The following is CBS' planned 2008-2009 primetime schedule:

Monday
8:00-8:30 p.m. The Big Bang Theory

I'm glad all my faves on CBS are returning, the only one i'm sad to say is Moonlight. From what I understand Moonlight did pretty good in the ratings, especially up against it's toughest competitor Friday Night Lights on NBC. But, more Criminal Minds!! I love that show, The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Two And A Half Men, The New Adventures of Old Christine, Without A Trace, Cold Case, CSI: Miami and NY. CBS needs to cancel next Rules of Engagement and CSI, CSI has sucked this season and I don't think it'll get any better next season.

I thought they weren't even suppost to have a second season of Jericho... The fans loved it so much (I just rented the boxset of season 1 and re-watched it) CBS decided to bring it back... I dont mind if Jericho comes back, AS LONG AS THE STORY-LINES are good ... I have seen one of my favorite shows come back "one too many seasons" (making eps. "just to make eps"with bad story lines and it "killed the show").

I cant complain seeing The Unit IS coming back, but the timeslot after NCIS is PERFECT for The Unit, IMHO. Even Considering it went against "house" i found myself taping house (if i had a tape) and watching The Unit first. I just hope if this is the schedule, I can actually remember when the Unit is on now... thats whats happening with Bones on Fox it seems ... every few weeks they change time AND DAY... almost like they are trying to get people to forget about it so they can cancel it or something.

I too am disappointed about moonlighting being canceled, but I disagree that it was a better show than Ghost Whisper. I hardly what any shows on tv anymore, but I started watching on Friday night because I saw Ghost Whisper once while thumbing through endless chanals. I was hooked, moonlighting came after so I watched too. It wasn't bad. What I would like to see is more actual tv shows instead of real people shows. Because I'm sorry but they are by no means real in the first place, and I get real life twenty-four-seven. I use to turn on the tube to get away from it, now I read a book and take a bubble bath. The whole reason for direct tv, is you can be as bored with 150 channals as you can with just three. When there is really nothing to see on any of them.

I bet that The Ex List will be one of the first CBS shows cancelled next season. CBS will wish they kept Moonlight and Shark.

I only watched CBS when all the CSI's shows are on and I watched it when Jericho was on Wednesday@ 8pm and then it got moved to Tuesday's at 10pm which was a big jump and now they cancelled Moonlight on friday, That was the only show I watched on friday nights, guess they lost me as a viewer on that night. The writers go on strike and people didn't have anything new to watch so they found other things to do with their time, and when the shows came back, people got used to doing other things with their time so they didn't tune in, and the networks wonder what happend to the viewers, well it's the networks fault they lost viewers on Jericho due to the time slot when it came back, no reason for Moonlight to be dropped. It would serve them right to lose more viewers for not listening to the people, so why do we have people choice awards if the network can do whatever they want to with the shows we love. So whatever they put in it's timeslot for next season I hope it bombs.

Interesting slot for the Unit.
Christine should NOT be aired so early when younger viewers are watching.
Sucks they took off Moonlight. I liked it better than Ghost Whisperer. I wonder if CBS reads these posts, and takes a hint.

That's funny; the only show I ever watched on that whole schedule was Moonlight.

"THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE" was renewed primarily because ABC was interested in taking the show for next season; CBS, even though they don't own it, didn't want their rival to have an advantage IF the series became a success on that network.

"RULES OF ENGAGEMENT" has NOT been "cancelled",'Zmt'; it was renewed for mid-season- unless one of the new series is dropped, and it returns sooner....

What is CBS thinking? They cancel Rules of Engagement, Shark and Cane, but they keep New Adventures which is terrible. If they ever get rid of HIMYM, I will never watch CBS again

Too bad about Moonlight, definitely had the ratings to stay. Jericho didn't deliver after it returned, but I suppose cancelling it in the first place was what seriously scr-ewed it. Keep in mind CBS is the network of Pet projects, they keep that stupid show "Big Brother" on THREE times a week (this Winter/Spring, coming Summer) but dump shows with higher ratings on once a week? I guess the bosses wife being hostess is the difference...CBS has a lot of good shows, but has really stupid upper management. Fire Leslie Moonves~

I am in denial about CBS canceling Moonlight. That never should have happened, and replacing it with The Ex-List?!?!? come on BRING MOONLIGHT BACK!!!!!!

I stopped watching CBS the moment they cancelled Jericho. So i hope the fail!!!! big time :)

I can't believe CBS cancelled Moonlight! Voted Best New Drama in the People's Choice Awards, it's just absurd that CBS didn't give this refreshing show a second season. With 8 million viewers in a tough Friday timeslot, it's actually amazing Moonlight was dropped.

Crimetime Saturday is going into its fourth year. They call it Crimetime Saturday because they use those slots to show episodes of CSI, CSI: NY, CSI: Miami, Criminal Minds, NCIS, Without A Trace, and Numb3rs. Now Eleventh Hour will also have a shot at one of those slots.

The CSI's and Without A Trace I catch occassionally, so I'll continue to watch them. Survivor and The Amazing Race are gurantees for me to watch, and I will continue watching most episodes of The Unit. As far as Moonlight goes, it averaged less viewers than Jericho (series finale this year) and Close To Home 9cancelled last year with 4 million more vewers), so why wouldn't they cancel it? The CW has already said they won't pick up Moonlight, so it is dead. Shark lost 60% of its viewers this year. That drop was too much for CBS to keep it. Like them or not, but CBS makes the smart moves when it comes to programming, and that is why they've been the #1 most watched network for the last 5 years and will remain #1 this coming year.

No Jericho anywhere in site what a drag. I didn't really get into Moonlight but I heard that The CW may pick the show up.

the only gripe i have with this schedule has my 2 favorite shows still going head to head. Simpsons and amazing race. Amazing race would fit nicely tuesday at 9 but i can undersatnd cbs decesion to leave it there as sunday night is big for rating and a new show there would likely fail

Give us back Moonlight instead of another crimedrama, i'm so done with those!

Finally you have something new and extraordinary as Moonlight and you decide to throw it away, of course Numb3rs en Ghost Whisperer had better rating but those shows have been running for a while now right?

Why don't give Moonlight a chance on a different day in a different time slot?

But no, just the cancellation, out of protest i won't buy any of the DVD Boxes from The Unit, Ghost Whisperer, Numb3rs, Cold Case, Without A Trace, or The Big Bang Theory!

I think that one of these networks should reclaim Saturday nights for tv drama. I remember when The District was on Saturdays, it was great! Not everyone goes out early on Saturday nights. I like to watch an hour or two of tv before I make my way out to the bar. In AZ we wouldn't even start getting ready until 10PM...

The lack of original programming then is driving people away from their tvs! Law and Order repeats do not count!

looks like a good line up why cant networks program sat night any more?

Much disappointed in the official termination of Jericho. Monday - couldn't be happier for HIMYW -- the best comedy on TV. And I'm happy The Unit appears to be on when it isn't up against multiple strong competitors. Other than that - don't know much about all these new pilots. The one that sounds like the most with promise: Eleventh Hour w/ Bruckheimer.
