Celebrity High-Five: Bones Star T.J. Thyne's 5 Favorite TV Shows

For this latest edition of Celebrity High-Five, we welcome Bones' T.J. Thyne, who plays Dr. Jack Hodgins—a brilliant entomologist with a wry sense of humor—on the long-running Fox procedural. When T.J.'s not hard at work making TV he spends a fair amount of time watching it; after we asked him via email to name his top five shows, he easily rattled off Friday Night Lights, The Wire, The West Wing, The Sopranos, and Dexter as some of his all-time favorites. "But when Bones and The Finder, which are givens, are finished in my DVR, what do I switch to?" he wrote as if asking aloud. "Those shows look a little something like this..."

New Girl

"Have never missed an episode. Tuned into the first episode out of support for Zooey, and I have been hooked ever since. New Girl is that show that I call my family every Tuesday night howling, saying, "Did you see it?! Oh man, when Schmidt did this or that, I died!' The actors are so good that you don't feel like you are watching TV, you feel like you are out on a Saturday night with a car full of friends, and something hysterical, yet common amongst the group, takes place. That's the humor, that's the brilliance. I love it. I'm a big fan."

Parenthood

"Parenthood could quite possibly be one of my favorite television shows of all time. The cast is genius, nothing shy of genius, they are a crazy talented bunch. I swear half the time I'm watching this show more as an acting class for myself than entertainment. I crack up and bawl in some capacity every episode. The directing is amazing, the writing by Jason Katims and his team is flawless, really, flawless. It kills me that the ratings aren't higher on this show, I stress every season praying it comes back for another. Yup, that's how much I like it."

Southland

"Come on! Who isn't watching Southland? And if you aren't, WHY?! So good. This puts "cop drama” into a whole new territory. Incredible. The cast kills it every episode (and I mean that in a good way). It's like an amazing book, you watch an episode and you think...well...maybe just one more chapter. And you eat it up in one sitting. I can't watch them fast enough. So good. So so good."

Luther

"It's on the BBC. It stars Idris Elba from The Wire. I worked with Idris in a film that Jada Pinkett Smith directed, and out of support I tuned into Luther much like when I watched New Girl for Zooey, and WOAH! OH MAN! Not a lot of people have seen this. Do yourself a big favor, if you like highly entertaining, brilliantly acted shows with incredible twists and turns, tune into Luther. Jump on Netflix and watch! There are only like eight episodes, you can catch up fast. So good, ridiculously good! The acting blows me away. And every episode gets better, and better and better, if you aren't hooked by the end like I was, I would be shocked!"

The Daily Show With Jon Stewart

"I'm already at number 5?! Too hard! Hmm...what do I choose! Do I go with one of my guilty pleasure reality shows like Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares? (If you haven’t watched it, you have to, it's amazing how he turns these peoples’ lives around. Yes, he saves their restaurants, but he really changes their lives by showing them who THEY are.) Or my most favorite heart-pulling reality show with an incredible message, Undercover Boss? Check it out, you will see what I mean. OR do I make number five my summer favorite, So You Think You Can Dance? Come on, how good is that show! How do they do that with their bodies?! WOW! Hmmm...I'm going to have to go with my nighttime standby The Daily Show.  Funny, informative, playful, and fast."

What do you think of T.J.'s picks? Did any of them surprise you?

Bones airs Monday nights at 8pm on Fox.

He's the only bearable character on the show, just he has lousy taste in television. That's probably why he chose to be on bones (one of the worst shows on tv right now in my opinion). Don't get me wrong, these are all good shows, but none of them are great, for example none of them stand up to game of thrones, spartacus, breaking bad, the big bang theory, parks and recreation, etc. None of them would even be in my top 100.

Great taste. I would move New Girl to #3, though. (still an awesome show) Plus: The Wire, The Sopranos, and Dexter. I'll check out Friday Night Lights and The West Wing.

Southland: incredible.

New Girl? Yeesh. Apparently someone hasn't seen Happy Endings yet. New Girl is the RC Cola to Happy Endings' Coke - just a poor imitation which has somehow gained some fans.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks HE is better...especially considering Damon Wayans Jr was only in one episode of NG.

He seems really passionate about his TV, cool. Parenthood and Southland are wicked.

Okay, I managed to procure the first episode of Luther. It was duely brilliant and I will watch the rest. My wife - who hates almost everything - also found it brilliant. So thanks TJ for something new to watch with the Mrs...

I am with him for Southland, one of the best shows on tv and certainly the best police drama. And Luther which is all kinds of good and shows how lack luster most American tv is. But he invalidates his list with New Girl. We get it TJ she is your co stars sister and is on fox. There is nothing good about it. And the Bly reason Schmidt seems like a good character is that he is surrounded by horribly forgettable characters. On any other great show, that character would be mediocre at best.

Glad to see I am not the only person who LOVES Southland!!!

I agree with every pick except for The Daily Show, which is a dried husk of a liberal whine-fest. I was also amazed that he didn't mention Game of Thrones - come on, EVERYBODY likes GOT!!!!!

I dont like Game of Thrones. Its like porn with swords except Sparticus has a better story to coincide with its sex and swords

Must be nice to be making comments from your multi-million dollar mansion. I assume you dictate all of your posts to your personal assistant.

What is that supposed to mean? So anyone who doesn't like a liberal whine fest is a millionaire? WHat about middle classed SAHM who's husbands go out and bust ass to make enough money to put a roof over their heads, gas in the family car, food on the table, pay for medical insurance and hope that he puts enough away for his kids college education along with his retirement? Am I a millionaire? NO. But I don't like liberal whining either.

Thanks, Rebecca. Adamonfire identifies himself as a typical liberal - hypersensitive, unable to see and understand other points of views, and innately jealous of people who work for a living and are successful. And, for the record, AOF: like Rebecca, I'm not a millionaire, either - and also don't like liberal whining. But because Jon Stewart is a friend of Dennis Miller, I cut him some slack. Plus, he's a little bit funny and thought-provoking ... SOMETIMES. Which means, you and Stewart are REALLY not gonna like the results of the next election - while Rebecca and I most certainly will.

Hang on, Adam .... winter is coming!

That is known as "someone that would benefit from voting Democrat" or "needs to take classes online"

Adam, you are correct. But it's sad that most people that would benefit the most from voting Democrat never do. NWBill likes to generalize. Example- stating that the only people who benefit from voting Dem are the people who don't know what real work is about. WOW. Really? I vote Democrat and I work 40 plus hours a week-- at a REAL job. NWBill likes to run off at the mouth about things he doesn't understand.
Flag
The only people who benefit from voting Democrat are people who don't know what real work is about, who think the world revolves around themselves, and who believes morality and principles are for idiots and weaklings. As you can see, I've described - in one sentence - the President of the United States.

Winter is coming!

"New Girl" surprises me a little bit. I like Jon Stewart a lot, but the others I don't care for so much.

Luther is a really great show, and I recommend it for everyone. They are making a third season of it too so I'll be waiting for that.

I go with the first five he rattled off!! "The West Wing" is the greatest show ever (until I decide later about the possibility of "The Newsroom")!! And of course I love "The Wire", "The Sopranos" and "Dexter". For the 5 listed, "Parenthood" rocks my socks, and "New Girl" is great, too.
