Celebrity High-Five: Krysten Ritter on Her 5 Favorite TV Shows

Krysten Ritter as Chloe on Don't Trust The B---- in Apartment 23

These days, when she's not playing mean girl on ABC's Don't Trust The B---- in Apartment 23, the multi-talented Krysten Ritter can be heard delivering acoustic-folk lullabies for whimsical romantics and the unfavorably doomed. Slightly dark and utterly delicate, your new favorite singer-songwriter has arrived.

Recording under the name ex vivian (yep, in all lower-case), Ritter's new musical project is backed up by an array of subtle, electronic rhythms composed by William Burnet, who also released Ritter’s self-titled album under his own imprint, WT Records. I recently exchanged e-mails with the actress to discuss her favorite TV shows and more for this latest edition of Celebrity High-Five; here's what she had to say...

On the story behind the name ex vivian:
"I was starting another band with a friend and he was calling it The Vivian Girls. He started dating this girl that I wasn't particularly fond of and asked her to be in the band. So, I quit, and said I was going to be an Ex-Vivian Girl. It was kind of a joke at first, a joke that just stuck, and then a few years later a boy who thought I was cooler than I actually am said it was a cadaver reference. So, I thought that was perfect—girlie, but still dark."

(A preview of the album is available at WT Records)

On whether being hard and cold on Don't Trust The B---- is cathartic:
"I don't know if it's 'cathartic' but it sure is a hell of a lot of fun!!! I never thought I would enjoy playing a narcissistic monster this much. I get to do and say things I could (and would) never do or say in real life. I love my job. :) :) "

On preferring one art form over the other (acting vs. making music):
"I like it all. It's all the same thing... creative expression. Acting is my first priority but in my downtime I'm lucky to have other interests to keep me occupied."

On whether she has any pop-culture heroes:
"I can't think of a 'hero' so much but some of the things I'm inspired by and fanatical over are My So-Called Life, Romeo and Juliet, Winona Ryder in the '90s, Beetlejuice, Great Expectations, Cat Power, The Palace Brothers, Neil Young, Dirty Dancing, Grease, Tombstone, The National, Kristin Wiig, Will Ferrell, Lucille Ball, New York City and so on."

On the soundtrack to her life:
"Well I guess ex vivian would be the closest thing. Is that cheating? :) "

Read on to find out which TV shows Krysten named as her favorites, and why.

American Horror Story

"I love this show. I want to be on this show. I watched the entire season and then re-watched it to look for all the seeds that were planted. Also the acting is amazing. Jessica Lange is heaven. Also I kind of have a crush on Evan Peters."

Curb Your Enthusiasm

"Sure you spend the entire episode cringing at the ridiculous situations he gets himself into, but Larry David is so funny. Also, because the show is improvised I like to watch closely for mistakes with continuity in the edit. It's a layered experience."

Downton Abbey

"It's like crack! I binged on the series. I think I watched both seasons in two days. You just want Lady Mary and Matthew to shag already!"

Friends

"I actually love when reruns are on. I guess because I was growing up when they were such a huge hit... there is something familial about all of them. Plus the show is very funny."

Enlightened

"Laura Dern's performance on this show is epic. Totally it's right up my alley. I love that you never know if she's crazy, or if everyone else is just mean."

What do you think of Ritter's picks? Did any of them surprise you?

Don't Trust The B---- in Apartment 23 returns for Season 2 on Tuesday, October 23 at 9:30pm on ABC.

The only person I know who watched Breaking Bad and hated it was my best friend, I mean ex best friend. I'm not kidding I can't look at him the same way after he said the acting is bad, the show is slow and boring, and (worst of all) and he said this word for word "it's very predictable and cheesy, a guy gets cancer and does stupid stuff, we've seen it a thousand times before". So I asked him what stupid stuff, and he said cook meth, join a gang. When he said that, I left the room, I couldn't stand his face. Sure Breaking Bad can be not one of your favorite shows, but you just can't deny that the show is excellent. If this is a repost I'm sorry, the submit button is not working properly.

Pretty good list. Friends is the only one I watched, but I can understand the appeal of Curb, Abbey, and Dernlightened... not sure about AHS though.

I thought american horror story was okay, if I was watching it when the episodes were coming out I wouldn't have liked it, but I watched all of the episodes over the course of a few days so I didn't have to wait for everything to come to fruition for very long. The acting's great but I just found the story a little bland until right near the end. And the wife was so annoying and stupid, she reminded me a little too much of Skyler White from breaking bad. I just wish they would stop writing women as such moronic character in everything.

Yeah, her music is not my style, but whatever. She's a great actress, and her TV show choices are not bad. How can you not like "Downton Abbey"? Also, I'm probably going to go rewatch some "Friends" right now... (I grew up on that one, too)

NOOOOOOO!

HAHA! So true. But dammit it I can't stay mad at Miss Ritter. I have always liked her in the shows and movies that she is on. It is okay that she likes a sub par show.

Huh, although her music isn't my style she's a surprisingly good singer and strummer. Hopefully she doesn't quit her day job, not because she shouldn't, but because I enjoy her work on Dat Bitch too much.

As for her list, interesting variety.

She probably doesn't want to sound conceited by recommending a show in which she starred.

I know it sounds crazy but...I've heard there are people who don't. I think they're unicorns.

I really like her choices! The only one I do/did not watch is Downton Abbey, but I know it's a great show.
