Clone Wars toon hits theaters in August

When it comes to grandiose projects, there aren't many who can touch Star Wars creator George Lucas. Each Star Wars project he's put his stamp on has been met with unparalleled fervor, as evidenced by series fans camping out for weeks before a movie is released, collectibles fetching insane amounts of cash, and the Star Wars brand being plastered on just about everything.

The next Star Wars project from Lucas is the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which takes place between Episode II and Episode III. The series is a continuation of the 2003 animated series of the same name that aired on the Cartoon Network, but the new version will used enhanced 3D CGI (computer-graphic imagery) animation. The last we had heard about the show was back in May, when Lucas showed off a two-minute trailer at Star Wars Celebration V.

Today, Lucasfilm announced that Clone Wars will debut not on the small screen, but in theaters on August 15 in North America. The company did not disclose any further details on the film, including its run time.

Clone Wars will then move to the Cartoon Network in the fall, "followed by airings on TNT," whatever that means, likely encore airings the same week.

New episodes will air weekly, and Lucasfilm says it has already completed more than 30 episodes of the series.
