Cold Case chillin', Unusuals estranged

CBS has been the quietest of all the networks during the busy pre-upfront period, keeping the lid tight on its 2009-2010 plans, but word about what's going on behind The Eye is finally getting out. First to hit the street: CBS has renewed Cold Case.

Cold Case was one of CBS' bubble shows despite drawing strong audiences. However, it's being compared to fellow CBS procedurals NCIS, CSI, and The Mentalist, all of which have greater returns on similar budgets. Cold Case will return for its seventh season next fall.

But good news for Cold Case means bad news for Without a Trace. Going into this season, it was thought that CBS would be holding onto one--but not both--of the procedurals as it tries to keep costs down in this crummy economy. Without a Trace is considered a contender for midseason, however. CBS will reveal its 2009-2010 schedule on Wednesday.

ABC's The Unusuals won't be returning to television next season, tweets the show's creator, Noah Hawley.

"Friends, just heard The Unusuals will not be back for a second season. Thanks for all your amazing support," reads the Twitter message.

The Unusuals was considered a long shot to return, and with ABC's armada of new shows coming in, space needed to be made.

The Unusuals was the best new show in the spring. What a ridiculous reason for cancellation, "armada of new shows coming in." The Unusuals should be leading that armada. Instead, ABC is going to have an armada that sinks.

I LOVED LOVED LOVED this show!!! First cop show in MANY years that I have gotten hooked on. Loved all the actors, especially Amber who I've been a fan of since General Hospital. ABC you've got in wrong! This show MUST return and built the fan following it deserves and WILL GET!

Give it another chance PLEASE!!!

Between Pushing Daisies, The Middleman and The Unusuals, I don't know if I should commend ABC for unearthing quirky entertaining shows or marching on their headquarters with a torch and a pitchfork because they got re-buried so quickly.

ABC always seem to have to make room for new shows without giving viewers a chance to see the "old" shows. Boo! Hiss!

I'm sorry to see Without a Trace end. This was a nice, reliable show that could have gone on practically indefinitely. The characters were interesting, and I liked that we were getting to "know" them a bit better as people, not just as they ran the case. Too bad. Hope CBS changes its mind: after all, it's cheaper to keep going with a tried & true (and watched!) show, than to start something new (which may or may not be liked by viewers & advertisers). As for Unusuals... eh. Only two characters were worth watching (Amber Tamblyn and her character's partner, the baseball player-- forget the characters names), the rest needed to be jettisoned. Those ranged from annoying, to dumb, to not worth my time. It's departure frees up space for something better.

Ok, I would like to know what in the world is wrong with ABC. First, they tried 'Life on Mars' (which I love watching it by the way) and then cancels it. Now, they went ahead and cancels 'The Unusuals'. I think it's kind of sad to watch new shows that ended up getting canceled. :(

I was shocked (yep, I'm not yet inured to the callousness of those tv executives...) that The Unusuals got axed... WHY???? They barely gave it a chance!!!!

Well that just p's me off. I loved The Unusuals soooooo much. From the very beginning, the characters where so smart and well developed. Let me just watch the last season of LOST, then I will be done with ABC forever. Thanks for giving me some good (but short) times with Pushing Daises, Life on Mars, Eli Stone, and now The Unusuals. ABC could of been great. Guess we need more Reality Programming!

I'm relieved! This is the only concern I had going in this week with upfronts...Pushing Daisies got the boot months ago...RIP. Unfortunately, Without a Trace might not be as lucky...one of the first of the original procedurals 2000-present that could be canceled. Who knew this day would be here so quickly? It could be for the better... I wasn't too keen on The Unusuals...it looked promising when I heard the plot but the premiere was not exactly out of this world. Today was a busy day indeed.
