San Diego -- Not a Spoiler alert: V is about an alien invasion. And it doesn't take long to get there. Within seconds of seeing the lovely Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost's Juliet), all of New York City -- and other major cities -- start shaking, and large spaceships tower over us puny human beings.
V was the most anticipated of the three television pilots at tonight's preview screening, but it's hard to believe it will still be the most anticipated tomorrow. The program takes the alien invasion formula set forth by the 1980s miniseries of the same name and tweaks very little other than some pretty computer graphics. In one scene, a teen makes fun of the movie Independence Day, calling it a rip off of other alien invasion movies before it. It seems to be an inside joke by the writers admitting they're doing the same.
To make V current, the producers have made the aliens responsible for Earth's unnecessary wars, economic turmoil, and probably the influx of reality television shows (I knew it!). There is a sense of Illuminati going on, with the visitors having spent years getting themselves into positions of power, hidden among us all along.
If one tries hard enough, one can find some comparisons to Syfy's Battlestar Galactica. But the mystery of who is a human being and who is just a scaly lizard covered with human parts isn't done as well the unveiling of the Cylons. In the end, the pilot of V is an alien invasion story that we've all seen before. It's not bad, but it's not that good, either.
That being said, the crowd seemed to enjoy it. But a more plausible reason for their enthusiasm: they're really aliens trying to kill us all. You have been warned!

Anticipated by whom? Not any decent scifi fans and certainly not anyone who has seen the original mini!
To the writer of the article, it was the movie Independence Day that ripped from the original V miniseries and series with it's Mothership and arrival sequence - hence the inclusion of the joke during the part where the person is watching Independence Day on the current V pilot.
I never saw the original serries so that they're doing much of the same doesn't really bother me and everything else looks great from what I've seen in the trailers so I definitelly can't wait for this show
So, are the V aliens the ones responsible for hulu.com?
I am looking forward to the show and seeing Morena Baccarin on TV!
No Kenneth Johnson. No Sale.
"V" is gonna be good, but who cares really.. It's got Morena Baccarin, and that is all i need to know!! Oh and did i mention that it has Morena Baccarin.... She's so pretty *drools*
Reptilian shape-shifting insurgents... I think someone's been in the internet cookie jar.
I'm watching this, for sure. Loved the idea when I first heard of it, just hopefully it doesn't get canceled. *knocks on wood* Woo for Elizabeth Mitchell. :D
Wow, sounds very different.
I'm sure it will be better than the AWFUL tv series from the 80's.. but there's no way it will be better than the original miniseries!
I can't wait to see the new "V" series on ABC next year !
i can't wait for this show. I love Elizabeth Mitchell!
not a fan of remakes
I don't care what you say I think it is gonna rock!
This is by far my most anticipated new series. I hope it's good and does very well.
I am looking foward to this, I like stand alone shows (CSI's, L&O, cold case etc) but I wish there were more anthology series (Lost, Heroes etc), I never saw the original series (80's I was in school so was out @ night most nights), but this reminds me of the Roddy Piper movie "They Live"
CBourque2025: What Secret Invasion miniseries from Marvel? Was this a comic or a tv show?
I am really excited for V. It looks amazing and I can't wait especially Elizabeth Mitchell who is absolutely amazing.
looks interesting
The first V was interesting and somewhat engaging at the time. I can't see this doing well long term if it is a rehash story for story of the first version. At least Battlestar Galactic was updated somewhat. Even though this is my favorite genre I think they missed the mark and I will not be watching it.
"To make V current, the producers have made the aliens responsible for Earth's unnecessary wars, economic turmoil, ... There is a sense of Illuminati going on, with the visitors having spent years getting themselves into positions of power, hidden among us all along."This is what happened exactly in Marvel comics Secret Invasion Miniseries last fall and winter! Get out the lawyers, Marvel!
The shots in Independence Day of the large hamburger-shaped space craft hovering over cities are almost identical to the shots in the original V mini-series... hence the "joke" in the new series.
