Comic-Con 09: V is for Very Anticipated

San Diego -- Not a Spoiler alert: V is about an alien invasion. And it doesn't take long to get there. Within seconds of seeing the lovely Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost's Juliet), all of New York City -- and other major cities -- start shaking, and large spaceships tower over us puny human beings.

V was the most anticipated of the three television pilots at tonight's preview screening, but it's hard to believe it will still be the most anticipated tomorrow. The program takes the alien invasion formula set forth by the 1980s miniseries of the same name and tweaks very little other than some pretty computer graphics. In one scene, a teen makes fun of the movie Independence Day, calling it a rip off of other alien invasion movies before it. It seems to be an inside joke by the writers admitting they're doing the same.

To make V current, the producers have made the aliens responsible for Earth's unnecessary wars, economic turmoil, and probably the influx of reality television shows (I knew it!). There is a sense of Illuminati going on, with the visitors having spent years getting themselves into positions of power, hidden among us all along.

If one tries hard enough, one can find some comparisons to Syfy's Battlestar Galactica. But the mystery of who is a human being and who is just a scaly lizard covered with human parts isn't done as well the unveiling of the Cylons. In the end, the pilot of V is an alien invasion story that we've all seen before. It's not bad, but it's not that good, either.

That being said, the crowd seemed to enjoy it. But a more plausible reason for their enthusiasm: they're really aliens trying to kill us all. You have been warned!
