Community Takes the Top Prize in TV.com's Best of 2011 Poll

Before we dive headfirst into 2012, we have one last bit of 2011 business to wrap up. In December, we asked you--the handsome, intelligent, and splendid-smelling readers of TV.com--to vote on your favorite shows, actors, and characters in our Best of 2011 poll. Well, the results are in. And they show that you have really good taste in television.

The Greendale Community College Action Committee came out in full force, helping NBC's Community take the titles of Best Overall Series, Best Comedy, and Most Underrated Series. The show grabbed an impressive 27 percent of the votes in the Best Overall Series category, beating 10 other shows, including Fringe (18 percent), Game of Thrones (17 percent), The Vampire Diaries (13 percent), and Breaking Bad (10 percent). The victory caps a turbulent year for Community, which was bounced off of NBC's midseason schedule due to low ratings but created a ridiculously passionate fan base online, particularly here at TV.com.

HBO's Game of Thrones also had a great showing, winning Best New Series and Best Drama (and did you see where it ended up on our Top 100 Everything of 2011 list?). Best Sci-Fi Series went to fan-favorite Supernatural, and Family Guy continued its dominance of the Best Animated Show category.

On the people side, John Noble finally earned some recognition for his work as Dr. Walter Bishop on Fringe. Not bad, considering he was up against heavyweights Bryan Cranston, Sean Bean, and Michael C. Hall. Now if only other awards shows would follow suit and at least give Noble a nomination! Nina Dobrev of The Vampire Diaries was named Best Dramatic Actress for her dual roles on the CW show. And it appears you all have mucho respect for actresses who play multiple versions of themselves; Anna Torv of Fringe finished second. Donald Glover of Community edged out Jim Parsons of The Big Bang Theory for Best Comedic Actor, and Glee's Heather Morris topped the field in the Best Comedic Actress category.

Here are the winners for the major categories in TV.com's Best of 2011 poll:

Best Overall Series of 2011: Community
Best New Series: Game of Thrones
Best Drama Series: Game of Thrones
Best Comedy Series: Community
Best Sci-Fi or Fantasy Series: Supernatural
Best Animated Series: Family Guy
Best Crime Procedural: Castle
Most Underrated Series: Community
Favorite Guilty Pleasure: Revenge
Best Dramatic Actor: John Noble, Fringe
Best Dramatic Actress: Nina Dobrev, The Vampire Diaries
Best Comedic Actor: Donald Glover, Community
Best Comedic Actress: Heather Morris, Glee
Breakout Star: Jason O'Mara, Terra Nova

Thank you to everyone who voted! For the results in all 35 categories, including Biggest Badass and Most Underrated Series, head over to TV.com's Best of 2011 poll.

This list was ok but there was some things that should of not won/been changed. Community is a good show but I really don't think it should be considered in a category of underrated. Community with all the hype of this season and question of it being canceled made it quite overrated if anything. It is a great series so maybe if this was a prior year. However it has always averaged around 5 million since it started. I would say that one of the most underrated shows on tv would be shameless or blue mountain state. Best overall series this year I would have to go with Breaking Bad (due to a great season). As my number one. Followed by Sons of Anarchy (another great season) with 2nd runner up community. Best new series I would agree with Game of Thrones taking top spot as American horror story as a runner up, would like to see other shows added like Wilfred, Shameless, Death Valley.. etc. I do like new girl though and Person of Interest. Best drama I am fine with game of thrones followed by Breaking Bad. I was a little disappointed in this latest season of Dexter. For comedy based on this year I would go with Community followed by Wilfred and Blue Mountain State. Big bang theory latest season I did not care for, compared to season 3 which was my fav big bang theory season. Best Sci-fi I would have to go with Fringe which did not make the list, followed by supernatural. Supernatural is a good show but I feel that it is just running on empty. As for the walking dead, I don't want to even get started on the walking search for Sophia (however if this was season 1 it would blow all the sci-fi shows away. Best animated show maybe south park followed by American Dad but not Family Guy. I am happy with the outcome of the restmoreless

I totally tweeted this story to the cast of Community just to show them how much we love them and Gillian replied that they really do love and appreciate the honor, which is another reason why I love Community so much!

  • blueboy11

I'm just laughing now because Heather Morris won Best Comedic Actress with Amy Poehler and other lady geniuses in the poll.

  • PierreLucRober

Community is underrated as in not watched by a lot of people(poor ratings which is why it probably wont get a new season), and is popular on this site. Mind boggling I know.

  • Yaspaa

    Because it's old and dull.

  • titan4lizife

How was NCIS not nominated for best overall show? And you really did drop the ball with the whole Community-multiple-nominations-for-contrasting-categories thing.

Okay, I know a lot of people love NCIS, but it's not exactly worthy of that nomination. I'll try to be non-biased, but from what I've seen of that show, it's script needs tweaking, there's been very little character development for a few of the characters, it's a bit too sunny for some of the tipics it attempts to deal with, and it tires a little to hard to be 'cool'. If you want a good procedural nominated, I'd say Criminal Minds, and even that might be pushing it (and I LOVE Criminal Minds, so that's hard to say.)

This poll was a farce from the beginning with so many shows missing from their various catagories it was obvious that not a lot of thought had gone into the lists in the first place.

How can TV.com expect us to choose say the best animated series from a list that didn't include ALL the primetime animated shows? How can the Best New Series poll not include ALL the new series? A list of which can be found quite easily on this very site. How can a show like Community be listed amongst both Best Overall Series as well as Best Comedy AND Most Underated???

And to have a Best Overall Series poll asking us to basically vote on the best show from ALL the combined lists, then that poll itself MUST consist of ALL the shows from those same lists.

No, I'm sorry but I think that all we've done is agree or not with the Best Of preferences of the TV.com staff, not help them put together the results of our personal choices.moreless

Maybe watch the whole first season of Community before you get mad. Just try it out. Oh, and if you think that they are personal choices, you should have check out the comments of the poll while they were still going on. About 50% of all the comments (exaggerating a little) were community fans and all of their comments were thumbed up like 30 times...just saying.

  • JamesButko

You should have seen all the posts on reddit.com/r/community telling fans to vote. I swear there was a new thread every other day.

Nope, the most important thing is to find a nice Website where you can discuss things with your friends and post comments without having to scroll past Spammers. (Besides, the way you write yourtrue makes it look like torture. Just a thought)

  • Jared3648

Nina Dobrev best dramatic actress??? Huh??? Of ALL the actresses that are on primetime drama tv shows???????????

Are you kidding me right now?

  • MoodyAbramowi

how can a series be both the overall best and the most underrated that is ridiculous, i voted and yes community is a great show, but it felt like people weren't even reading the category just blindly voting for community

I saw community once and never watched it again. Saw Terra Nova once and never watched it again. Watched Fringe once and never watched it again. See a pattern emerging here. Never watched all the other shows. Guess I don't know Comedy or Drama.
Person of Interest is great and the comfortable NCIS and LA.

Any chance Community was sponsored by Target? Why do I ask-because of the cashier and nutcracker scene, doesn't the employee look like actress on Community and no it is not the one with Sabrina from HGTV, different ad. lol

  • DrSpongejr

Family Guy doesn't deserve a pat on the back, yet alone Best Animated Series.

  • tvspot

guys, please go easy on the eggnogs

  • tvspot

so the top show is one that may be cancelled?.....sure

  • SokkaAppa

Guys don't be dumb. NBC doesn't care how how strongly you feel about a great show. They care that you actually watch it. Ratings = profits. You voting for it on tv.com = no profits. So instead of asking the suits from NBC to review a poll maybe you should just sit down and watch the show, tell your family tell your friends and blah blah blah. Come on use your heads.

Have you heard of the Community flash mob in NY? It was a decent turnout, but guess who filmed it. Sony. Sony videotaped part of it as the flash mob moved to the NBC gift shop at 30 Rockafeller. This is just part of the Community's movement to get the show back on the air...TV.com was just a way for us Community nerds to pass the time until our hiatus ends.

    • slerman12

Your picture is Willow from Buffy and you like Community, and therefore you are awesome.

  • torontogirl98

Can we scream these results to the idiots over an NBC so we can have our beloved show back on Tv where it belongs?!

  • Draconax

It's a damn shame Archer hasn't beaten out Family Guy for best animated show, but most of the rest of these I greatly approve.

  • loldude1

Somebody please let the suits at NBC know about this.

  • Summerqueen

Okay, I love Vampire Diaries, but I have to say, Nina's acting is one of the worst things about it. It is incredibly, incredibly heavy-handed. I suppose if you can't appreciate subtlety, you might think she's a good actress . . . I will say that she does have a lot of work thrown at her on the show, having to maintain two characters, one of which is in constant flux as a villainess/antiheroine. Perhaps I could get on board with her being the Best Underrated Actress because of that. But Best Dramatic Actress, hands down? No. I really don't get that.

I agree. Although, I'm impressed at how she somehow holds herself differently for both charcters - it's easy to tell which she's playing, even without Katherine's get up and curly hair coming into play - but she tends to show very little range other than that. She IS good, but great? Worthy of Best Dramatic actress? I don't think so. Anna from Fringe deserves that. She's fantastic, and she plays at LEAST three versions of the same character with absolutly no hitch. She's a talent worthy of that award.
