Community Takes the Top Prize in TV.com's Best of 2011 Poll

Before we dive headfirst into 2012, we have one last bit of 2011 business to wrap up. In December, we asked you--the handsome, intelligent, and splendid-smelling readers of TV.com--to vote on your favorite shows, actors, and characters in our Best of 2011 poll. Well, the results are in. And they show that you have really good taste in television.

The Greendale Community College Action Committee came out in full force, helping NBC's Community take the titles of Best Overall Series, Best Comedy, and Most Underrated Series. The show grabbed an impressive 27 percent of the votes in the Best Overall Series category, beating 10 other shows, including Fringe (18 percent), Game of Thrones (17 percent), The Vampire Diaries (13 percent), and Breaking Bad (10 percent). The victory caps a turbulent year for Community, which was bounced off of NBC's midseason schedule due to low ratings but created a ridiculously passionate fan base online, particularly here at TV.com.

HBO's Game of Thrones also had a great showing, winning Best New Series and Best Drama (and did you see where it ended up on our Top 100 Everything of 2011 list?). Best Sci-Fi Series went to fan-favorite Supernatural, and Family Guy continued its dominance of the Best Animated Show category.

On the people side, John Noble finally earned some recognition for his work as Dr. Walter Bishop on Fringe. Not bad, considering he was up against heavyweights Bryan Cranston, Sean Bean, and Michael C. Hall. Now if only other awards shows would follow suit and at least give Noble a nomination! Nina Dobrev of The Vampire Diaries was named Best Dramatic Actress for her dual roles on the CW show. And it appears you all have mucho respect for actresses who play multiple versions of themselves; Anna Torv of Fringe finished second. Donald Glover of Community edged out Jim Parsons of The Big Bang Theory for Best Comedic Actor, and Glee's Heather Morris topped the field in the Best Comedic Actress category.

Here are the winners for the major categories in TV.com's Best of 2011 poll:

Best Overall Series of 2011: Community
Best New Series: Game of Thrones
Best Drama Series: Game of Thrones
Best Comedy Series: Community
Best Sci-Fi or Fantasy Series: Supernatural
Best Animated Series: Family Guy
Best Crime Procedural: Castle
Most Underrated Series: Community
Favorite Guilty Pleasure: Revenge
Best Dramatic Actor: John Noble, Fringe
Best Dramatic Actress: Nina Dobrev, The Vampire Diaries
Best Comedic Actor: Donald Glover, Community
Best Comedic Actress: Heather Morris, Glee
Breakout Star: Jason O'Mara, Terra Nova

Thank you to everyone who voted! For the results in all 35 categories, including Biggest Badass and Most Underrated Series, head over to TV.com's Best of 2011 poll.

This list was ok but there was some things that should of not won/been changed. Community is a good show but I really don't think it should be considered in a category of underrated. Community with all the hype of this season and question of it being canceled made it quite overrated if anything. It is a great series so maybe if this was a prior year. However it has always averaged around 5 million since it started. I would say that one of the most underrated shows on tv would be shameless or blue mountain state. Best overall series this year I would have to go with Breaking Bad (due to a great season). As my number one. Followed by Sons of Anarchy (another great season) with 2nd runner up community. Best new series I would agree with Game of Thrones taking top spot as American horror story as a runner up, would like to see other shows added like Wilfred, Shameless, Death Valley.. etc. I do like new girl though and Person of Interest. Best drama I am fine with game of thrones followed by Breaking Bad. I was a little disappointed in this latest season of Dexter. For comedy based on this year I would go with Community followed by Wilfred and Blue Mountain State. Big bang theory latest season I did not care for, compared to season 3 which was my fav big bang theory season. Best Sci-fi I would have to go with Fringe which did not make the list, followed by supernatural. Supernatural is a good show but I feel that it is just running on empty. As for the walking dead, I don't want to even get started on the walking search for Sophia (however if this was season 1 it would blow all the sci-fi shows away. Best animated show maybe south park followed by American Dad but not Family Guy. I am happy with the outcome of the rest

Community is underrated as in not watched by a lot of people(poor ratings which is why it probably wont get a new season), and is popular on this site. Mind boggling I know.

How was NCIS not nominated for best overall show? And you really did drop the ball with the whole Community-multiple-nominations-for-contrasting-categories thing.
Reply
Flag
Okay, I know a lot of people love NCIS, but it's not exactly worthy of that nomination. I'll try to be non-biased, but from what I've seen of that show, it's script needs tweaking, there's been very little character development for a few of the characters, it's a bit too sunny for some of the tipics it attempts to deal with, and it tires a little to hard to be 'cool'. If you want a good procedural nominated, I'd say Criminal Minds, and even that might be pushing it (and I LOVE Criminal Minds, so that's hard to say.)

This poll was a farce from the beginning with so many shows missing from their various catagories it was obvious that not a lot of thought had gone into the lists in the first place.

How can TV.com expect us to choose say the best animated series from a list that didn't include ALL the primetime animated shows? How can the Best New Series poll not include ALL the new series? A list of which can be found quite easily on this very site. How can a show like Community be listed amongst both Best Overall Series as well as Best Comedy AND Most Underated???

And to have a Best Overall Series poll asking us to basically vote on the best show from ALL the combined lists, then that poll itself MUST consist of ALL the shows from those same lists.

No, I'm sorry but I think that all we've done is agree or not with the Best Of preferences of the TV.com staff, not help them put together the results of our personal choices.

Maybe watch the whole first season of Community before you get mad. Just try it out. Oh, and if you think that they are personal choices, you should have check out the comments of the poll while they were still going on. About 50% of all the comments (exaggerating a little) were community fans and all of their comments were thumbed up like 30 times...just saying.

how can a series be both the overall best and the most underrated that is ridiculous, i voted and yes community is a great show, but it felt like people weren't even reading the category just blindly voting for community
Reply
Flag
Underrated as in the TV world, because it doesn't get as many views as the rest of the TV shows it's up against. It's ratings are low, and yet it's critically acclaimed. That's like the definition of underrated right there.
Reply
Flag
no ratings in the typical sense are how people judge a show after watching it and no one watches community and says o its not that good everyone watches it, what you are describing is not underrated but unpopular
Reply

Underrated and unpopular go hand in hand.... just saying. Except unpopular has a negative connotation.

Thats exactly what I thought people are getting so mad or confused about how Community is both a favorite show but also underrated, but it can be both easily!

I saw community once and never watched it again. Saw Terra Nova once and never watched it again. Watched Fringe once and never watched it again. See a pattern emerging here. Never watched all the other shows. Guess I don't know Comedy or Drama.

Person of Interest is great and the comfortable NCIS and LA.

First of all that is impossible if you watched an episode of Community and never wanted to see it again unless that is you are brain-dead or something, and if it was the pilot you watched well it is really unfair to judge a show 100% by its pilot. Community in my opinion gets better and better every episode

Guys don't be dumb. NBC doesn't care how how strongly you feel about a great show. They care that you actually watch it. Ratings = profits. You voting for it on tv.com = no profits. So instead of asking the suits from NBC to review a poll maybe you should just sit down and watch the show, tell your family tell your friends and blah blah blah. Come on use your heads.

Have you heard of the Community flash mob in NY? It was a decent turnout, but guess who filmed it. Sony. Sony videotaped part of it as the flash mob moved to the NBC gift shop at 30 Rockafeller. This is just part of the Community's movement to get the show back on the air...TV.com was just a way for us Community nerds to pass the time until our hiatus ends.

Okay, I love Vampire Diaries, but I have to say, Nina's acting is one of the worst things about it. It is incredibly, incredibly heavy-handed. I suppose if you can't appreciate subtlety, you might think she's a good actress . . . I will say that she does have a lot of work thrown at her on the show, having to maintain two characters, one of which is in constant flux as a villainess/antiheroine. Perhaps I could get on board with her being the Best Underrated Actress because of that. But Best Dramatic Actress, hands down? No. I really don't get that.
Reply
Flag
I agree. Although, I'm impressed at how she somehow holds herself differently for both charcters - it's easy to tell which she's playing, even without Katherine's get up and curly hair coming into play - but she tends to show very little range other than that. She IS good, but great? Worthy of Best Dramatic actress? I don't think so. Anna from Fringe deserves that. She's fantastic, and she plays at LEAST three versions of the same character with absolutly no hitch. She's a talent worthy of that award.
Reply
Flag
I hope NBC sees this award. I know its nothing major but the show is still getting recignised and should not be treated that way.

Im talking about Community by the way.
Reply
Flag
I love Community and I'm glad it gets awards. That said, really? No Breaking Bad what so ever? And John Noble is fantastic in Fringe and deserves recognition, but again, nothing compared to Bryan Cranston this season.

Other than that, I don't really think Glee should be considered a comedy, and as a result, no actress from Glee should win Best Comedic Actress. Amy Poehler should. And Terra Nova doesn't deserve anything. I also wish Homeland got a bit more recognition. But then again, like Breaking Bad, it's a cable show, the only cable show that won anything here was Game of Thrones. I guess that's saying something.
Reply
Flag
Problem is, no one know's where to put Glee because drama fits it even less. So unless you have a better category that actually exists, it will be there.
Reply
Flag
I know a category it belongs in, but fans of the show won't like it!
Reply
Flag
Hey Community fans out there... I have never watched it but.... I am kind of curious now.... So if one is to watch it do you recommend to start with season 1 or better skip to season 3? Or perhaps it doesn't really matter
Reply
Flag
The first couple of episodes are good, the rest are not. oh, you asked for the fans input. my bad. Abed is the worst.
Reply
Flag
I know you've got your answer, but I feel the need to add that Season 3 is by no means something that should be missed The difference between it and the first two Seasons is where it's based - in the first two Seasons, 95% of everything happend AT Greendale, but now a lot of epiosdes are taking us away from the college and it's showing us more of the study groups personal lives. Frankly, I think this has broadened it's abilities to be great. There's only so much awesomeness you can set in a community college, and although I'm sure they haven't NEARLY run out of ideas yet, the inclusion of the world outside of the college is, for me, a good step forward for an already amazing show.

Yeah the whole thing is awesome the very first few episodes are great at establishing the characters and Greendale universe and the show gets even more fantastic after that crazier and more hilarious-I promise anyone who starts watching will not be disappointed!
Reply
Flag
What would be the point of skipping anything? I've never understood the point of skipping earlier seasons to jump too later ones. You won't know the characters well enough or some of the long standing plot lines. Plus the first season in just about every show is usually the best season or at least at the the top.
Reply
Flag
I'd say skip nothing, but keep an open mind at the beginning. The first episode is basically the story of one character, and his views of the other characters, with all the others (except a character named Britta) playing very small roles compared to later in the series. I haven't re-watched the first episode, but when I first watched it, it seemed like a good, promising show, but nowhere near as good as I heard it was. It was in the second episode where I really started to get into it. But even then, there were a few wrinkles in the show which weren't smoothed out until maybe 5-7 episodes into the series. Even with the issues the series had early on, most of the episodes were very entertaining IMO, and help to give you a better understanding of the characters than if you were to skip those episodes, which in tern helps you enjoy the later episodes that much more. There seem to be debates between which season is the best. Some people like season 1 more, because the episodes seem a bit more character-driven, though it does have a few of the odd tv show/movie reference episodes mixed in ("Contemporary American Poultry," and "Modern Warfare being the two biggest examples that I can think of). Other people prefer season 2, which had a lot more of those tv/movie reference episodes, but still had a decent amount of character-driven episodes. Personally, I enjoy both, but prefer the reference episodes, which is why I feel like season 2 is easily the best (despite the fact that "Modern Warfare" is still my favorite episode of the series). As for season 3, there are some issues which have weakened it a bit, and seems to have put a few people off, but I still think it's great in its own way. It seems to be trying to make a more even combination of the character-driven episodes and the reference episodes, which I do appreciate. It could end up being about as good as the other seasons if it comes back strong from the hiatus, but considering the fact that it only has 10 episodes so far, the weaker ones do stand out more than the weaker episodes in the other seasons. Anyway, hope you enjoy it. :)

Community is the best show on TV right now. I agree it isn't the best overall show on televsion history. The clever and the style the show has been directed which is like a movie instead of the conventional sitcom or general tv show. The plot, ideas and philosophies are as equally as good compared to other show as they are actually digging quite a depth of content. Splendidly fitted into 22 minute episode. Despite these good content. They are able to transcend these things into comedy where it's most appealing with many people.

The show is definitely underrated. It's worth mentioning here anyway. Many people have no idea what IS community. Season 3 has actually been the strongest season of all in Community. The RATING is patchy. Otherwise, congratulations to other winners as well. Breaking Bad definitely looks really good as well as Parks and Recreation which I both personally love too. But community deserves the shout for 2011

what i dont get is fringe is the 2nd best show of the year yet supernatural is a better sci fi show!!!!

also while community is definitely the best comedy on tv the best show overall probably was breaking bad...
Reply
Flag
Simple: for some reason based on insane troll logic, Fringe was not a nominee in the sci-fi category. I have a feeling it probably would have taken that category no problem (no offense to Supernatural, of course).
Reply
Flag
no offense here, I love Fringe And Supernatural , even Grimm. I hate networks for putting them on at same night and time like they do with everything. ''Lincoln'' is the character with glasses on Fringe that is burnt on one realm[Faux Livia's side] but not other one. For the person who asked earlier.

I have to agree with Spoontown. Community is hardly the best overall show on television. As soon as the show is in danger, everyone suddenly has selective amnesia and seems to forget that this season has actually been pretty patchy. Yes, Community is an intelligent program and rather better than most shows on TV, but it is not the best show on TV. It's not even the best show on the night it airs. I would choose Parks and Recreation, Breaking Bad, and Game of Thrones as Best Overall Series before I'd pick Community.

I gave Community the 4 episode rule (watch at least 4 eps) and each one was more boring than the one before. I actually liked the premiere episode of Work It. Made me laugh, and I'll watch anything that makes me laugh, no matter what anyone else thinks of it.

I am sorry but Work-it over Community that is a sick joke right? There is no better more hilarious, genius fantastic show in the world than Community and I feel bad that you cannot recognize the brilliance that it is!
Reply

Do the one season rule. Seriously. The first few episodes have to get the characters established, then when that's over you connect with the characters as they just get funnier and funnier. Community is a show that rewards people for watching it from the beginning and in order. If you see an episode of Community out of the blue in the middle of Season 2 or 3, you're probably going to say WTF to yourself as the cast goes on a KFC Spaceship, sing Kiss from a Rose, wear black goatees, join Glee, and having a hierarchical system where chicken fingers equal power.

I'm really glad and agree that Community is the Best Comedy Series and Most Underrated Series, and that Donald Glover is the Best Comedic Actor. However, as much as I love the show, I'm not sure I'd agree with it being Best Overall Series. Also, I'm surprised Breaking Bad only got 10% of the voting in that category. Oh well.

Also, LOL @ O'Mara as Breakout Star. I thought all of the other nominations were better. Esposito, in particular, was incredible in 2011.

I still stand by my original statement of Breaking Bad, and then Fringe as a close second in the best overall, but now that I've seen actually Community, I can't really say that I'm really that upset that it won. It's such a great comedy, with a nice mixture of character-driven episodes and crazy episodes based around certain film or TV related themes (action movies, zombie movies, stop-motion cartoons, etc.). While I would say that season 3 is slightly weaker than it had been in the first 2 seasons, I still absolutely love it.

Community undoubtedly deserves the Best Comedy Series and Most Underrated Series accolades, but it definitely wasn't the Best Overall Series of 2011!

Nobody's a bigger fan of the show than I am, but to be fair, either Game Of Thrones or Breaking Bad should have won the prize (GoT had a slight edge since it was newer and shinier than Breaking Bad).

I think the sheer awesomeness of the show blinded our judgment!!

You're right! Community is not the best show ever but it is the best comedy created in the US and I am clad that it has received the recognition it deserves; from fans at least if not from the NBC twats who aim to please the crowds. I'm happy that 30 Rock is coming back but there is still a slot for Community, right?

And as a fantasy geek Im glad that Game of Thrones did so well! I've loved the series for so many years and to see what a wonderful job HBO did with it was just a dream come true. Ice and Fire! (and Homeland, that show is so good that there are no adjectives)

(Except for maybe the award for "Breakout Star". Jason O'Mara? Really? Not only was his performance mediocre, largely due to the show he is/was on, but he is also the least "breakout" of the bunch. He is fairly well known and has an established career.)
