Community's First Season 5 Trailer Is Here, and Jeff Winger Is... a Greendale Professor?!? (VIDEO)

First thing first! Watch this trailer for Community's fifth season, which premieres January 2 with back-to-back new episodes.

I'm fully expecting half the female students at Greendale Community College to do that "Eye Love You" thing from Raiders of the Lost Ark when Community returns for Season 5 because get this: JEFF WINGER IS A TEACHER IN COMMUNITY SEASON 5! Or at least that's the case according to this new promo for the upcoming Harmonful season.

Is this even allowed? Can the leader of the study group be the one who makes them study? This... this... might be able to work? With Dan Harmon returning to his former role as the drunken sea captain of this out-of-control whimsical barge, I'm guessing it will be fine. And I'm assuming everything in the trailer was clipped from the first episode of the season, so anything can happen further down the line. Chang went from professor to student, Jeff could too.

A few things to note based on the footage:

  • It doesn't look like anyone from the study group takes Jeff's class. But Garrett is!
  • Jeff's solo lawyering venture went bad. Real bad.
  • The Greendale teacher's lounge looks like a fun place to hang out.
  • Hey, it's Mike Ehrmentraut as one of Jeff's fellow professors!
  • Abed makes a nice plant.

What do YOU make of this Jeff-as-a-teacher wrinkle?

I did suspect that they would make him a teacher in order to keep him in the show. Other cast members could potentially make the same transition - Shirley could teach small business skills whilst still running her sandwich shop, Abed some sort of media studies whilst being a Youtube filmmaker, Annie could be a part-time forensics lab tech whilst teaching organisational skills....

To be honest, I don't think so. They are not teacher material and if the show would put them on that spot, it would be like a normal comic show giving us awkward moments. That's not the way Community is doing things.

That clip was cut in an amusing movie trailer way, but the underlying content does have me worried for intercharacter dynamics, so I'm clicking "gonna have to see first". Still, I am quite confident that they can pull off the show no matter what.

Yeaaaah, what a great opening for the fifth season. So much anticipation and so much love. Although the fourth season wasn't that great, it had episodes (like most of the puppet one) that were better then most of the other comical shows. So looking forward to it.

I often run into reruns on Comedy Central and always stay on watching them. After hours I realise the world has moved on, but who minds.

Jeff met his dad. Britta and Troy broke up after they (and presumably the writers) realized they had no chemistry. Jeff graduated (explaining why he's back at his lawyer job before it fails), and so did Pierce.

... I think that's it.

AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRHHHHHHHHHH!

Thanks for the YouTube link guys.

This looks awesome. I'm glad Season 4 wasn't ignored, I know it was flawed but it's still a part of our favourite quirky sitcom. You don't erase your Uncle Mike from the family album just because he spent six months in the not-so-big house for tax evasion. Take the rough with the smooth and hopefully the jump in quality from last season to this could be just what the show needs to push it on for years to come.

Season 4 was not awesome, but it was well-intentioned. It was almost like a bunch of fans got together to write the show and all they could think to do was make reference to older, funnier episodes. "Hey remember that time we created 6 timelines? That was so cool, right?"

I wrote a better Season 4 finale in 15 minutes than what the professionals managed, but I do get your point. The season was sorely lacking in originality and they tried to recreate the brilliance by mining previous seasons, it's a shame really.

A low down dirty shame! It's now on in syndication and it's so jarring to see a season 1-3 episode followed/preceded by a season 4 episode. The difference is striking. Season 4 is only funny if you forget the stomach ache you got from laughing at the episode where Jeff plays pool in shorts.

I don't watch a lot of comedies anymore, but I'll watch this. I'm even looking forward to it a bit.

Now that Community is back in my thoughts, Donald Glover's decision to leave seems even stranger than it did before. I don't doubt that he will be able to find another gig, but he will never be as good in anything else.

It reminds me of when Richard Coyle (Jeff) left Coupling. That show was funnier than anything else at the time, and Jeff was by far the funniest character. But after a while he just left the show and refused to even do a goodbye episode. It wasn't the same without him.

I think RC was afraid of being typecast, and I would guess that DG is thinking something similar. It doesn't make sense to me. If another year or two of doing the same thing that you've already been doing for several years will make people always think of you as THAT character, then it's already too late. The only thing you know for sure is that if you leave, no one will ever think that you're THAT awesome again.

Just as long as they don't use the lame "It's unethical for a professor to date a student_ Excuse as yet another way to keep Jeff and Annie apart. It's time to pull that trigger and explore the potential of that pairing.

No, they really don't, he's twice her age and she's an immature child with a crush, they need to explore getting beyond that mess.

They work well together, and care about each other. They do need to address the relationship in a more grown up manner, but she makes Jeff a better person, and he gives her confidence and tones down her neurotic side.

Troy and Britta got together, despite a similar age difference and Troy being immature, and while Season 4 wrecked that potential, they got the chance to explore it.

Dec 11, 2013
They really don't work well together as a couple. She's needy and wants to change him, he's shallow and ashamed to be aging. She is in love with the idea of him but not that thrilled with who he actually is, and he isn't particularly interested in her at all beyond the surface level.

Troy and Britta got together because they have similar emotional needs - inside they're both lightly-wounded children looking for connection - and found something to build on until it didn't work.

But not every character automatically needs to hook up with every other character on a show, real people have interests outside the core group of characters because their lives aren't situated purely around a single premise. A good show should always strive to recognize their characters' worlds outside the chief conceit of the storytelling rather than just continue to look inwards until there's no one left to date.

While Troy and Bta got together because they are similar, Jeff and Annie work because they are different. Annie started out as a young girl with a crush on Troy, which transferred to Jeff later. Jeff started out as a shallow guy lusting after Britta, and later saw Annie in a more sexual/romantic sense. Both are damaged individuals (they wouldn't be at Greendale otherwise) but they both have helped the other grow and become better people, and both are more self aware now.

Annie has gone from a rather timid but bubbly girl focused on crushes to a more confident woman who recognizes that she has a crush on Jeff, and is aware of it, but still is physically attracted to him, enjoys fantasizing about a life with him (though she can reign it as well) and is proud of his accomplishments.

Jeff has gone from selfish lawyer interested in scotch and one night stands to a person who cares about Annie (the only actual person in his heart), is concerned for her safety, and doesn't want to see her make the same mistakes he did. He has also changed his views regarding marriage from "nut up and die alone!" to openly discussing a hypothetical marriage to Annie with her.

The reason to pull the trigger on the Jeff/Annie relationship is not to simply have a hookup storyline, but because the show has been teasing and building up the relationship for 4 seasons. Of course they should have plots and interests beyond the romantic involvement (Unfortunately Annie tends to have her standalone plotliness cut off early in each season for some reason) but to have built up the relationship and the chemestry of the characters (and actors) and not go anywhere with it would be a waste.

I would not use the fact of Chang going from teacher to student in the same breath as this could work for Jeff in the opposite way since Chang to me was never the same after being a teacher. A few good things here and there but teacher Chang is priceless and can't be beat compared to all else he's done. Actually mostly bad in my opinion since they constantly morphed him into this, that and the other.

But I see Jeff doing great since he was the rebel / leader and those types can morph into something else lots better. I hope so.

When I doubt I say just feature Dean Pelton a lot, haha. The most constant for me by far and funniest by a mile. And then Troy is leaving so I'm not happy about that and where things go.

Interesting idea. If Dan Harmon doesn't want to erase that awful mess that was season 4 from continuity, this seems like a good way to bring Jeff back without feeling cheap, and to shake things up for the (potentially) final season. And at least this way, we'll get back to having a more well-utilized teacher on the show (possibly two, depending how how they use Mike Johnathan Banks' character).

I am still a bit cautious about this season, given the fact that it has been a year since Dan Harmon was at the helm so he might be a bit rusty, and Donald Glover is going to have a reduced role, but at least I can say I'm more hopeful than I was last season.

Way back when (6 months ago) I'm pretty sure I made my feelings known in regards to the 4th season of Community. After some time and perspective, I'll admit I may have gone too far in my criticisms (likening it to the black death was definitely over the line). But having said that, I was still wishing for the infamous retcon.

I remember commenting with you about what path Harmon would take on season 5 in terms of continuity, and it obviously appears he's NOT acting like season 4 never happened. Initially, I was surprised. The new/fired writers botched Tritta so badly, not to mention the once cherished darkest timeline was monotonously beaten to death with a blunt object (am I going too far again?). Personally, I thought the Harmon-less Community was so divergent from the vision he had for his show that he'd decide to scrap the whole season. But that beautiful bastard has proven me wrong once again.

Making Jeff a teacher is a stroke genius. And I love that he's using Abed as a conduit to get his "revamp" / "do-over" theme across. It looks like Harmon is addressing what happened in season 4, but doing it within the confines of Abed's obsession with television pop culture, just as he's done so very well in the past.

Even with the reduced screen time of Donald Glover, I must say I'm weirdly optimistic. Here's hoping the best comedy on television will soon be back.

It will be interesting to see how he handles the whole "reboot" aspect of the season. I never got around to watching Scrubs' final season, though I wasn't really crazy about the idea of the reboot they had there, but based on this trailer, it seems like this season will handle it with enough of Dan Harmon's meta-ness that it could fit right in with the rest of the (Harmon-ran) series.

I will say, the closer we've gotten to the show's return, the more optimistic I've become. I still don't want to get my hopes up too high, given the fact that Dan Harmon has been away for a season and may be a bit rusty, and Donald Glover's reduced role, but those things don't worry me nearly as much as they did before.

Yeah, reboots and retcons have usually gone notoriously poorly, but this Dan Harmon we're talking about. If ANYONE can inject the right amount of (as you mentioned) meta to make it work, it's him.

I really shouldn't be getting my hopes up so high. Harmon has set a very lofty bar for himself. But dammit, I just can't help it.

I quite like the idea for how it's continuing the story (and Abed's self-deprecating reference) but the trailer seemed kind of different to both the old and season 4 feel to me.
