Community's Renewal Chances Are Nil Because Yahoo Screen Is Dead

Hmmm, where to lead this story off? With the news that Community's chances for a seventh season are even more minuscule than they were before or with the news that Yahoo has shut down its online streaming venture Yahoo Screen?

Let's start with the boring business stuff first, because we love boring business stuff around here. After two years, Yahoo Screen, which was the one-time Internet giant's foot in the door for online streaming, has been killed, Variety reports. It was home to Community's sixth season as well as originals Other Space and Sin City Saints while Yahoo toyed with original programming. Yahoo Screen was also the company's repository for its collection of Saturday Night Live content, one of the Yahoo's big gets as it elbowed its way into the crowded streaming space.

The shutdown of Yahoo Screen shouldn't be a surprise at all (in fact, I'll admit I thought it was already dead, or maybe that was my brain telling me it was as good as dead). Back in October, Yahoo revealed that it lost $42 million on Yahoo Screen, and if you're a business major, then you know "lost [X amount of money]" is bad business. Yahoo Screen's previously produced content will be moved to other Yahoo appropriate sites.

As for Community, well today's news is just another brick in the wall that says Community is no more, no matter how much we all pray to our shrines to Annie's Boobs. Presumably, Community is now available for another outlet to take it on, but with its ratings track record and that nasty $42 million red ink around it, it would take an eccentric billionaire superfan to bring it back from the dead. However, if you must hang on to something, there's always a chance of a Community movie.

On a scale of 0 to 1, how surprised are you? Zero being not surprised at all, and 1 being not surprised at all also.

it's sad Yahoos marketing failure is being blamed on Community. Community was a good show, but no network should base it's entire everything on the viewership of one show.

6 seasons and a movie. WHo even wants season 7? Do we really need another One Tree Hill or Grey's Anatomy? Shows have a lifespan; exceeding that lifespan is as disrespectful as cutting it off early. Community ended perfectly. When season 5 ended, I was very upset to think it wouldn;t be renewed. This time, not so much. This is how it should be. That said, I would totally be down for a movie.

What is it with all these shitty TV show download sites spamming the comment section these days? If I want to download an episode of something I'll use Usenet, not some crappy website that probably installs adware and spyware and goes through 20 layers of annoying popups.

The prophecy was Six Seasons and a Movie. I never expected a 7th season, but I am now expecting a movie so the prophecy would finally be fulfilled.

I thought this was dead anyway. I wonder how tired Dan Harmon is of answering questions about a possible Community movie?

Not surprised... content was not the problem so much as delivery, and I couldn't see how they were making money to begin with-commercial free content and no monthly fee, when I would have been delighted to give them a little money either per-view or a modest monthly fee. Hell, they could have charged less than Hulu for comm-free, avoided the massive losses and brought real competition to the game.

The difficulty using the Roku app was the biggest problem for us. It was worth the struggle for what we knew was the last season of Community but we never managed to finish Other Space (which we liked, just not quite as much). They launched without being ready.

Losing Troy really hurt the group dynamic and chemistry. It's a shame we couldn't have gotten six full seasons (I will never recognize the blight that was season 4) with the original cast, Pierce included.

Even with all its problems, discontinuations and production issues, it's still a top 5 TV comedy of all time in my book.

Lossing 40 million is a problem.

But it also expected that as a new business they would lose money on it for a while. Youtube spent years making hundreds of millions of dollars in losses a year.

I'm more sad about not having more Other Space, which had just the right amount of comedy and science fiction for my liking.

I really hope that community RIP forver so McHale stop receiving screen and acting opportunities out of comedy for good.

Like everyone else I'm not surprised. I'd love to see the movie happen - but even I'm not hopeful about that at this point. #sixseasonsandstillnomovie .. doh...

I'm more upset that there won't be any more Other Space. Besides, Community already showed us in the finale how bad and trope-y a seventh season would be.

Is the show worth watching? What I mean is does it have an ending, or is there a cliffhanger at the end of the season?

There is an ending to Other Space. I wanted more but I didn't NEED it, and it's a pretty good 7 episode series.

Community does not need another season. It has been squeezed dry of everything it could give. Other Space does need another season or two, however. That was a fun and good show. Not super-expensive to make either, as i have understood it so anybody who picks it up could make easy money there. Community was probably actually the main reason why yahoo screen lost all that money, because it was very expensive to make with a big and over-paid cast.

Have to say no more Community makes me a little misty eyed. Just watching Harmontown and there were a lot of people who held the show close to his show.

I suspect Yahoo screen had to commisson another season unless they were shut down, an Yahoo simply wasn't willing or unable to take another 40 million

What will we do without Yahoo Screen.

I don't mind if they don't make another season, especially since the finale felt like a perfect series finale to me. My main concern now is if they'll be able to find a new partner for the movie.

If Netflix gave Adam Sandler a movie deal, surely they could produce a single Community movie. They seem to like niche programming, and Community is uber-niche. Amazingly uber-niche.

The problem with Netflix is that they don't have the rights to stream Community yet, and probably won't, since Hulu still owns the rights to the first 5 seasons. And, while I could be wrong about this (as far as I know, nobody at Netflix commented on the reasons), I'm almost completely certain that the main reason why Netflix didn't pick up Hannibal when it was cancelled was because of Amazon owning the streaming rights for the show. I think we'd be much more likely to see, for an example, an Arrested Development movie, or even one for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which isn't a Netflix series, but they do have streaming rights for.

That being said, I'm sure there's still someone out there who could help them make a movie. Maybe Hulu?

What happens to the shows they had -- do they just go offline and are lost forever? I never got around to watching Other Space.

I do know Community Season 6 is getting a DVD release from Sony. For some odd reason though the commentaries from Harmon are not listed in the extras. Another thing that could disappear.

It has to. 5 and a half seasons and a movie doesn't have the same ring to it.

My real question is, does this finally unlock the deal and allow the content to be distributed via iTunes. I loved this season but having to watch it through proxies because I live in Canada is a real bummer.

Losing money would have been fine business if it meant they recouped market visibility for the brand, that's value. That is not what they did, though.

Plus any company that is targeted for asset stripping by hedge funds and activist investors, like Yahoo simply can't afford to make losses on projects.
