Crashing into Los Angeles

LA is burning... with passion.

That cigar smoke you smell and the languid heat beating at your back can only mean one thing: Starz's oddball original series Crash (very loosely based on the criminally-overrated Oscar-winning movie) is returning tonight. So what can we expect from our Angeleno friends? Well, more of the same.

And by same I mean another heap of sleazy Los Angeles ennui, more peculiar-but-beguiling line readings from a whacked-out Dennis Hopper, and a few more contentious (but sexy) on-again-off-again relationships. Plus we're joined this season by the always-welcome Eric Roberts as a menacing real estate developer who fancies himself a saint, and the underused Julie Warner as his assistant/confidant. So that's good!

Basically love and power-plays and sex and curious philosophy all mingle in this strange series' portrait of a Los Angeles not beset by angels (or demons), but by complicated folks who, while not "regular" like you and me, are at least terrestrial. And hell, they're certainly more shaded than the characters in Paul Haggis' agitprop-lite stunt of a movie.

So should you watch it? Sure, give it a try. Like I said it's a strange series that's sort of hard to pin down. But maybe you'll be better at it than I am.

"Crash" season 2 premieres tonight at 10pm on Starz
