Criminal Minds Overcomes Its Contract Standoff, Officially Gets Renewed for Season 9

The long national nightmare of not knowing whether Criminal Minds will be back for another season is overr. Because Criminal Minds will be back, says Deadline Hollywood. Phew. That wasn't so hard.

Even though CBS renewed most of its current series back in March, the network hadn't re-upped on the procedural because it hadn't reached contract agreements with much of the cast. But ABC Studios and CBS have now officially come to terms with Thomas Gibson, Joe Mantegna, Shemar Moore, Kirsten Vangsness, and A.J. Cook.

Vangsness and Cook had been holding out, demanding equal pay as their male counterparts. The reportedly received raises but didn't get everything they asked for.

CBS has yet to announce which new series it's picking up for 2013-2014.

Is it just me or do the money holders behind Criminal Minds really have a thing against female actors? They two thirds of their female cast not so long ago, were going to replace said actresses with another male actor (before the outcry) and now it comes to light that they won't pay said actresses the same amount as their male cast members? Poorly played CBS, poorly played.

I think we should let CBS know how we feel. Show support with Cook and Vangsness, post this on their Facebook wall:

"Hi!

I am a major fan of several of your shows. But, as a female fan I am extremely disappointed when I hear how your female actresses are treated, that they are far from recieving equal pay as male counterparts with the same screen time. I really think you should be ashamed of yourself, what message are you sending out, in 2013? Remember that there are a LOT of women watching your shows, and if we all boycotted - trust me, you would notice in the ratings. So show some respect both to viewers and actresses, pay up!

I stand with Vangsness, Cook and the other actresses demanding their rightful pay. "

And upvote this post, so it won't disappear off the front page! We need to do this together if we want them to listen.

Wait, are you telling me that "equal pay" is still just a distant dream in the world of TV acting? Vangsness' character is probably the most beloved of all, and Cook is a major actress of the show! This is so unfair. Cook and Vangsness, know that as a female fan I have your back! You're fighting a battle of principality far bigger than just your own salaries.

I'd love to chalk it up to screentime and notoriety, but the network has an awful track record with negotiations for this show. And the discrepancy wasn't just a little. They were offered UNDER HALF of what any of the men were offered. And they finally got raises to bring them closer to the actors' earnings, but they will still get considerably less.

Let me get this straight, people think that someone who is in......say 50 out of 100 scenes in a show should get paid as much as one who is in 80 out of 100? Gibson is in many, many more scenes than Cook.

She was trying to get equal pay to Moore and Gubler. Gibson and Mantegna get paid more due to notoriety and what not. But Criminal Minds and other CBS shows are notorious for not paying their females the way that they do their males, notoriety or not. I guess in some ways it's a reflection to what we all have to deal with, since women still don't get paid as much as men for doing equal work. Anyway, that's what this show has always struggled with, and is in part why they've had a revolving door when it comes to females. I'm indifferent on Cook myself, most of the time I don't even like the character she plays, nor any of the other females outside of Garcia, but I think she was justified in wanting to get paid at the least on an even playing field as Gubler and Moore. It's supposed to be an ensemble cast. Personally, in her case, I never would have agreed to come back after the unceremonious way they fired her and reduced Paget Brewster's role.

Yes! I love Criminal Minds. One of the only shows I know that has been running for so long and still haven't gotten much worse. They should let Matthew Gray Gubler direct more episodes, because those are really great!

As if there was any chance they wouldn't sign, they get paid millions of dollars to play make believe. Do they realize they get paid more than real FBI Agents. When they complain about their salary it's a slap in the face to real Feds.

why is it so hard to understand that the whole situation was not about the money but about equality? both ladies have all the right to demand what they were asking for, they are not worse/less than their male counterparts.. and I find it very very ugly of CBS to pay the guys more than the ladies.. and yes, there actually was a chance that they wouldn't sign, one season A.J. Cook, and another season Paget Brewster did not sign.. they were sent off but had to be brought back (as their replacements sucked)..

Personally, I would rather see people paid to pretend to Federal Agents/Police Officers than being real ones. Pretend ones can't shoot me or tazer me. It's like Nina Dobrev being paid to be a vampire(?). That's all fine and good. I would however not like someone being paid to go around biting people for real.

That's a ridiculous and insane comparison. What they make is based on supply and demand, not on the relative worth of any other service-oriented professional, and to say that they somehow intend disrespect to the FBI is ludicrous. They should just settle for whatever the network offers because someone else they respect makes less? Does anyone do that EVER?

Plus, as far as I'm aware, it's not so much about the exact amount they are/were being paid, but the fact, that the men on the show get more than the women. I realise that inequality in women's and men's income is a problem pretty much everywhere, but that doesn't mean we should be ok with it. Go, AJ Cook and Kristen Vangsness!

Hahaha!! You're welcome!! The only reason I knew was because I had literally just read it in an article the day before when they were still discussing the contract negotiations for the others! :) Whoever wrote this segment should have added that as an afterfact so that people who didn't know wouldn't worry because there were a few others on here besides you who were expressing concern for him, too!

But.. where's Matthew Gray Gubler's signature.. Honestly, I'm glad they renewed it, but without Reid, that just aint workin.

I'm pretty sure I'd read in an article earlier that he was one of the one's who was already renewed up through the next season so he wasn't under any negotiations like much of the rest of the cast! Don't worry; he'll be back! :)

Maybe he'd already renewed his contract? I hope so, because I agree with you that the show just wouldn't work without Reid. Now, they need to sign Nicholas Brendon on as a regular, or at least, get him signed for multiple episodes. I love his character's interactions with Garcia.

The most shocking thing from this whole ordeal was the information that came out about Kristen and AJ not getting paid equally. I think it's a shame they didn't fully get what they wanted but I'm glad they appear to at least be getting closer salaries to the men on the show. In my mind the only actor who should be getting more is Gibson because he is technically the star and lead actor, all the rest are supporting. Now I just wonder whether this is similar on other CBS or network and cable shows.

remember when AJ and the other female (mind-blanking on her name...she is fake dead and I think in Paris) were off the show. Same reason as for the hold up on the contract. Major fan backlash so they brought back AJ for the rest of the season and the other woman for a few episodes

This is a joke comment right? You are intentionally making mistakes to show that the female characters aren't as appreciated...Right?

the comment above and below are just reminders that this isn't anything new and seems to be part of the contract negotiation. The AJ fans brought her back and maybe that is some leverage she can use to make more money. I think computing salaries is more complex then just number of scenes, gender, etc...

per wikipedia:
"Brewster had a long run with the show Criminal Minds, playing Emily Prentiss. However, during the show's sixth season she and A. J. Cook were released from their contracts by CBS in a cost-cutting move. In the end, owing to complaints from the fans, both she and Cook were rehired and kept for the following season."
