Crybaby of the Day: Deadliest Catch's Thom Beers

These crabs hate National Parks!

Usually when a nominee loses at an awards show, the only sign of discontent is that split-second of a fake smile as the winner's name is read and the picture-in-picture boxes showing the losers are still on the air. But not Deadliest Catch executive producer Thom Beers. He's upset his show lost and isn't afraid to let people know, cry afoul of the Emmys, and take cheap shots at the winner.

Deadliest Catch, a show I have nothing against, was deservedly nominated for Outstanding Nonfiction Series alongside Ken Burns' The National Parks: America's Best Idea, The American Experience, American Masters, Life, and Monty Python: Almost the Truth. But apparently it wasn't enough of an honor for Beers just to be nominated; he demands a trophy.

The National Parks: America's Best Idea, (full disclaimer) which I absolutely loved, won the award at the Creative Arts Emmy ceremony held the week before the Primetime Emmy Awards broadcast. A graceful loser would compliment the winner and go about his business, but not Beers.

"Once again, I lost to a PBS series!" Beers told Fancast. "I don't know what the hell my show is even doing in a category that basically every year is a PBS category. [The academy doesn't] recognize [Deadliest Catch] as a documentary but they put it in that category."

Beers may have a point there; there isn't any real home for docu-dramas in the current Emmy Awards format. But what happens when there is a docu-drama category and he loses that? Does he demand an Outstanding Docu-Drama About Crab Fishing category?

If Beers had stopped there, he might not have earned the Crybaby award, but he took some pretty childish shots at the winner.

"To lose to Ken Burns' Parks was an abomination," he said. "That was the most boring show Ken Burns ever made and when I think that my show should lose to the most boring, the dullest show Ken Burns has ever made, it's an abomination."

Well excuse me, your highness. Never mind that National Parks was lauded by critics upon its release.

Congratulations, Thom Beers. You can pick up your Crybaby award in the TV.com offices.

Deadliest Catch is amazing. Just because the creator of the show can't take a loss gracefully doesn't mean the show itself should be criticized.
