CW renews Supernatural, Smallville, more

Why this is just super!

More than a few people can let out a sigh of relief today, as The CW has renewed a half dozen of its staples. The early pick ups are not only a good sign that the shows will live on, but also the network. As the underappreciated stepchild to the major networks, the CW's unimpressive ratings made it a candidate to go belly up.

But that clearly isn't the case, as noted by the six renewals.

Leading the way is the (sort of) surprising pick up of Smallville, which will enter its ninth season. The current season was thought to be its last with the exodus of several key actors and producers, but the tale of young Superman will live on. And that problem of re-signing Tom Welling to return as Clark Kent? We're going to go ahead and guess that those negotiations worked out well for both sides.

Smallville's Thursday night partner Supernatural will also come back, riding ratings growth to a fifth season. While not really in danger of being canceled, stranger things have happened at The CW.

The no-brainer of the bunch was Gossip Girl, which is the network's most talked-about series (though not most-watched). With its unimpressive ratings, Gossip Girl proves that all it takes is a perfect concentration on a specific demographic to keep revenue coming in and a show on the air. Also getting a return ticket was One Tree Hill.

90210 will be back for a sophomore season, but there is still concern for its fellow freshman Privileged, which remains in limbo (the show's season finale is tonight).

And finally, America's Next Top Model will return for cycles 13 and 14.

Also missing from the list, and we don't think this is a mistake, is 13 Fear is Real.

Smallville fans--sound off! And Privileged fans, let's hear why you think the show should stick around.

One Tree Hill is my all time fave, I'm so happy they're coming back. As for Smallville, it's not my cup of tea and I actually liked Priviledged but I don't see much longevity in it. The lead can get quite annoying.

Oh thank you CW! you make me so happy right now. I have been so gutted by the cancellation frenzy going on tvland that I almost lost hope altogether. Now I know poor little CW is just not making the grade when it comes to comparison, but really, television community, no one could possibly ever voluntarily give up J Ack!And although it's a little surprising about Smallville, it has rated top for how many months on CW (including when it was playing repeats against the other new eps).. so yay for the return.ok that's all!

I'm so glad that Supernatural is back! But then again, the CW would have to be crazy to cancel a show that good :)

I am also glad that Smallville and Supernatural are coming back. These 2 show I have been watching from the beginning.

  • rabbiepower

I am so glad that 90210 is being picked up for a 2nd season. Even though the only real reason I watch it is to see the continuing saga of Kelly, Brenda, and now Donna from the original series. Who will show up next season? Maybe Brandon, David, or maybe even Dylan. Who knows anything can happen in this zip code.

I love supernatural and Smallville, I can't wait for them to Be aired!!!

  • Shysty127

I mean how bad could a ninth season of Smallville be, its not as if they killed off Superman archenemy, made his past and future love interests far different then their comic counterparts, or given almost everyone whose ever been on the show a power at one time or another... wait you mean they did all that... guess it has a chance of sucking then

I'm just happy that Supernatural is coming back!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YAY for SUPERNATURAL!! Seriously it is my absolute favorite show and the only show I watch on the CW. They would have been stupid to cancel it, but you never can tell with the CW. But honestly they need to promote Supernatural a little bit more! This show rocks and I hardly ever hear anything about it! Not cool.

I like Smallville but seriously, 9 seasons? They should have ended at Season 6!

  • BenoitFan989

Personally I wouldnt have minded if Smallville ended now. It would have been a good ending. But I guess they have some more ideas. Yea I will miss the show when its gone, but not as much as I will when Nip/Tuck ends.

  • hitsuin

Supernatural I can understand but Smallville??? Really???? Firefly, Angel, Stargate, Stargate Atlantis, Sliders (Yeah, I'll mention that) and now Kyle XY but Smallville is still on? How is this? Even with scenes like Lana being as powerful and fast as clark via "an armor skin". She looked so happy :p How long can it going to stay pre-superman for? I'm okay with it but if this show is going to continue, it really has to step its game up. Its not fair on other shows.

  • KazzGirl

Love Supernatural. But I have heard the guys may not be here for very many seasons anyway. The goss I have read says that the show is more than likely only another two seasons long. That is sad!!!!

I'm glad to see Smallville coming back, even though the episodes are getting less and less enjoyable by the week. Without Rosenbaum or Kreuk there, it's really just losing it's flair and all the goodness that made me start to watch it back in 2001.

Supernatural is the only show I watch on the CW. I love the show. It's my all time favorite show. I can't believe it's going to be the last season. I don't know what I'm going to do on Thursday nights when the show ends.

So CW what happens to Everybody hates Chris & The Game? The two shows that you refuse to promote much like the long missed Veronica Mars & even Supernatural went through last year?
Are you ready to turn your back on another segment of the population that hates Gossip Girl?

Cra2ywolf, my post was to all the people that were bashing smallville not the other people who didnt say anything bad about the show. Everyone has their own taste's and opinion's as do I. The truth is that smallville has been the staple of the network. In the eleven years UPN and the WB were on the air, the two networks lost a combined $2 billion. So it is safe to say if smallville and a couple other shows werent successful there wouldnt be a cw and newer shows like supernatural and one tree hill.

  • GemiSantana

Finally some good news, Mostly because Smallville is going for a 9th season & Supernatural is going for a 5th season.

  • cra2ywolf

Awesome that Supernatural is going for another season. Do not watch the other shows but they all have lots of fans that consider them great. At least some fans here are more objective and mature in response to others. For example, I do not care for Smallville for my own reasons which does not reduce the quality of the show for its fans. The same is true for Supernatural which holds its own with the viewers. So posting that "If it wasnt for smallville all you haters wouldnt have your crappy shows. Although supernatural is a decent show I could care less about it and wouldn't watch it week in and week out" isn't a constructive response. They all have qualities that make them great shows for fans.

I don't really think the renewal for OTH was good idea with Hilary and CMM leaving.

I'm glad to see Supernatural will carry on the fight, it's a good show that could have been easily dismissed during it's 1st season but proved otherwise. As for Smallville, there is no particular reason that the show should fold-up, there are decades worth of stories and characters to draw from in the comicbook/novel world, and I would hope that the focus on quality stories be emphasized over finishing out contracts and protracted love triangles/pining away. Smallville may need to leave its namesake behind and focus on adult Clark finding himself in the world, not just his small town roots . . travel, meet more of his future friends and foes, and stop using the social crutches of the last few seasons. Those are my two shows of interest on the CW, so at least one more long season each.moreless

With the cast dropping like flies, I'm not sure the Smallville renewal was the best idea :? But I do know Privlieged should be renewed, that show rocks! It's got a tempo and flavor like Gilmore Girls only better, I love it!

Good news on 'Smallville'. I had seen a report that pro wrestler Matt Morgan, at 6'10'', has been a possible target to play Doomsday next season, and hopefully Sam Witmer is back in some way as well. Bringing Lex back would be nice, bald cap or not for Mr. Rosenbaum. Fantastic news!
