David E. Kelley is king of NBC's court(room drama)

Another year, another David E. Kelley television show. The prolific producer, whose name appears on the credits of Boston Legal, Ally McBeal, Boston Public, and The Practice, is back at it again with a new project that's right down his alley.

The magnificent David E. Kelley with
Emmy stealer James Spader.

NBC outbid all other suitors for Kelley's latest creation and has given the untitled drama a series commitment, according to Variety. Unlike most everyone else, Kelley is most comfortable in the courtroom, and the new show will include gavel pounding, objecting, and probably some steamy lawyer-on-lawyer-on-bailiff-on-judge action.

The hour-long drama will focus on a father and daughter who just so happen to be...yes, lawyers. What else would David E. Kelley make them? Further details on the show are still under wraps.

NBC ponied up the money, and with good reason. The network is feeling the heat of an unproductive season so far, with new shows (Knight Rider, Kath & Kim) and one-time-promising returning shows (Heroes, Chuck) underperforming. Kelley is a bona fide hit-maker, and NBC is in dire need of a steady hit.

Kelley is currently working on Boston Legal, which he rescued from possible cancellation by agreeing to give up the rights to another show he was grooming: ABC's strongest new entry, Life on Mars.
