Dead Pool 2012: See Our Editors' Picks

With the second annual TV.com Dead Pool in full swing—despite the networks not cooperating and only canceling two shows so far—it's time for your favorite part of the entire competition: the opportunity to point and laugh at our editorial staff for being so incredibly stupid with their picks. This is serious business, because the office winner gets a Kit-Kat bar and a pack of new highlighters!

So without further ado, here are the Dead Pool lists for most of our editorial staffers (minus the ones who forgot to fill out their entries on time shame on them!), ready for ridicule!

Note: In lists below, the first five shows from left to right are the ones marked for death, and the sixth is the tiebreaker. For example, Cory selected The Mindy Project as his tiebreaker.

* A few of you have inquired about how the tiebreaker works—we apologize for not making that clear from the get-go, and we've posted an explanation over at Dead Pool HQ. In the meantime, tiebreakers don't currently affect anyone's score: We'll only use them if we need to, at the end of the game. However, some tiebreakers are better choices than others. For example, The Mindy Project, Ben and Kate, and Arrow were all picked up after two episodes, so they are currently the best tiebreakers you can have (there are no tiebreakers for the tiebreakers). Revolution, Vegas, and Elementary were all picked up after three episodes, so they are currently the second-best tiebreakers you can have.

Looks like pretty much everyone got screwed over by the Neighbours, both staffers and posters alike! There's always one of those out there.

Whoa that's awesome that Tim and Price both picked Beauty and the Beast just like meee! :D What's with everyone betting on the Mindy Project? You guys are weird. Kudos to whomever else thought it would flop...as we SHOULD have been RIGHT!

Aahahhah, you editors suck!! :)

Still waiting for guys with kids and neighbors to get cancelled

Jen is the closest to my list, identical except for her choice of Beauty and the Beast over my choice of Made in Jersey. YEAH Trolio, WHAT?!? ;-) Seriously though, the CW never cancels nuthin' before the first paid-for episode run which usually means a 13-ep season, which is why I had removed B&TB from my list about halfway through the entry period. On the other hand, NBC being so unpredictable I pulled Animal Practice from my list (that and it's actually kinda funny) but left the expensive Chicago Fire.

I'm still flummoxed that Fox hasn't canceled The Mob Doctor (for abundantly obvious reasons) and ABC hasn't canned The Neighbors seeing as it's the worst-performing scripted show in the network's library and seems expensive with such a large cast.

I'm a +8 thanx to Animal Practice, yay!

On Earth-2, I am dominating this competition.

I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt and assuming you're making a DC reference.

Tim, Price... is Noel was making a reference to the Antonio Sabato Jr show from the 90s... you know what to do.

Totally a DC reference. I promise.

But now I'm curious. What happens if I were to reference the short-lived NBC sci-fi series?
Reply
Flag
I am so confused by New 52 pulling a "Crisis" and collapsing the multiverse, then having a pair of Earth-2 books. Oh, but since you are in contact with your Earth 2 guy, ask him "with Superman dead there, was there ever a Smallville TV show?" ;-)

TV Earth-2, not DC Earth-2. In TV Earth-2, Smallvile got cancelled after 13 episodes and Birds of Prey ran for 10 seasons. ;)

And don't get me started on the New 52 continuity things. Really, just don't. (Bruce Wayne has gone through 4 Robins in 5ish years? Damian's 11? And now Tim Drake was never a Robin (according to one book) but was also a Robin (according to another?) GAH.)

I have:

Made in Jersey (11)

The New Normal (9, I still say it'll get canceled before the end of this list.)

The Neighbors (9)

Guys with Kids (9)

The Mob Doctor (9)

Tiebreaker: Go On. (Correct.)

I think I had Animal Practice on the list before it aired after the Olympics, at which point I figured they'd wait until the end of the order before canceling it. So I removed it from the list.

Just out of curiosity, how many users have made a Dead Pool selection? I just want to know because I think it's interesting to think about how many of those have succeeded in making correct predictions.

Looking at the editor's picks, you're not doing that great so far. Last year every single one of you had three of four correct picks. But this year has been completely different from last year (The Playboy Club, Charlie's Angels, H8R...). Looking at this year's picks, there are still many chances for you to rack up points.

wow i was expecting something more , bigger scores at least but sseing those picks i mean really, Vegas for cancelation or Nashville.

Seriously Price, first you praise The Inbetweeners, you pick Revolution and Vegas for your cancellation picks, AND you chose Mob Doctor (YES Mob Doctor!!!) as the show that's gonna be first show that's going to be picked up for the entire season, despite its absymal ratings from the start (and that was in September, when we could still change our lineup). Whatever you've been smoking lately, Price, I want some of it.

I still like The Inbetweeners, and both Revolution and Vegas were extremely expensive bores on par with Alcatraz and Terra Nova. They've turned out to be hits, but choosing them for cancellation was not unreasonable. As for the tiebreaker, I mistakenly thought I was choosing another show to be cancelled. That was my bad.

Oh Price, poor poor Mr. Peterson (not the Late Late Show one), I'm afraid you're not going to be living that one down anytime soon. :-P

Revolution seemed like a likely cancellation to a lot of us. It was hard to predict that the same premise that makes people scream that it doesn't make sense, also makes people ignore the bad writing. There's also the fact that shows like Flash Forward and The Event didn't make it to a second season.
Reply
Flag
Beauty and the Beast is there too. If Price is such a CW fan, why doesn't he know the CW ALWAYS keeps its dramas going at least to the end of their first season, even if their ratings are the worst in TV history?
Reply
Flag
Ugh I totally forgot about THAT. -.- You're right, B&TB will get canceled most likely, but yeah probably not until the end of the first season. Ugh.

I'm admittedly not much of an academic. I mostly just thought it was too terrible even for the CW.
Reply

Like H8R? Thank god they took that monstrosity off after a few episodes. Shame that they're not doing the same for BATB.
Reply
Flag
Now did the tv.com staff make their pics because they didn't like the shows personally or because they just thought for some reason they just wouldn't do well?
Reply
Flag
Staff
In my case: Completely based on thinking they wouldn't do well. I hadn't seen any episodes when I selected my shows.

As for not liking: I find New Normal to be sort of awful in that Ryan Murphy way, so blah, and Guys With Kids is...bland, but inoffensive (perfectly in keeping with NBC's desire to go broad). I haven't watched Partners or Neighbors (no interest).

And I honestly thought that CBS would've renewed Elementary after the second episode. Sigh.

A few notes

Guys with Kids : I can't believe that some of the staff choose this one ,especially Tim, I guess he didn't follow his own advices

"While the general rule of thumb should be "bad shows will get canceled first," that's not always the case."

"Don't forget to consider the individual networks!"

Let's not forget Fallon and NBC relationship, SNL (1998-2004), Late Night with Jimmy Fallon(since 2009) plus it was announced early september that Jimmy Fallon's production company has sold 2 more projects to NBC.

There's also the fact that both 30 Rock and The Office are on their finale season leaving 2 spots to fill.

I'm pretty sure that NBC will announce the back 9 for GWK by the end of the week.

The Neighbors: Almost everybody picked this one and at first I admitted it was on my list but after the premiere I had a doubt "what if it didn't dive that much?" and so I removed it from my finale list and now regarding the ratings for the show , I'm glad that I did it!

Mob Doctor: I surprised this show is still on the air! Quick Question, let's suppose FOX decide to air all 13 episodes but to split the season in 2, 7 episodes now ( they could have holiday specials in december) and the rest (6 episodes) are burned off during the spring , will it counted as 6 points ?

Which TV.com editorial staffer's picks are closest to yours? Well my picks are

MADE IN JERSEY (CBS, Fri 9pm) cancelled 10/10 , +11 points

ANIMAL PRACTICE (NBC,Wed 8pm) canceled 10/18 ,+8 points

PARTNERS (CBS,Mon 8:30pm)

LAST RESORT (ABC,Thur 8pm)

MOB DOCTOR (FOX, Mon 9pm)

Tiebreaker:

GO ON (NBC, Tues 9pm)

So no one really! Well Walter and I shared Partners and The Mob Doctor.

"There's also the fact that both 30 Rock and The Office are on their finale season leaving 2 spots to fill."

I'm not convinced that this matters much, since NBC has such an absurd number of comedies already. I would say that they have more than 2 too many. But Up all night looks dead too, and Animal practice got cancelled. So I think at least 4 comedies won't come back, and maybe that's enough.

Guys with kids, Animal practice (cancelled), The office (final season), 30 Rock (final season), Up all night (very low ratings), Parks & Recreation, Parenthood, The new normal, Go On...and on October 19th (whenever that is) Community.

Wow, looks like nearly everyone on the TV.com staff loves The Mindy Project.

It appears Tim has the closest Dead Pool picks as mine, with 3 plus the tie-breaker being the same: The Neighbors, Guys With Kids, and The Mob Doctor... then The Mindy Project. The difference is that I chose Made in Jersey and Animal Practice =)

Oh, and good to hear about the tie-breakers.
Reply
Flag
Yes, I picked the best tiebreaker! Now if only the networks would start chopping off dead weight.
Reply

Tim and I have the exact same dead pool, including the tiebreaker. It's weird and cool at the same time.

I guess I'm not the only one who thought, "Hmmm, a show about a family moving into a new neighborhood where everybody is an alien? That'll NEVER last!" That damn show just HAD to be kinda funny.

Also, When the hell is The Mob Doctor going to be cancelled?!

Also (#2), Price, care to explain the reasoning behind your tie-breaker selection? Even Walter's is better than yours.
Reply
Flag
I think The Mindy Project should be a better tiebreaker, because it not only got picked up, it got 2 more episodes tacked on.

And I'm not just saying that because it was my tiebreaker...
Reply
Flag
Mine were mostly like Tim's, though I threw "Made In Jersey" in there to be sure. Totally messed up my tie-breaker guess, though.
Reply
Flag
Nice, I'm beating all of you. Got Animal Practice and Made In Jersey, and Vegas was my tie-breaker, so I'm looking great so far.

Still waiting on The Mob Doctor, Guys With Kids, and 666 Park Ave to get axed. The first two I'm pretty confidant, the last one seems to be doing ok, wouldn't be surprised either way.

666 is the lowest rated drama on ABC. The bottom 3 were Private Practice, Last Resort and 666 Park Avenue. But PP just got cancelled and LR is doing better than 666. Tvbythenumbers.com lists both LR and 666 as "certain cancellation", but I still have some (tiny) hope that LR will get a full season.
