Dead Pool HQ: Staff Picks, Updated Ratings, and Commentary

Latest Updates: Tuesday, November 29

It's been a quiet month in terms of cancellations, but the networks have picked up the pace in the last week or so and put a lot of actors and writers and crewmen out of business by ending Prime Suspect, Man Up, and Pan Am. While none of those shows are technically officially canceled because the networks are trying to save face, they won't be receiving new-episode orders, either. Real-world translation: They're canceled.

Here's the updated leaderboard: Dead Pool Score Sheet as of November 29 (PDF file)

I'm just about ready to etch Edward_nigma and SuperSonic922's names onto the trophy, as only a miracle super-quick cancellation of I Hate My Teenage Daughter (which debuts tomorrow) could shake things up at this point. If that comedy is canceled within its first three episodes, musik_addict will claim victory.

In the staff picks section, Grimm's renewal killed me, leaving me with a grand total of 37 points—good enough to rank in the top 20 overall. But it looks like Louis is poised to win office bragging rights as soon as Allen Gregory gets the axe.

And because it's still relevant, here's the pie graph of the number of people who selected each show:

Leaderboard & Scoresheet

All the entries, listed by username, can be seen here (in PDF format). A lot of you sent in entries WITHOUT usernames, and I didn't want to post your real names or email addresses for all the freaks on the internet to see. If you forgot to send in your username and want to be listed, send an email to mailbag@tv.com from the same email address you used to enter and include your username. You'll notice there are also some missing tiebreakers, so the same rules apply: If you want to get a tiebreaker in, email it to us! Just don't be a cheater and try to select a show that's already been picked up, obviously. There are also people who ignored the rules and selected New Girl as their tiebreaker *after* it had been picked up for a full season. Those entries are denoted with an asterisk (as in New Girl*). Shame on you! If you want to select an alternative tiebreak, I suppose I'll allow it, but you're really pushing it.

(Note: A spreadsheet error gave me an incorrect leaderboard. Many people did not get credit for Free Agents. It should be fixed now.)

Latest Updates: Thursday, October 13

[UPDATE] Wow, I just went in and fixed up the scores and found a ton of errors. Let's just pretend those never happened. I will blame Google because the company is a faceless entity that's easily scapegoated. But it's all good now, and I mean it this time. I think.

The CW made a bunch of decisions yesterday and picked up all three of its new dramas, Ringer, The Secret Circle, and, yes, Hart of Dixie. Wow! Hart of Dixie? Incredible. Mr. and Mrs. Bilson must be so proud of their fake heart-surgeon daughter.

The Hart of Dixie pickup was the most problematic for the Dead Pool as more than 60 people have it on their lists. Tough luck for Mcviewer, who was tied for first until his final pick knocked him down by two points. I'm sure he/she will never look at Rachel Bilson the same way and has a new hatred of Alabama.

Tonight is a big night for Charlie's Angels. In fact, I think you may see a cancellation announcement tomorrow after tonight's numbers come in. [UPDATE #2: And here it is!]

Because there have been no cancellations, but three pickups, since the last update, the leaderboard has only seen people drop. Here's the latest rundown, with errors fixed:

And because it's still relevant, here's the pie graph of the number of people who selected each show:

Latest Updates: Monday, October 10

[UPDATE] Spreadsheet error! The leaderboard is messed up as many of you have pointed out. I'm fixing it!

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a leaderboard! The cancellations of H8R and How to Be a Gentleman really separated the wheat from the chaff, and there's currently a nine-way tie for first place among TV.com users and our own Louis Peitzman. Congrats to shartman63, Mcviewer, CJager1, SamWalker11, jcila, Edward_nigma, SkyHigh25 and someone who didn't provide us with his TV.com username. You're all tied with 39 points, which is currently the highest possible score. Four of you even selected Charlie's Angels as your fifth pick, so if that axe falls soon (and it could), this game will be all about the tiebreak.

But there's still hope for the rest of you, because several new series have yet to debut—including popular Dead Pool picks Grimm, Man Up, and Last Man Standing.

I've listed the top 20 players below in the "Leaderboard" section, but to see the whole score sheet, including where you stand and who picked what, head here: Dead Pool Score Sheet as of October 10 (PDF file)

And because it's still relevant, here's the pie graph of the number of people who selected each show:

Unless Grimm somehow gets canceled REALLY early, I don't think I stand a shot of winning this thing.

Coridally yours,
Timbo

Latest Updates: Tuesday, October 18

A busy end of the week and weekend meant a slow update for the Dead Pool, and I apologize. Someone should just cancel me for being a bad Dead Pool commissioner! Except I make the rules around here, so I'm giving myself a 3-year extension worth 2.5 million a year. This is America, where mediocrity is rewarded!

ABC was busy late last week, canceling Charlie's Angels and picking up Suburgatory and Revenge. That makes five cancellations on the year, and four people out there had all five. Congratulations! You four are like that cat in old folks' homes that sleeps next to people before they die, and you creep all of us out with your ability to see death. Either that or you just have impeccable taste. Potato, po-tah-to, I guess. By the way, if anyone out there actually says po-tah-toe, you're wrong. Stop it.

Here's the updated leaderboard: Dead Pool Score Sheet as of October 18 (PDF file)

Right now Edward_nigma and SuperSonic922 are sharing the lead because shartman63's tiebreaker was selected after New Girl was already picked up. Tsk, tsk. There's still hope for the rest that can taste the lead, as Once Upon a Time, Allen Gregory, and Man Up have yet to air and a few of you have selected those shows. But you'll need a quick cancellation to jump into first. I will say this: they all look horrible, so there's hope.

As for what's in danger of getting canceled next, Pan Am and Prime Suspect are in the most danger, but NBC really doesn't want to cancel the latter. I don't see either of these going anywhere for a few weeks.

In the staff picks section, I've managed to jump into a tie for the lead thanks to Charlie's Angels, which should have been canceled a long time ago. Louis still has Allen Gregory and I have Grimm, and Ilana, Seth, Price, and Walter are being sneaky in the back with a few shows still lingering. This could go down to the wire.

Latest Updates: Thursday, October 6

Down goes another! Free Agents was canceled today after just four episodes, making it worth 9 points. I remember slaving away and putting in a lot of entries that had both Free Agents and The Playboy Club, so I'll take a look at the numbers soon and see how many people are tied for first place. I think the pack will really start to separate once a third show gets canceled.

Speaking of third show to get canceled, what do you think it will be? H8R doesn't have the numbers, but let's not forget that it costs $42 per episode to make. I've got my eye on Charlie's Angels, which airs tonight. I'm guessing it will put up a 1.2 rating or so, which may be enough to give it one more week. If the slide continues (which it will—have you seen the show?), it's a goner. I think people are talking about Ringer too much for it to be canceled, but Hart of Dixie better watch its back. It's been steady with back-to-back weeks of a 0.8 rating, but there's not nearly as much chatter about it. Prime Suspect is also a... wait for it... prime suspect, but NBC likes the show enough to let it stick around. I think it's safe for a few weeks.

Here's a pie graph of the number of people who selected each show:

Dead Pool Chart TV.com

I'm not going to brag about being two-for-two, but let's face it, I'm awesome.

Best of luck!

Friends Forever, Timothy

Previous Updates:Tuesday, October 3

All hail the Axe of Cancellation! Tremble in its presence! NBC struck first today, canceling The Playboy Club after just three episodes. That means it's a 10-pointer (13 - 3 = 10) for everyone who chose it—all 164 of you. That's more than half the entries! You guys really hated The Playboy Club! The period drama was by far the most-selected show; Free Agents came in second at 139, followed by Charlie's Angels at 134.

Here's a pie graph of the number of people who selected each show:

The Playboy Club NBC preview

Whoever was the lone person to select The X Factor, I salute you!

Also in the news today were NBC's other orders of business: full-season pickups for Up All Night and Whitney. If you picked either of those shows to be canceled, it doesn't necessarily mean you're out of the contest but... ahhh who am I kidding?! You're done! Whitney's pickup was particularly damaging, as 110 of you thought NBC would come to its senses and cancel the show. But if you ask me, NBC didn't want to burn bridges with Whitney Cummings, who (for some reason I don't understand) is very much in-demand right now.

Keep watching that axe!

Your pal, Tim

Previous Updates: Monday, October 2

Registration is CLOSED for this year's Dead Pool—thanks to all of you who've entered! I just wanted to let you know that we're still sorting through all the entries. We've got around three hundred participants, which means a lot of you are morbidly fascinated by other people's failures. Shame on you!

A couple bits of news to discuss, and not good news for those of you who picked NBC shows to bite the dust. NBC president Bob Greenblatt said he wants to give his shows a chance to find an audience, so there will be no quick pulls of the trigger on his part. It makes sense, too. With the new Comcast management in place, they probably don't want to start with the image of being a network that cancels shows after a few episodes. That said, The Playboy Club and Free Agents stink and are performing horribly. If I were Greenblatt I would start swinging the axe just to show everyone I mean business. Heck, I'd cancel Sunday Night Football just so everyone feels like they are in danger. I like to be feared.

Pan Am lost a big chunk of its audience in its second episode. Guess the numbers from the premiere episode came from curious people who chose not to stick around. I don't think it's in danger yet, though. Whitney needs to put up solid ratings this week. It's such a glaring blemish on NBC's comedy block that the network has to be taking notice. Ditto for Charlie's Angels, which is nothing short of a disaster for ABC. Hart of Dixie also needs to pick things up STAT! That's doctor-speak, not that Rachel Bilson would know. Oh, and if you picked Prime Suspect, you should know that NBC sold it to 30 international territories, which is likely to give it a longer leash than usual.

Look for the final scoresheet tomorrow and, time permitting, some pretty graphs. I'm working as fast as I can!

Love,
Tim

Previous Updates: Thursday, September 29

You've got a little more than one day left to enter the TV.com Dead Pool, and we have more than 250 entries so far. If you haven't yet entered but would like to, now's the time to read the Dead Pool rules and regulations and submit your entry. Entries will be accepted until 11:59pm PT on Friday night (September 30, 2011).

For those of you who've already entered, you'll want to bookmark this page and keep checking back throughout the season. I'll continue to update the ratings for all the new shows (listed below), keep a running tally of your scores, and add commentary on anything related to the Dead Pool.

In case you haven't yet seen the news, Fox made the season's first big move yesterday by picking up New Girl for a full season. If you already selected New Girl as your tiebreaker, you'll be in good shape if the game come down to the wire.

I've also included the TV.com staff entries for all of you to see and laugh at. And so none of you can call bogus on any of our picks. That means you, @beowulf579!

WHY?! Why would they cancel "Man Up"?? It was one of the funniest shows I've ever seen. And yet they keep "Up All Night", "Whitney", and "Two Broke Girls"? It's not fair. I wish I could give a piece of my mind to whoever is making some of the cancellations lately.

While I saw no similarity to the excellent British version, (that ran for many seasons), I can't believe they cancelled Prime Suspect. The characters are starting to gel and viewers are starting to care a bit about them. Why not at least give them a chance to catch on. Perhaps until the spring?

I would suggest that the points each person gets be added to one's Level score, although I don't know if there's a way of doing that.

Prime Suspect is my favorite show ! (I even like the hat !) I think the cast is wonderful, especially Maria Bello. I also like Pan Am. I sure hope they keep their hands off of Unforgettable, Person Of Interest, Blue Bloods, and A Good Man. Just when I get involved in a new show, they cancel it ! I'm still mad about The Chicago Code, Detroit 187, and "V" . How can they keep all this reality crap on the air, and cancel the shows that have a good story ????

Wow I had completely forgotten about this...can't believe I'm one of the top people! This must mean I should become a programming exec. ;-) P.S. Thanks for holding this competition for us!

Out of all those cancellations the only one I'll miss is Prime Suspect. I guess viewers still have a hard time watching a woman lead who isn't an airhead. Hey NBC, try moving it away from opposite Person of Interest and The Mentalist to one of your weaker nights and see how it does there (which, since it's NBC, can be any other night.)

Sorry, don't agree. It was years out of date. Men putting women cops down - hey that was the 70s. Angie Dickinson in Police Woman - and the original British Prime Suspect was just so much better.

I think it sucks that "Pan Am" is next to be cancelled. I enjoyed watching it every Sunday night. Yet, they keep "New Girl". Mindblowing how they decide on what is worth keeping on TV.
Reply
Flag
Every network is different. For example, "Pam Am" is on ABC, whereas "New Girl" airs on Fox. Also, how can you compare an hour-long drama to a sitcom? And, ABC usually has pretty high standards, whereas Fox's ratings are usually low, so "New Girl" bringing in 5-6 million viewers a week is a success story.

If Allen Gregory was on cable you'd all be going on and on about how brilliant it is and you all know it.

My new rule of thumb:

In order for me to watch a new show, It must survive at least 2 seasons with a third season on-air and decent ratings.

Otherwise its not worth my time because networks cancel stuff so fast, its like trend.
Reply
Flag
To be fair, it's probably that line of thinking among many TV viewers that helps cause some good new shows to have bad ratings and therefore, unable to be picked up or renewed.
Reply
Flag
I see Revenge on the pick up list? True? Is it now safe to watch it? I hate to watch a series and have them pull the plug in the middle. Did that to The Nine and I never forgave ABC for that.

I'll really miss Prime Suspect. The characters are great, realistic and have interesting interaction. There seems to be a depth to the characters and now they won't be able to explore or tell us those stories. It was more than a crime drama.

Yahooo! The CW Announces 2012 Midseason Schedule [tvbn]

ummm ... let's see ...

"New reality series REMODELED, premiering Wednesday, January 18, (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET), centers around modeling industry veteran Paul Fisher as he tries to bring together hundreds of small agencies around the world in a new venture called The Network."

ohhhh! that looks so interesting please continue ! ^^

"The Network will give Paul the leverage to change the industry from the inside out. He has two missions: to make sure agents in small towns no longer get screwed, and to empower models to take control of their careers and lead healthier lives."

Wooooooooooowwwwww! I must write this on my agenda !

And on a TOTALLY UNRELATED note , there's gonna be a dead pool for midseason shows ? right ?

It looks like Once Upon A Time is a hit. Pan AM however will probably quietly disappear over Christmas, especially since OUaT's success makes Pan AM expendable. But it's aired too many episodes to be of much help to those who picked it.

The dead pool is probably over for a lot of people since the fate of 14/27 shows is known but I'm still in the dark and I just can't wait for my final score , I don't have any chance of winning but just out of curiosity ! I hate my teenage daughter will be interesting since it was originally scheduled on Wednesday after a 90 minutes X-Factor but now X-Factor is under-performing and a 120 minutes X-Factor is on the horizon.

This pool is hilarious!! I wish I had known about it in the beginning, I would have loved being a part of it!!

I would have picked Whitney (and lost), Playboy Club and Charlies' Angels do go by the wayside early.

Reply

Not nit-picking, especially since it loses me another 2 points, but Suburgatory hasn't been subtracted yet for those who put it in their deadpools. Or was it not picked up? I thought it was.
Reply
Flag
So this is a pool for what will get cancelled? I find it rude - if shows are already picked up they are "popular" I guess, so voting for the "losers" to lose seems like shooting fish in a barrel. Plus I don't get why Whitney and Free Agents appear to have a similar amount of votes, but Whitney was renewed (yuck) and Free Agents was cancelled. This is a pretty horrendous new show season as it is anyway.

It just a way for people to be interested in crappy shows. If it wasn't for the Dead Pool nobody would ever care about shows like Whitney.

Can we just put NBC 10o'clock spot in the Dead Pool. Prime Suspect only got 2.9 million viewers. That's four Mondays in a row that NBC came in dead last.
Reply
Flag
I'm thinking The Secret Circle will...come unhooked and wind up cancelled.
Reply

Pan AM might be in trouble but it hasn't reached the tipping point yet. It's still got at least an episode or two before it gets to that point. Charlie's Angels fate should be clear by Friday.

I'm really interested in seeing how Terra Nova fared yesterday. It's looking as if this show might not make it past a year, let alone Christmas. The ratings are decent but not enough to justify the budget.

A lot of people picked Grimm because it had a bad slot but it could get moved to Mondays at 10pm. Although if NBC does give it the Friday slot then they would be doing so knowing it would get bad ratings and might keep it around over the holidays. Of course they could just move their talent show to 9pm and give Chuck it's old Monday timeslot.

I think anyone who is hoping for Whitney to get cancelled should forget it. Even if it does it's sure at this point to last at least 5 episodes. And with the competition as it is, only those shows getting at least 9 points are going to help.
