Derren Brown did it, but how?

Surely it had nothing to do with luck

He's openly admitted that his acts are just trickery, but last night we watched as Channel 4's illusionist seemed to predict the results of the National Lottery, live. Were our eyes deceiving us?

Surely if Derren Brown really knew what the outcome of last night's National Lottery draw would be, he wouldn't be sharing it with us. Wouldn't he be on a yacht somewhere, sunning himself whilst drinking champagne? Of course he would. That's how we've all come to the rational conclusion that it can't be real, with his excuses for not showing the numbers beforehand or buying a ticket simply showmanship. He can't really have predicted the results live on TV.

Brown has fooled us before, remember? Last year he said he could foresee the outcomes of forthcoming horse races, and to give him credit, he could, kind of. One lucky woman was guided into backing the winners, time and time again, but what Brown failed to tell us (until the very end, of course) was that he'd contacted just over seven and a half thousand people as part of his elaborate trick, and only showed the viewing public the one participant who'd found success. We felt cheated, but at least he told us how he did it -- something he promises to do with his lottery illusion too.

We've been racking our brains as to how he could have done it. Was it fibre optics, some sort of time lapse, number stickers on his fingers? Given the length of the show later this week to explain the trick, it must have been something much more subtle, but what? Brown will reveal all in a special follow-up show this Friday and our prediction (that's right, we're going to try our hand at this too) is that it's a mixture of statistics and clever camera work -- Hey, we didn't say it would be a good guess. How do you predict the truly random? See him in action below, and make up your own minds.
