Dexter: Ewwwwww!

This week's episode of Dexter was titled "Talk to the Hand," which, even though it's obviously supposed to refer to a severed hand, is still basically Level-1 punnery. Used ironically or not, that phrase is about as hacky as possible, so it's a truly fitting title for a Season 6 episode. Look, I'm kind of tired of pointing out that this season is terrible. I'm tired of it, and you're especially tired of it. Let's just accept it as fact and move on. What's interesting about "Talk to the Hand," however, was that this episode wasn't as terrible as I'd expected? The bar had been lowered significantly after the past two episodes, like lowered so low that we'd need one of those archaeology sonar cannons from the beginning of Jurassic Park just to find it. (The bar lies beneath velociraptor bones now.) Don't get me wrong, I still thought this was a terrible episode, but it was also pretty entertaining! It's like Dexter just sort of owned its badness and decided to go all True Blood on us. It had me laughing, in other words, and after the aggressively dumb snoozefest of recent weeks, I was pretty grateful.

Because WHAT??!

To be fair, this scene was a dream sequence, but still: After a nearly season-long series of therapy sessions, Deb's bossy psychiatrist suggested that perhaps the root of all Deb's problems is her romantic crush on her own adopted brother! Great session, doc! Even the knowledge that these two actors used to be married in real life didn't make this less idea less gross, and frankly, it was hilarious. What a weird thing for this show to do! For a series about a serial killer, Dexter's always been pretty conventional and generally unwilling to rock the boat too much with its character relationships. But this was really a whole other realm of craziness, which gave me a bit of hope about any other nutso brainstorms these writers might have in store for the finale. Nothing could possibly make up for wasting our time with the Gellar "twist" (or turning Dexter incompetent). But still: LOL!

Another admirable aspect of this episode: It dispatched with two important-seeming plot threads almost immediately—Batista's capture and the Wormwood gassing of Miami Metro. I'd assumed both would factor into the season finale endgame, so imagine my surprise when they were both resolved in the first half-hour. Anticlimactic, sure (and I sort of had my fingers crossed for a higher body count), but credit where credit's due: I expected both situations to be drawn out over several episodes and I'm now glad they weren't.

The episode began as the Miami Metro team (including active saboteur Dexter Morgan) investigated the bloody yacht Travis left behind last week. It wasn't long before someone noticed Batista had gone missing after looking into the suspect who was now dead at the crime scene. After Deb placed an angry call to Quinn asking where his partner might be, Quinn snapped into action and showed up at Travis's hideout only seconds before Travis intended to shoot Batista in the head. Was anyone else hoping Travis would actually do it? I know that's horrible, because it's not like Batista is the first character on my kill list, it's just that I was hoping something—ANYTHING—big would happen. Obviously Travis fled instead, but not before setting the carpet on fire (which I guess takes less time than pulling a trigger). Quinn burst in and rescued Batista, but it wouldn't be enough to solve their trust issues. Quinn had not been a very good partner lately.

Elsewhere, Travis decided it was time to GAS Miami Metro, so he sent that poor Christian zealot lady into the station (via Batista's security card) with a backpack full of deadly gas. It's a good thing Dexter had been Googling her dead husband just seconds earlier, because he then immediately recognized the mousy wife in the guy's wedding photos just as she'd activated her cache next to Deb. After pushing her into an interrogation room where she could vomit blood by her lonesome, Deb fell in love with her brother and then Homeland Security swooped in to take over what was now definitely a terrorism case.

Ugh, the homeland security subplot. Wasn't it so weird how Miami Metro disagreed about the terrorism angle? What, it's only terrorism when it's related to Islamic fundamentalism? If we're going to be honest, the ENTIRE Doomsday Killer plot was terrorism, since it was designed for psychological impact more than anything. So yeah, sorry, detectives, you're all a bunch of incompetent A-holes if you think an attempted GASSING wasn't terrorism. Somebody needs to call in Carrie Mathison so SHE can figure this shit out, because you're all awful.

Speaking of awful, LaGuerta got another promotion. This time it had to do with snitching on Matthews about his call girl incident. After he'd successfully pleaded his case to Deb, she agreed to stay mum on the subject, but lo and behold, someone else leaked the info and now LaGuerta has Matthews' job. Wasn't it straight-up stupid how he assumed Deb had been the leak when only weeks prior LaGuerta had BLACKMAILED Matthews about an earlier prostitution-related thing? Was he just an absolute moron for overlooking this connection? Miami Metro is literally the worst police department on TV, and now LaGuerta is fully in charge of it. Congratulations, Florida!

Speaking of Florida, how much did you love that the local news in Miami freely shows images of severed hands and satanic graffiti written in blood? After Dexter staged a fake tableau (featuring Gellar's severed hand) in order to enrage Travis, I was skeptical that it would ever be shown on daytime local news. But then I was like, "Oh, nevermind, it's Florida." Very plausible!

Oh, also, Louis is totally crazy now. First of all, he thanked Dexter for the harsh critique of his video game and then declared that he was ready to give up making video games and start doing it for real. Considering the video game offered the option to BE A SERIAL KILLER, I really hope Dexter took the hint. (Of course he didn't.) So anyway, next thing we knew, Louis was writing on the mannequin hand in Sharpie and mailing it to Dexter. So those of you commenters who speculated about Louis's possible villainy, how does it feel to SPOIL EVERYTHING FOR THE REST OF US?

Also, Travis is a great mural painter! Who wouldn't want this on their living room wall:

After the fake tableau incident, Travis was now completely fixated on killing Dexter and he darn near accomplished it at episode's end, when he captured a sarin-weakened Dexter, threw him in a gasoline-filled dinghy on the open ocean, and created a "Lake of Fire" tableau before speeding off without checking to see if Dexter was dead or not. Dexter was not dead, but he WAS floating out on the open ocean, which I GUESS is an interesting cliffhanger. (Fingers-crossed for a shark and/or water-ghost attack!)

This episode was by no means "good," but its willingness to surprise and/or get crazy definitely counted in its favor. Either way: Bring on the season finale. PLEASE.

RANDOM BLOOD SPLATTERS:

... Deb + Dexter: WTF?

... What was Louis scrawling on that mannequin hand?

... Are you happy about LaGuerta's promotion?

... Did you think it was irresponsible of Travis to feed a cat sorbet?

Seeing how Michael C. Hall was in a contract dispute up till a couple of weeks ago expect the season 6 finale to be a cliffhanger episode! and if your shocked about the Dexter / Debra storyline of this season, I would ask where the heck have you been for the 6 seasons, if you haven't seen that coming for a long time, you need to get your eyes checked!

Really Price?? You might want to read this back...in the mirror.

Better yet, just stick with what you are good at...the candy-coated, sugary fluff "New Girl". Maybe you'll get lucky and hold the winning bid at E-Bay on some of her used cotton garb !!

you are funny , you love the show so everyone have to love it ?

I really think that season is shitty , and I don't understant how people can love it , but I don't go insult them.

if we are harsh with the show , it's because we loved it !!! when you are a real fan of a show , you just don't stop watching like that when a season is bad , you hope that it will be back on the right tracks.

I have watched season 1 again this week end , and believe me it's so different.it is so obvious that everything was 50 times better back then.

the rythm was slower , the stories were better for every character , batista was interesting , laguerta was also more human , everything was more emotional and more realistic.

now the emotion is gone , and it's nothing but boring stories , predictable twists , and superficial moments

Why are you so redundant to the fact that you don't like season 6? WE GET IT! You think it's bad. But to the rest of us who enjoy the small twists and spins of Dexter why don't you give better opinions on the show. You wasted an enitre paragraph bitching.

Anyways, regarding the Dexter/Deb scenario, it's not going to happen for real. Deb will not "make a move" on Dexter, and he won't reciprocate.

His job entails recapping the episode with a large dose of what he thought about it as he watched. Where do all of you fans get off trying to censor his opinion? He's entitled to it. His job is NOT to summarize the episode in an unbiased way. He is a critic who reviews the show. By definition, he has to examine the show's nuts and bolts, its moving parts. You may certainly disagree, but asking for censored reviews and throwing tantrums aren't making your case.

The thing you have been doing this entire year with Dexter is ridiculous. Why are you so hellbent on giving a bad reputation to a perfectly good show? Sure some seasons are better and some less stellar, but Season 6 is much better than the two previous ones. All the characters are falling back into place, involved in the central plot, there's an exciting season villain, the actors are giving great performances, and the religious/apocalyptic theme is highly attractive. There are gruesome, imaginative murders, Dexter is getting back to his old self, what's the problem? We get that you don't like the show. SO QUIT WATCHING, QUIT WRITING!

I remember watching the first season and thinking there was definitely something not-so-normal going on between Debra and Dexter and I was actually pretty sure at some point something would happen between them. I'm not saying it's not gross, but seriously, this is a TV show about a serial murderer and psychopath. No matter how much you enjoy the character or the show, you can't deny that Dexter is insane, creepy and sick. So some so-called incest (they're not related by blood after all) wouldn't be that far-fetched. Their relationship was always very prone to all sorts of weird shit, they both have issues with their father, they're both insecure, they both have unhealthy ways of dealing with their problems, having them fall in love with their sibling would be easily explained psychologically. In the context of the series, I'd actually be curious to see how it would be handled and it might be interesting TV, even if it would be disturbing.

Basically what I'm saying is, this show is set in a world where the hero is a murderer, so incest shouldn't be any less normal.

I find it funny (maybe a bit infuriating?) that this site ruined the "Geller is not real" twist near the beginning of the season, when I probably could have gone a couple more weeks before I had figured it out. Yet this reviewer didn't see the Dexter-Deb scenario coming from a mile away? They were building it up for weeks and I was excited to see it all play out because it makes so much sense. Not a WTF in the slightest in my eyes.

This site didn't "ruin" anything. Speculation and spoilers are two completely different things. Speculation- an opinion/ guess that hasn't yet been proven or unproven. Alot of fans were speculating based on their own interpretation of clues while watching the show that Gellar wasn't real. If it had went the other way (Gellar being real) i wouldn't yell at you for guessing right. Spoilers on the other hand is having knowledge of a fact before others and forcing it upon them unexpectedly. Dare i say: don't be pissed because someone else guessed right.

Spit your dummy out (pacifier incase Google Translate doesn't pick up on that) This Season has been incredible, in my eyes. So you don't enjoy it? Fine. No need to cram opinion down out throats just write up the episode, offer your views and leave. Don't try and push the boat out on bad imagery like the bar being below the Velociraptor bones etc. to try and get your point across. Very disappointing read, I'm sorry I wasted my time.

This show is tumbling downhill fast. Seasons 1+4 are the standardbearers while 2+3 were bad and S5 somewhere in between. This season lost me when "Eddie Jimmy" was found dead in the freezer...seriously, Dexter against the guy from Orange County...is this supposed to be suspenseful?!?!?

Deb and Dexter is just uber-creepy and never should have been explored.

This season can only be saved by Dexter revealing his true self to Deb (I don't mean this as some weird sexual allegory) and even still it will only be sub-par.

No, regarding LaGuerta's promotion. Naturally LaGuerta gets promoted, she's a conniver. In season 2 remember when she sympathized with her new lady boss who appeared paranoid crazy over a relationship? All the while, LaGuerta was sleeping with the boss' man. That's cold calculation designed to get ahead anyway you can but appear totally innocent. Maybe I am wrong, but didn't she quit sleeping with the guy right before boss lady grew so distracted and incompetent the chief fired her and of course there's Maria, who got reinstated for being such a team player.

I have to disagree with the author of this article. I have enjoyed this season immensely. I have really enjoyed every season of Dexter. My least favorite was season 3. I disagree. The start of the current season was fine - not great but by no means bad. Then Dexter was given a new super power by the writers: stupidity.

Killing people in broad daylight, killing people within eyeshot of residential properties, sending video messages to Travis, calling the police from his mobile, praying to god, committing all manner of crimes and suspicious activities in full view of security cameras, sending a text message to one of his victims from somebody else's phone, not picking up on Louis' very obvious hint, almost getting killed by the tooth fairy and so on.

Not exactly clever...

In Deb's dream sequence, is it possible he kissed her on her chin, just below her lower lip, on purpose? Maybe, Deb is not crazy, but confused. Still absolutely gros, they didn't kiss lip-to-lip in her dream (look above-clearly on her chin and below her lower lip). It was also, a dream, which we all cannot fully recall when we awake; nor control, anyway! Who knows what we all dream and never remember;-)

Well the actors didn't kiss exactly on the lips yes, it's a cinema kiss, but I'm pretty sure it was supposed to be a real kiss in Deb's imagination... anyway, what you do in dreams doesn't necessary reflect things you want to do in real life!

An awesome and season saving finale would invlove the deaths of both LaGuerda and Travis. Deb becomes Captain and Dexter becomesa totally competent and totally bad-ass serial killer again. Television is television; not real-life, so bring on "Super DexterP once again.

Also, Serial killers don't get more smart as they age, look at the Green River Killer and all of the rest who got caught after killing so many. Give Dexter a break, because he is believable with his mistakes and mental mishaps. He, after all, is crazy. Stop looking at him through a sane lense and remember, he's not like us, he's a SERIAL KILLER!

be a serial killer is not like being a football player , you can fumble the ball or miss a reception , it's a mistake but it won't kill you.

for Dexter , those mistakes are really dangerous for him , after 4 years of following a code for not get caught , it feels pretty weird that he takes all those risks.

it's not mistakes for me , it's just shortcuts made by the scenarists and that's probably those shortcuts that made this show kind of laughable

I can't believe so many people on here don't like this season. This has been a big improvement from last season. Let's be honest. Deb has always been kinda crazy with her emotions towards guys. She clings to them way to quickly and then questions her relationships constantly. She used to cry every episode it seemsed. And not to mention the relationship she wishes she had with her dad. At first I was really weirded out by the whole idea but this is true to her character. Not sure how far they'll take it but I believe the shrink is being used to make her start focusing on Dexter for the eventual reveal. There are probably only gonna be 2 more seasons so that's only 25 episodes left. I always wondered how she would handle the news when she found out about dexter. Maybe this is a way to help her deal with it when it happens.

I wouldn't say she was ever normal on the show. Neither her nor Dexter or normal. He has his dark passenger and she has intimay issues with guys. Hey, I agree it's weird. I'm just saying I am able to see Deb have these feelings. How Dexter handles them will be another story altogether. What we an agree on is with 25 episodes left the writers have said we are now seeing the end unfold quikly. So every relationship that evolves over the short remaining episodes has a point and pushes the story to it's desired conclusion

I'm sorry but I don't describe this season as "horrible." I've been watching Dexter since season 1. Maybe we were all spoiled by the sheer awesomeness of seasons 1 and 4, and the general greatness of 2 and 3, and the very watchable season 5. But just because it isn't as good as seasons 1-4 doesn't make it horrible. I still love watching Dexter. It's still my favorite show on TV and is always a "can't-miss" for me. I look forward to the finale because I already anticipate a twist to set up a two season long arch that will lead to the series finale in 2013. I think Dexter at its worse is better than almost any other show at its best, save for the elite shows like "Mad Men," "Walking Dead," and "Breaking Bad" (Funny that those are all AMC shows...). Dexter is still fun, still throws curveballs at you every now and then, and is still led by the always impressive Michael C. Hall (Save for "Gamer"). I'm tired of the so-called experts ramming on this show just because you can predict a couple plot lines and aren't as entertained as you were in season 4, aka one of the best seasons of any show period.

Tell me everyone worked out Gellar was only a figment of his imagination all along? So fricking obvious! It's a bit of a shame that the writers ruin what could be a great season by all these little "lucky" little incidentals that save Dexter. Don't get me wrong, I don't want Dexter to get caught, (altho imagine the whole new story arc *that* would bring on!) but it is making things too hard to believe and frankly, laughable.

Shame writers didn't expand on the whole good/bad killer thing with Harry and Dex's brother..I feel this could have really put depth into this season. I feel that the episode where he stuck a pitchfork thru that guy was such a waste of an episode.

I really feel it's time for Deb to find out about Dex's alternate life..and please don't make her fall for her own brother!!! Surely this will kill the show!

Some things that bug me:

How does Dexter get away with spending so little time with Harrison?

Why is LaGuerta such a bitch and why isn't she dead yet?

How can Quinn get away with being such a slacker these last few episodes?

How is Dex gonna get away with i) his painting on the wall and ii) his voice possibly being on MM telephone network?

The TV series is generally better than the books but the three things that are different in the books that I prefer are:

1. Deb knows about Dex's dark passenger and continually makes him help her solve cases.

2. Astor and Cody have dark passengers of their own due to their father's abuse and they keep pushing Dex to help them refine their passengers.

3. Dokes is not dead, he just lost his hands/feet/tongue to a serial killer and still has it out for Dex, he stomps around using a little computer to swear at Dexter, really funny :)

Oh god, I really hope whoever was in charge of this season's main story gets executed, and someone competent is brought in. If the next season will be as bad as this one, I'll stop watching.

I must say, Price, I owe you an apology. I was ragging on you about 5 eps back because I thought the season would turn around and 1. Prove that Geller IS real and 2. Justify Dex's stupidity over the whole arc, but NOPE. So you were right, sir, my hat's off.

And here I thought French was a beautiful language! Sorry, no need to swear at me. As to your main gripe, when you watch this episode you'll know that the screengrab is from a dream sequence, so not necessarily a spoiler. If you don't like to know ANYTHING about a show before you've seen it, your safest best is to avoid this website entirely.
