Did Perfect Couples Deserve to Be Canceled For Paul Reiser?

NBC made a notable scheduling decision yesterday, clearing out one of its Thursday-night comedies to make room for some new blood. Perfect Couples, the romantic comedy starring Olivia Munn and five other young, attractive people, was ousted from its cushy 8:30pm slot to make way for one of the network's odd men out: The Paul Reiser Show.

Paul Reiser hasn't really been relevant to television audiences since the 1990s hit Mad About You. But apparently that was enough for NBC to go ahead and make a whole new series, as The Paul Reiser Show stars Reiser as Paul Reiser, an out-of-work television actor looking for something to do with his life.

NBC will begin airing the program on April 14, and is on-the-hook to air at least four episodes, according to Salon, with six total episodes in the hopper. But why did the network suddenly decide to give The Paul Reiser Show a shot now? The program will certainly fly under-the-radar of most casual television viewers without the big fall push usually given to new shows. Is NBC just putting it out there to get rid of it, or does it actually think The Paul Reiser Show will help see the Thursday-night comedy block through sweeps and finales?

Another point to debate: Did Perfect Couples deserve to get axed (technically, the show hasn't been officially canceled, but the writing is on the wall) in favor of The Paul Reiser Show? Horrible 10:30pm time slot aside, would Outsourced have been a better candidate to drop instead?

It's an odd move for a network to cram a show about a 53-year old unemployed dad between two heavily young-skewing shows like Community and The Office, and I don't think it does The Paul Reiser Show any favors.

What's your opinion of NBC's decision? Would you have canceled Perfect Couples to make room for Paul Reiser, or would Outsourced have been a better victim?

I'm really sad to see it go. I was looking forward to watching seasons to come, and i thought its subject matter was really relevant.

I thought Perfect Couples was a great show. It was fresh and funny and I thought it had great potential to grow and develop into a really solid show. It brought a unique kind of comedy to the table instead of trying to rip off what's already out there. I don't have any opinion about the Paul Reiser Show but I definitely think that Outsourced deserved the boot more than Perfect Couples did.

What is not funny about duct taping 40 oz beers onto your hands? This show rocked. Better than Happy Ending and I think it is pretty good.

I am sorry to see this show go--thought it was really funny this first season and was looking forward to the next. :( I loved how the guys intereacted together.

I didn't know so many people had such bad taste in TV shows. Perfect couples was probably the worst show on TV. It was not funny in the least. Paul Reiser had one funny movie...Beverly Hills Cop 2. He is extremely irrelevant. I think NBC felt bad for the guy.

I'm horribly disappointed with the decision to take Perfect Couples of the air. That show is hilarious! Outsourced should have been booted. Paul Reiser is ok, but I won't watch the show. For a while it seemed that the sitcom took a back seat to mind numbingly irrelevant "reality" tv and dramas; it was nice to see the sitcom make it's way back a la Modern Family, Cougar Town, Happy Endings, Traffic Light and even Breaking In. Sometimes you just need a laugh. Please bring back Perfect Couples, I love that show!

Perfect Couples shouldn't have been cancelled in the first place! It's a hilarious show and meshes well with my Thursday night line up of The Office, Community, 30 Rock, Parks & Rec, & Outsourced. I will not be watching the Paul Reiser show...and will find better things to do with my time. I would've rather seen Outsourced booted...but I enjoy that one as well.

i actually like both "perfect couples" and "the paul reiser show". i didn't realize until tonight that PC has been cancelled. the wedding seemed a perfect ending for a season. NBC should think hard and clear about continuing the production of Perfect Couple. I would definitely watch it. it was really hysterically funny at times and had a great cast. paul reiser yes was like curb but it had potential. not everyone has to be young on tv shows for them to be entertaining. betty white for example in "hot in cleveland". JMO.

perfect couples is one of my favorite comedies. why premiere a new show when everyone in the world is watching Idol, no wonder the ratings are low, its not that difficult nbc. thats why all the other thursday nbc comedies were reruns. and paul reiser? seriously? never.

Perfect Couples is so good and really funny. The new show with Paul Reiser looks to be another dud. Save Perfect Couples!

I'll admit that when I watched the first episode of Perfect Couples, I wasn't very impressed, in fact I was a little turned off by the show and decided Not to add it to my DVR. However I had Community scheduled and I got a glance at the opening of the second episode and was slightly intruiged. I began watching it. I ended up setting it on my DVR and the more I watched the funnier the show became. I think NBC has this idea that every show needs to hit the groud running and Perfect Couples had a slow start. Too bad they weren't given a chance to catch up because it was becomming one of my favorite shows for the Thursday night lineup.

Perfect Couples was funny, and the only reason Outsourced has higher ratings is bc it's on after 30 Rock. If they had put Perfect Couples on later, and cancelled Outsourced earlier like they should have, i think PC would still be around. I hear that the guy who plays Vance will be on a different show on NBC which is good, because he was the funniest one, however, paul reiser is annoying, mad about you was overrated, and i hope it gets cancelled and they at least air the last four episodes of perfect couples.

I'm a huge fan of Perfect Couples and Outsourced! I think both shows work great in the Thursday comedy (i swear the only real comedy block left!!!!) and any changes will for sure fail. My husband and I laughed at Perfect Couples every week (and Outsourced!). Why change a good combination of a good thing and put in a show that in my opinion will only (if it's lucky) go the 6 scheduled shows before it's dropped. Paul Reiser hasn't done anything in years...why try and pull a 'Curb' type show that no one will watch? I know we won't!!

I really liked Perfect Couples, and I thought it was getting funnier with every episode. I don't have anything against Paul Reiser, I just never really thought he was that funny, but "Mad about You" was more cued in to the generation before mine. I really do not care about the premise of the Reiser show, it sounds like a re-vamped "Joey".

I personally think most of you are crazy. Paul Reiser was/is incredibly funny and talented. I'm extremely excited about his long-awaited return to TV. While I like Perfect Couples, it IS pretty generic like some have said. Nothing new or even that fresh. I'm sure NBC is willing to give Paul a chance due to one of those little shows that made NBC popular in the 90's. You may remember it, "Mad About You." People were unsure about that show as well and it turned out to be gold that lasted 7 seasons. So give the guy a break. He's earned his stripes and respect. I don't blame NBC for a second and I give mad kudos to them for bringing Paul back. Now put the darn show on already, I'm getting too anxious! Btw, I liked the comment about Paul being from another generation. Classic stuff. You DO realize that "generation" still exists and doesn't go back very far, right? Not all TV needs to be for the 20 somethings, yet they seem to think the sun and all tv programming should revolve around them. The 20-somethings DO have something for their taste, it's called Jersey Shore and reality tv.

No way! Why should we have to watch this show now? Couldn't it be on a Monday night when nothing good is on? Must we be subjected to losing good shows for the sake of old friendships? Why must my choices for Monday's be Dancing with the Stars? Maybe NBC would be better putting this show on a Saturday when everyone is home and sitting by the TV waiting patiently to be entertained by fantastic writing and comedic timing? Thoughts?

perfect couples was great, it was the only reason my girlfriend tolerated the 3-hour comedy block on thurs. nights. Damn you Paul Reiser

Perfect Couples is a great show. This is another in a long line of mistakes made by the networks. And Outsource, not a fan.

my husband and i loved this show! it was refreshing and witty and actually written really well. we were always splitting sides while watching this show. this is a big mistake just like when they canceled studio 60. it seems like substance is being cut and reality crap is taking over and i'm tired of it! i work in television and i was so happy to watch this show and have a break from reality shows that have nothing to offer. DON'T CANCEL PERFECT COUPLES!!!

Interesting argument regarding the demographic of NBC's 8.30 slot. I always had the feeling that Perfect couples was an odd choice there. Thursday has 4 work place comedies + Community, which also has those elements, just with the college being the work place. From my point of view Perfect couples lacked identity and originality, so give Reiser a go! Can't be worse. ;)

My fiance and I LOVE this show! We look forward to it every Thursday night with the rest of the NBC Thurs. lineup - including The Office, Parks & Rec & Outsourced! This is a DUMB move, NBC....Paul Reiser was of a different generation, no one will watch his show

What?! That's idiotic - Perfect Couples had potential and they didn't even give it a chance. Once again NBC proves to make stupid decisions.

Perfect Couples wasn't perfect but I found it entertaining. I've never really been a Paul Reiser fan although I did watch Mad About You on and off for maybe the first 4-5 seasons. I don't think I watched any episodes from the final 2-3 seasons. I can't seem to watch the video clip so I really don't know anything about the new Paul Reiser Show. Outsourced is also not perfect but I find it humorous. If I had to decide between which show to drop I'd go with Outsourced, I suppose. How about dropping The Paul Reiser Show and not having to worry about Perfect Couples or Outsourced?

I loved mad about you but NBC hasn't really had much luck with good shows since the friends and will and grace went off the air.. I may give this new show a try but doesn't sound to promising.. Have to wait and see I guess.

I like Outsourced. Never watched Perfect Couples. Outsourced is fun and I like the characters. I've lost a job to outsourcing, but I don't hold that against them. Never gave Perfect Couples a chance. Probably won't for Reiser either. And I agree! Stop copying CURB! It can't be done!

I found Perfect Couples to be highly uninteresting. Not that Paul Reiser's show is going to be much better, but, that's NBC.

I tried to give "Perfect Couples" a chance, but it just didn't hold my attention. "Outsourced," on the other hand, has gotten better and better as the season has progressed. It's my second-favorite NBC comedy now, after "Community."

Ugh. Perfect Couples wasn't great, but it had a lot of funny moments and was getting much better. Frankly, a blank TV screen would be more entertaining than anything Reiser would do. Why did they drag him out of mothballs? And, yes, that awful Outsourced should never have even been on, much less left and PC cancelled. The suits are, as always, out of touch and out of their minds!!!!

Hey it's Olivia Munn. There's an audience in itself.

NBC caves under pressure. Reiser probably said that if they did not give him the spot that he would go to another network like CBS, ABC, or Fox. Leno pulled the same thing to get the Tonight Show back and Conan got the shaft because of it. Now NBC figured that someone had to go and the only logical one is the newest show. Sad that it did not get a real chance. Maybe Outsourced (which I am surprised is still on at all) could have been cancelled and Perfect Couples moved to its slot.

why the hell did they do that? I mean if they really must give the spot to this Paul Raiser, they could have just given PC another spot! Ever heard of moving things around?

out sourced is a mid season deal just like parks its good i love it but they play games to make it through the seasons of office and 30 rock parks i believe deserves a real season and so does outsourced but they like to keep playing to make sure the audience cares which is f'ed up because since the first season of parks its been on the blocks but its always made it past cut

I actually liked Perfect Couples, but i think it may be mostly because of the people on it rather than the actual show itself. but so many network, especially NBC, keep so much crap on tv, it's stupid when they (possibly) cancel a good show for one that sounds like one of the worst shows ever. i can't speak for Outsourced, people say it's alright but it never interested me at all so i've never seen it

Yeah I like Outsourced as well. Never really watched Perfect Couples. Although I think no show should step aside for Paul Reiser Show. It sounds awful.

"Perfect couple" was unwatchable. The same fate must have "mad Love" .
"Outsourced" is a great show and very clever

I hate to say it, but Outsourced is actually funny. It's a bit dorky, but it's never rude or disrespects either the American or the Indians. I hope this show stays on.

Perfect Couples started badly, yes, but it got better and better. It shouldn't have been canceled.

Nothing against Paul Reiser, and maybe his show will work out but why cancel a show that seemed to be doing well. You have to consider a lot of things including the main one, the network, NBC. I really don't watch much NBC mainly because they don't support their shows. But I do like 'Perfect Couples', 'Harry Law' and yes even 'Outsourced'. Don't get me wrong, it could use a polish but why clean it up if the network don't care. I seen and saw a lot of "could have been" hits if they just took control. But look at them, pretty much one of the worse basic cable networks out there. I am sure that there could have been a better spot for TPRS. And Tim, why wait till now to bring it out? What else do they have up their sleeves besides headaches and heartache for us?

"If anyone has ever watched Perfect Couples they would know that they don't really need a good reason to cancel Perfect Couples"

Couldn't have said it better myself krypton, the show is quite bad, not awful, but still, bad. This show was gonna get axed sooner or later, with or without "The Paul Reiser Show", which sounds like it's attempting to copy the success of "curb your enthusiasm", which is not even that successful.

If anyone has ever watched Perfect Couples they would know that they don't really need a good reason to cancel Perfect Couples. Olivia Munn, hot that you are, you alone could not make this show work. I couldn't even get through 5 minutes of it without falling asleep.

What will happen is they'll put Mr. Reiser on for a little time, then suddenly change their mind, want "Perfect Couples" back, and pay Reiser $30M to go to TBS...
Reply

They could put anything on in that time slot and it would still be better than Perfect Couples. Lets be honest; that show was terrible and needed to go.
