The new Time Lord and his companion Amy Pond talk to TV.com ahead of the series five premiere.
TV.com to Matt Smith: How hard was it to find your own "Doctor" style, especially given all the comparisons with previous actors in the role?
Matt Smith: It was a process of evolution but it was an enjoyable process because the part is so rich and varied. It has been a real pleasure to take on such an iconic role played by so many great actors.
TV.com to Matt Smith: What kind of pressure was on you to live up to David Tennant, who has been dubbed "the favourite Doctor"?
Matt Smith: I think it is only as intimidating as you allow it to be. Of course I was aware of the rich history of the Doctor and David's wonderful portrayal of the role but the part is so extraordinary that the privilege and joy of playing it myself far outweighs any expectations that might be placed on me.
TV.com to Karen Gillan: How did your previous experience on set in the episode "The Fires of Pomeii" help prepare you for the role of Amy Pond?
Karen Gillan: I had a really small part in "Fires of Pomeii", so it's completely different now I'm playing the companion. I didn't expect to land the part to be honest, but it's been an amazing experience. I think that nothing can really prepare you for the experience of playing the companion though.
TV.com to Matt Smith: Tell us about the best experience you've had on set while filming the new series?
Matt Smith: Every day filming with Karen Gillan! Although I did really enjoy going to Croatia to film an episode called "Vampires in Venice" because I love vampires and it was great to film abroad in such a beautiful place.
TV.com to Karen Gillan: Who has been your favourite actor or actress to film scenes with for this series and why?
Karen Gillan: Matt of course! Who else? He's so great to work with on set, we really get on and our personalities seem to work well together. He's a bit like an older brother to me!
TV.com to Matt Smith: Who is your favourite Doctor?
Matt Smith: Patrick Troughton.
TV.com to Karen Gillan: In other interviews, you have said you're in love with Amy and you want to be her -- what similarities are there between yourself and the character, and which of her character traits do you covet?
Karen Gillan: Amy is just so cool and effortless, which I don't necessarily think I am if I'm honest. She's also got a real inner confidence which I admire. But yes, I totally want to be her.
TV.com to Matt Smith: What is your favourite episode in the new series and why?
Matt Smith: I love episodes 12 and 13 of the series we have just filmed because they are the final eps. They are incredible and when we filmed them I think we had really grasped how to make the new show.
Doctor Who series five premieres in the UK on April 3 on BBC One and on April 17 on BBC America. Australian fans can stream the first episode at abc.net.au/iview from midnight April 16, ahead of its TV broadcast on Sunday April 18 on ABC1.
