Dollhouse Swept Out of Sweeps

Dollhouse: Did I fall asleep?
TV Gods: No, but you'll be taking a permanent dirt nap soon enough.

Fox is preparing for its all-important November sweeps party (a time of year where advertisers put ratings under a microscope and networks pull out all the stops) and Dollhouse isn't invited.

The network won't be airing Dollhouse in November, replacing the sci-fi drama from cult-hit-maker Joss Whedon with repeats of Bones and House on Friday nights. Fox will burn off the rest of Dollhouse's season by airing back-to-back episodes in December in the show's usual death time slot. Stating the obvious, this does not bode well for Dollhouse.

Fox previously said it wouldn't cancel Dollhouse before its 13-episode Season Two order, and they're holding up their end of the bargain so far. But beyond that baker's dozen is a big, shiny cancellation axe just waiting to be dropped. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles fans, feel free to scream in frustration right about... now.

Let's hope Joss is at least given enough time to wrap up his story. To tide you Whedonites over, check out this Firefly homage from a sneak peek at ABC's Castle.

FOX sucks big time. they picked the wrong show to cancel and now it's bitten them in the arse.

  • Isamu_36

As I don't live in the states I can't tell the reason so why is that seasons no longer last for more than 12 average episodes? Producers release a couple of episodes with good ratings and good stories and then they decide if they want to shoot a couple more and then another couple more to complete the 22-25 standard number.I think they are being disrespectful towards the general audience; It's a shame because in spite of the political and cultural contents on the shows, Northamerican series used to be the funniest and best brought-together on TV.

  • Stin414

Tru calling was a good show that never should have been cancelled. I'm not sad to see Dollhouse go, so why not bring Tru Calling Back!!!!!

  • acejase66

Add another vote for bringing back the Sarah Connor Chronicles.I'm a huge Joss fan and feel disappointed for him, particularly after what happened with Firefly, but, try as I may, I could never get into Dollhouse. On the other hand, nothing - and I mean nothing - got in my way of watching Season 2 of The SCC. The SCC was really going places.

  • mimisc2009

I think it was about time Dollhouse got cancelled - sorry. I'm a huge fan of the show and really liked the idea of the show but it started to go down at the end of season 1 and season 2's just painfull to watch.

Hmm, can't say I'm surprised, though it's too bad. I like Dollhouse well enough. It is obviously better than all teen dramas and reality programming. The problem with the show is not the actors, and it's not that the concept of the doll house isn't a cool one. The problems are 1) They shouldn't have done even a single "imprint of the week" episode without reference to an overall story arc, because nothing that happens to the protagonist matters, since she is just a doll. 2) I very much agree with the comment by noelveiga, which said that it's hard to connect with the characters, since the good guys (dolls) have no personalities of their own, and the bad guys are, you know, bad. Also, and this may just be a personal thing, but I've had trouble taking whats-his-butt (the FBI guy) seriously throughout the entire series. It's weird, b/c that actor was completely believably hard-core when he was on BSG. They should have showed him topless more often. . . I love, love, love Buffy, Angel, and Firefly, but I can't say I'm shocked that this particular Whedon project isn't likely to continue. You know what would be genious?? If someone would just bring back Firefly. Now that it's had time to really gather a following, (For example, I had never even heard of it until after it was long gone), it would do really well! I want to see Nathan Fillion as a REAL Space Cowboy once again!moreless

Dollhouse is a pretty good show. It airs at a decent time here in Australia thankfully and i hope it wont get axed

  • gudendk

yeah i agree with you netgoddess, bring back tscc... please :)

  • netgoddess

Dollhouse is pretty decent, but if they do kill it I'd really like some more Sarah Connor Chronicles. And Eliza was better in Tru Calling

  • Darkcanuck65

I think what's being explored thematically in the show is too off putting for the main stream network audience. I really wish that if it gets cancelled that either F/X or SYFY picks it up, it would thrive on one of those. Galactica & Damages would never survive on a broadcast network. I think Dollhouse has the wrong home.

  • NightingaleDaze

I'm sorry but I didn't even know it came on Fridays. EVERY Friday my family goes out to eat and maybe does a quick shopping trip. The TV never comes on, we might go watch a movie. We record Dollhouse and watch them later. We record everything. I don't think anything in the house gets watched when it's actually on. I love Josh Whedon and everything he's done. My parents like this show and have been waiting for me to get back from a 3 month trip seeing my husband before he got deployed before we start watching them again. I still haven't finished the first season, but I lovin' it. Putting a show on Friday night that young people especially, like is death to the show. I even hear Smallville is losing an audience being on Friday nights. So sad. I say just make them for DVD and people will watch.moreless

  • Alyssatao30

stupid, stupid, fox..LOL - WHY can't the good and different shows just stick!?!?! i give up anything that is showing on fridays....except flashpoint, with a dash of canada, it rocks!

  • neomichel

It was obvious it would not get renewed after couple episodes!

  • noelveiga

The problem is the show itself, not the actors. It is just a bad idea. The core concept involves a group of people doing very nasty things to another group of people. So you'd naturally identify with the victims there, i.e. the dolls. Only you can't, because the dolls turn out to be these blank slates that are literally nobody, so there is no character there to identify with. When one of the dolls is allowed to be him or herself, like Sierra did last ep, it is a weird moment that feels totally unsatisfying. Here's this character you don't know about acting with a personality that feels just as fake and overacted as the ones it's supposedly implanted with. So you go right back to identifying with the dollhouse staff... and those guys are torturers and not very nice at all, so who cares about them. And then you stop watching. It's ok, it's an interesting premise on paper, but Whedon and Fox should have realized the concept is flawed and tweaked it or go for something else. As it is, I'm glad it gets to wrap, which I'm guessing will be kind of cool just because Whedon can do finales like the best of them, but I'm not sad to see it go.moreless

  • Rebel-Man

The reason its doing bad is not because of where it is, its because of the show itself. Dushku is not a lead actress. At all. Shows on CBS and even a new show on USA network did better than Dollhouse but oh my it in a death slot? Must not be too deathy if other networks can get shows to work on Friday. X files of all things Fox did well on Friday! It's because Whedon bombed on this show. He is not perfect. He has done well in the past but missed the mark royally on this one. Confusing, can't love the character Echo because she is different each episode. Doesnt' work. Fox gave it a chance, it bombed lower. It's time for it to vanish.

Jooj: I think everyone knows that the good people at FOX are missing a chromosome, but I am surprised that anyone likes season two (so far) over season one. The Alpha episodes and the unaired episodes of season one were by far the best the show has offered. In season two it seems like they have forgotten the rules they established in season one. The Dolls aren't very Doll-ish anymore, carrying on full conversations.

  • Jooj

Fox are idiots. If dollhouse had begun the way it's going now it would have had a following. I'm not sure about the people who think there was anything good about season 1, I thought it was just terrible. Charlies Angel / Fantasy Island cheesiness without the excuse of being made in the 70s/80s. The new season has it all, drama, irony, stuff that really makes you think, intriguing stuff. When are fox going to learn their lesson, Weadon knows his stuff, and stuff your formulaic approaches to prime time programming.

  • Monkey2Banana

o well i stopped watchin it anyway

  • dontdoubtitfkrs

Dollhouse started weak, got stronger. Season two started weak... And weak it is. I thought it would get better or at least stay level but it just gets worse. It's like season two is a totally different show. Hopefully it will end strong, if it doesn't... Bummer and um, rest in peace.

  • kok_warlock

This show from the beginning had a lot of promise, and not a lot of content, it didn't help that it relied on a talentless main actress, we all kept waiting to get better, because it was a "Joss Whedon's show", but it didn't, hopefully his next show will be better, because this one was pretty damn bad.

  • bamiee

honestly, the concept of the show is very intriguing, but the main actor is lacking in pull off such a complicated role. i think the reason buffy was so successful was because sarah michelle gellar pulled it off and made it believable. Eliza Dusku, yes is getting better, but it was a rough start. first season sort of crashed and burned with the acting being kinda terrible along with the lack of a big story arc to keep the viewers hooked. episodic stories are great and fine but there has to be something that the viewers want the show to get back to and explore (which is what they are doing in season 2 much better). there wasn't enough of that in the beginning. instead, echo was trying to be like an alias character without all the exciting espionage (not to mention the time they made her sing! that was just mean dude!). the show has brought a lot of names to entice viewers but for the wrong network. all of these actors are well known scifi actors. nobody even recognizes them in the fox world.moreless

  • Starprincess13

Repeats of Bones and House earn more viewers than brand new episodes of Dollhouse. That's the basis for Fox's decision about November sweeps.

  • Rebel-Man

Skyvolt: No those characters in their inception were in no movies. Where did you get that? Sarah Michele Gellar and pretty much all of them on Buffy were unknown characters at that time. All the stars on Angel were unknowns as well. They didn't start in movies and get "popularity" until a little bit later. Despite that, I saw te ratings and they were like 8 million viewers or more in their earlier years. And FOX could alway do waht they always do, air movies or something or encore presentations of House and Bones which oddly seem to do better in repeats on Friday over new episodes of Dollhouse. This dollhouse fanaticism seems to lapse common sense when it comes to how well its doing.

  • salsolaa

    Loooooooooooooooooooooooool
we want terminator the sarah connor chronicles back
we want it , it is the best show ever from Fox. Bring it back for us.

  • skyvolt2000

In defense of Buffy & Angel-they didn't air in death time slots like Dollhouse. They also aired on a network that was growing and tended to look beyond ratings.
Also Buffy had cast members appearing in movies and could promote the show. How many of these guys are doing stuff outside of Dollhouse?
Fox would be doing a diservice axing the show. What else are they going to air?

  • Sanzee360

I said this was going to happen after the pilot aired (not the un-aired pilot but the first episode). This show has a great concept but poor execution. But instead, all the whedonites mocked me. Now I know how Jesus felt.

  • Rebel-Man

DVR numbers only bring in an extra million. That's not a huge jump. Sales have been abmismal at best.

  • WillRegan

Kill dollhouse, bring back Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles! LETS PLAY!

  • ocean58

I love Dollhouse. Fox decision is very disappointing. Hope thew will think it over again.

  • jrgoddess2004

After this Friday's episode how can they think of canceling dollhouse belonging was probably the best episode of the season hands down. Anyone not watching the show just has to see this episode and it will have you hooked.

  • 123tv

Even if Dollhouse is not aired in sweeps season that doesn't mean that it’s gone. I think Whedon has something up his sleeve for this show. And it has a lot to do with the profitability of its DVD sales and DVR numbers. Whedon somehow got this show another season and I don’t think it was the promise of higher weekly viewer numbers but has more to do with the shows long term earnings. If you can say one thing about Whedon’s work it’s that it has legs and I think FOX is banking on that fact.

  • Rebel-Man

Some of yall are saying the series should be allowed to grow. Grow? It's not growing, its shrinking in viewership. Last night's episode was the lowest yet! Buffy and Angel grew in season two on a lower rated network. This is not. Vampire Diaries gets higher ratings and even Smallville. Believe me it's not the night. Ghost Whisperer and Medium get like 8 million a night. Dollhouse can barely keep 2 million. It's the show. Even Whedon fans are 50/50 on it.

  • MisfitChicks

Fox often cancels decent shows. You would think they'd learn about the Friday night slots and change the standards just for that day. Common sense seems to be lacking in network television. Dollhouse is a very good show. It's getting better with every episode. Too bad we won't see how great it could be.

  • msalmank

So... i just watched episode 4 of Dollhouse and i am literally in love with the show. Honestly, the first three episodes of this season were good in my opinion but not of the caliber expected - after especially watching Epitah One... But Episode 4 was simply AWESOME!Dollhouse is the best telivision series at the moment - well one of the best ;) - but Fox needs to give it some breathing space to grow into what its meant to be. True i didn't like the first 3 episodes much from this season, but each brought on a significant point/impact to the main storyline... This is Whedon people... just look at Buffy! Can anyone seriously compare the last 3 seasons with the first ones?If Fox has some sense they'll let Whedon carry on with the project and let the series develop into the most powerful one on telivision... If Whedon has some sense though, he'll learn to throw the fox a ball of meat from time to time too so that it doesn't loose interest too soon... :)moreless

Fox = FailI loved The Sarah Connor Chronicles and I was pissed when I found out it was cancelled. I like Dollhouse and it's disappointing that the ratings are bad and will most likely get cancelled after this season. First TSCC, now this! Why can't the rest of the US like intelligent shows?
