Dr. Phil scraps show on Britney Spears

US television personality and psychologist Dr. Phil McGraw Monday scrapped plans to air a show about Britney Spears after he was criticized for a visit to the troubled pop star in hospital on the weekend.

McGraw went to see Spears at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles where the 26-year-old was admitted last week in a fit of hysterics over the handover of her two young sons to her ex-husband Kevin Federline.

McGraw, who counsels people on his popular TV program The Dr. Phil Show, has been accused of breaching Spears' privacy by other counselors on various media after he visited the pop star Saturday morning just before she was released.

In an interview on the CBS network's The Early Show on Monday, McGraw said he went to see Spears "at the request of her family." He said Spears' mother, sister, and brother "were very frustrated that she apparently wasn't going to be held (in hospital) for a longer period of time."

McGraw said he had planned to tape a show Monday focused not on the tabloid side of Britney's problems, but on other issues surrounding this case.

"Clearly, it is not just Britney's family struggling to find a way to protect adult children who cannot be ordered or compelled to seek help," he said.

"Because the Spears situation is too intense at this time, and out of consideration to the family, I have made the decision not to move forward with the taping," said McGraw.

He also said in a statement on his Web site that details of his visit "remain private."

Spears, who spent much of 2007 in and out of alcohol- and drug-rehabilitation programs and battling legal problems, was hospitalized last week when she became hysterical after representatives of her ex-husband tried to pick up their sons from a weekend visit.

The pop singer was taken from her home on a stretcher, hospitalized for nearly two days under mental evaluation, and finally released early Saturday morning.

While she was in the hospital Friday, a Los Angeles family court suspended her visitation rights to her sons Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1.

Spears lost primary custody of the boys to Federline after her life spun out of control following their divorce in November 2006, her stints in rehab, and reports of drinking and drug use. She is currently undergoing court-ordered random drug and alcohol tests and parenting lessons.

Spears became a teen pop phenomenon nine years ago. She made her musical comeback in October with a new single, "Gimme More," and an album, "Blackout," that played strongly on radio and digital download charts and briefly hit number 2 on the US pop album charts.

Dr.Phil thinks she needs help--well duhhhh--she was in the hospital getting help and he interfered in it and she left. If he has no license to practice, does no private counseling then why did he go there to the hospital but to get her on the show. How heartless is that? Well I think Dr.Phil needs help--and I am definitely of the opinion that he is a bully.

I feel badly for Britney and her family but, at the same time, I hope her problems might bring to light the extreme abuses of out-of-control social workers and family courts. Throughout this entire sequence of events, everyone seems to be sure that, in the long run, Britney will get back on her feet and she'll get her kids back. In reality, that's a pipe-dream, at least for people like us. Three years ago, our family was in crisis. My dear mother had broken her hip and unexpectedly died from a pain-patch overdose. She had dementia and I'd taken care of her for over 20 years. My daughter, trying to get past a failed 10 year marriage, was into drugs and being evicted. I asked social services for help. They took the children. I wanted to keep them until my daughter could get well. They led me on, all the time seeking full custody behind our backs. We were never offered an attorney and we were kept in the dark about court proceedings. I wrote letter after letter and made countless phone calls. I was ignored. Before I knew it, they were gone. I haven't laid eyes on my two darling grandchildren for two years. My daughter became suicidal when they destroyed our lives but she's finally getting better. What I don't understand is how it could possibly be good for the children to rip them away from everyone they love. I was praised for the way I cared for my mother. Now, for reasons unknown to me, I am a bad person that could probably be arrested if I saw my own family. I've never once been sent any paperwork that says this but I have tried to get attorneys to get me visitation and they say it's a waste of time. What does it say about me in the court records that would make them say this? Nobody will tell me. I swear to you that I am a good grandmother and what they have done to us is a crime. I wish Britney well. She has better chances because it's all public. What happened to us is kept secret so as not to expose their lies.
