Elementary Has Found Sherlock's Father and He Looks a Lot Like John Noble

Sleepy Hollow's loss is Elementary's gain! The always great John Noble has joined the CBS drama as a series regular for Season 4, the network announced Wednesday. Noble will take on the role of Sherlock's (Jonny Lee Miller) estranged father.

The character was referenced in the past as being instrumental in Sherlock’s first stint in rehab. He's also the person responsible for Sherlock being paired with Joan (Lucy Liu) as his sober companion during the series' first season. Now living in New York City, he will help Sherlock deal with the aftermath of his recent relapse.

What do you think of this casting? Anything is better than the bull-honky they handed to him in Season 2 of Sleepy Hollow, right? Also, here's the requisite "FRINGE RULES!"

Elementary's fourth season will air Thursdays at 10pm on CBS this fall.

If you consider that John Noble started his actual acting career at the age of 40 ( he's now 67) whereas Jonny Lee Miller (42) has been acting more or less professionally since he was 10 years old this is strictly speaking not correct.

I'd watch John Noble just staring into the camera for an hour. That's better than a lot of current TV.

I think it's an interesting choice. And the role is even close to the one he played in Lord of the Rings. A father who prefers his elder son, emotionally abusing the younger but in the end recognising that he loves him.
I am interested how the authors will deal with that. From a psychological point of view, Sherlock has to confront his father with what he did to him. He has to tell him that what he did was a crime and that he is responsible. Sherlock is not the one who is "wrong". But that is one of themost difficult things to do.

I don't watch Elementary because I an't stand what they've done to the famous detective and doctor duo. But if John Nobel is on board I may have to give season three a second chance.

It was implied. Sherlock being exposed to triggers but not giving in to them until Alfredo was safe. He picked up the container from the ground and Joan said it had been three days and wanted to know if he wanted to 'talk. Joan said his father somehow 'found out' and was coming.

And it didn't quite make a lot of sense how and why it happened, but well, they have been teasing us with the relapse for a while now, so let's deal with it and get over it as soon as possible.

John Noble is a great actor but I didn't really see him as being able to create the kind of character that can be believable as Sherlock's father. Though I will have no problem admitting I'm wrong when he makes his first appearance.

I think John Noble is up to the task. Hopefully it is a role that he can finally get some recognition for. I think he is quite capable of playing an aloof father who can run corporations but not know how to talk to his sons. Too bad Mycroft is hiding out, it would be interesting to see the family dynamic if all of them could get together.

I had planned on skipping season 4 of Elementary, however now I am anxious to see it! I got tired of it being the Joan Watson show, and while I fear that him using again will make that even worse, it will be worth it to see John Noble again, assuming Joan is not bossing him around all the time as well!

love his characters in fringe and sleepy hollow. he plays odd balls well so think this is a perfect casting.

i think as sleepy hollow werent renewing his character that led to a certain end for him. if he was renewed the writing could have been better.

How John Noble never was even nominated for his .... cannot find the right word..... exuberant acting skills on Fringe? I know, nobody can´t answer that.

Dance was my pick as well.

Tho I am sure Noble will crush it.

Besides perhaps this is for the best (for Mr. Dance not us) since the main reason we picture him is because we are imagining Tywin Lannister as Shecklock's father (And let's be honest here that's a damn good fit)

I'll be honest I do not know all of Dance's Filmography but. I will agree Twin is his only intimidating.

But even you ave to admit Tywin is his most recognizable of the past few years especially with the U.S. crowd.

P.S. I still say next time the master shows up/regenerates in doctor who it needs to be Dance

watson in general is does not have a strong sway on this show which is not dissimilar to any recent sherlock incarnation and I in that regard fail to see how the characters gender matters as long as the relationship stays platonic.

I find the procudral element of shows potentially more gratifying than a serialized arc in that you have to be a damn good writer to keep me interested in an ongoing plot. and IMO the silver screen in incredibly lacking in good writers. I can count on one hand the number of shows at any one time that I would consider high quality and I'm most certainly at a point where anything other than high quality is a waste of my time.

it blows both out of the water. buffy was cute fun when I was a young teen with nothing better to do (as in was actually indoors) and lost was utter bullcrap shortly after the word go. if lost were to air now I would not give it the time of day.

I hold all shows up to the bar that is what I consider the greatest shows and elementary has measured up in spades.

Joss Whedon could write an Elementary blindfolded and it would better than every episode preceding it

What kind of absolute moron thinks Elementary is up there with Buffy & LOST - next you'll be telling me it is better than The Sopranos you imbecile

You can be a fan of the show but it is no way in hell up there as a 'best show'

In my opinion there was nothing wrong with Noble's performance as Henry Parrish . People seem to forget that Noble's performance in Season 1 was a key element in making Sleepy Hollow popular, and the reveal that Henry was Ichabod and Katrina's son was so well done that the first two Sleepy Hollow episodes were guaranteed hits. The main problem Sleepy Hollow's second season had was Katrina, the all-powerful witch who was absolutely useless, and having Henry kill off the Big Bad mid-season. The writers wanted such a shocking cliffhanger that they completely forgot to figure out what they were going to do with Henry. Eventually they decided that, rather than having Henry redeem himself, they were going to keep him evil for no discernable reason, make Katrina evil, and kill them both. They went the easy route instead of exploring the conflict of a masterless Horseman, and that's a shame. John was like Colin Baker, the 6th Doctor- given terrible scripts but his acting made each episode at least WATCHABLE! (The worst episodes didn't have John in them and focused on Katrina or Hawley, the romantic interest no one wanted)
